Funny this should come up, today I found a photograph I shot of the last checkered flag thrown at Riverside. It still brings a tear to the ol' eyes'<g>. Everybody raced at Riverside and wanted to win there. Think of a major touring series and, at one time or another, they stopped at Riverside. Can Am, Trans Am, IMSA, CART, USAC,SCORE, The SCCA National Championships, NASCAR and even Formula One all ran at the track. Rarely in motor racing has there been a track where so many drivers from many different diciplines raced and could be compared. It was situated in the desert, south of Los Angeles and could be just the hottest, nastiest place on earth. You raced the track as much as you did your competition. The annual Nascar race in the early part of the year was always a welcome stop for the teams from the colder, eastern states, even if they did have to put up with Dan Gurney winning most of their races out here.<g> It has remained popular, even now some 12 years after it was closed, for a good number of reasons. It was, for many years, the only permanent road course in Southern California. Many west coast racing teams used RIR for testing and the drivers knew it well. It was always a big deal when the east coast guys, like Penske would show up to run against the west coast hot shoes like Gurney and Hill and Shelby. Road racing was very popular in Southern Cal in those days, it attracted quite a few celebrities and the local, as well as national, media gave it a lot of play. In short, Riverside became part of the "Car Culture" of the 50's and 60's. As such, it also became a victim of the fuel crisis and the land speculation boom of the 70's and 80's. Automobiles were considered evil and the land became more valuable to use as home to another crappy strip mall and a few graffitti covered apartment buildings. It's difficult to find information on Riverside on the net but have some old programs and Raceway Magazines from RIR. I'll take a look and see if there are any articles concerning the history of the circuit. I do know that the California Sports Car Club was very involved in the creation of the circuit and could give you any information you might need. http://www.calclub.com/ Is it worth buying? I thought so...but then I used to spend at least two weekends a month at the track and knew every bump and crack in the road. Unfortunately, Papy has had to give us the worst configuration of all that were available at Riverside. The short chute between T6 and T8 was only used for those big lumbering taxi cabs, everyone else, ie, cars that could actually corner, used either the full GP Course or the more popular, Short Course, turning right at T6, down the hill and then over the rise and the left into T7, the right at 7A which exited onto the main straight and lead you into T9. I can still visualize a perfect lap around the place, I just wish I could drive it! http://www.silhouet.com/motorsport/tracks/riversid.html -- don "Getting hit by a meteorite is an accident... everything else is driver-error." Dan Gurney and Parnelli Jones raced Trans Am Mustangs there. The course is really just a Large rectangle with a series of esses on the front side, a fairly technical turn at the top then a short run to the back straight which is looooong and fast. Mid Ohio is probably a better "pure racecourse" > 2. Where can I find out more information about it? > 3. Try Ebay and pick it up for approx $9 to $19 dollars US funds. > > BTW I already have N3 so I don't think the acceleration pack would be money > well spent and there are no Cheerios offers here either! Once again sell your N3 at Ebay and pick up the Acceleration pak. The updated Portland Int. Raceway is perhaps Papys finest road course creation.(in the truck pak) > > Cheers > > Phil > -- > http://www.youpies.co.uk

From what I've read here, Riverside seems to be the Holy Grail of circuits for the North Americans amongst us. Since I'm from England I have no idea what all the fuss is about and have a couple of questions. 1. What makes Riverside such a great circuit? 2. Where can I find out more information about it? 3. Finally, is it worth buying NL just to use the circuit in GPL, especially seeing as I'll have to import it from the States as Sierra have never released it in England? BTW I already have N3 so I don't think the acceleration pack would be money well spent and there are no Cheerios offers here either! Cheers Phil -- http://www.youpies.co.uk

I can still see Richard Petty blasting the esses like a straightaway, nothing but fourth gear left in his 74 Charger, front end a mass of duct tape from the base of the windshield to the center of the hood. Made up four of the ten laps he was down before the transmission crapped out... Then there's the image of him nearly 20 years later running the bulldozer across the track at the start/finish line, initiating the demolition of a great track. Progress sucks sometimes... >It was situated in the desert, south of Los Angeles and could be just the >hottest, nastiest place on earth. Unless you were up in Boron, between Barstow and Mojave... <g> Great post, Don. I'm feeling a little wistful now... Regards, Brett C. Cammack That's Racing! Motorsports Pompano Beach, FL

Hey, Marc Cool site. My only disappointment was that the Terraserver links to the RIR photos don't work because Teraserver's server has apparently been relocated? Bob
