GPL is best, so are the Beatles...

Tired of 'GPL is best' threads, with a Beatles tangent

Tim O complained that endless 'GPL is best' threads were like a song stuck on repeat and hoped NASCAR 4 or GP3 would challenge it. Others debated whether GP3's modern cars could compete with GPL's sliding 1967 machines, but the thread mostly drifted into arguments about the Beatles, the Grateful Dead and other bands, plus assorted banter.

I know GPL is great, but constantly seeing the "GPL is Best!" threads re-hashed is like being caught in an endless loop of Back In The USSR. It's fun for a while, but now it's old and tired. God, I hope N4 or GP3 can give GPL a hard enough punch in the belly to make it go away for at least a couple of months. =8^/ Tim

It's not old to me. I waited until it was in the bargain bin and bought it (along with LWFF). Just an phenomonal game. I think that GP3 could essentially wipe GPL out of the newsgroup late this summer. The game will then be two years old.

There is a good chance that GP3 will also be superior in the majority of aspects. But since GPL was so ahead of it's time, it will be kept in many people's heart as if it's something special, unique. I don't expect to be sliding through corners with 4 wheel drift in GP3, which is a large part of the charm of GPL. Since the cars handle so differently, straight up comparisons aren't really in order. For you flight sim fans, it'd be like comparing Red Baron 3D to European Air War. Both are great sims, but the subject matter is strikingly different. I really do hope that GP3 is a marvelous sim, and this isn't just some blind GPL loyalty. But I don't expect GP3 to wipe GPL off the board regardless of how great it might prove to be.

Very good points. I just hope that GP3 will give me an impression of driving a hi-tech formula-1 car, something i think F1 2000 have some problems of doing. GPL really make me feel that i'm strapped into a rocket going way to fast for my own good. > For you flight sim fans, it'd be like comparing Red Baron 3D to European Air > War. No, but I hope every time when a new sim is released that it will show GPL where my shelf is, but with no internet-play and FF i fear that GP3 might not be the one. I'd love to be proven wrong, since the rest of it looks very promising. -- Olav K. Malmin remove spam when replying

The difference is that GPL intends to be a historical racing sim. GP3 is trying to be contemporary, but will fail in that respect because OTB it'll use 1998 data. GP3 won't, simply because of the completely different physics between them and the eras modelled. Both are great sims, but the subject matter is strikingly different. Ah... but you will be sliding through corners with 4 wheel drift. But the margin for error is much tighter. The speed is higher and the car goes away more quickly. He did pretty good with the physics of GP2 and there's no way the graphical perpective of GP3 could be half as bad as GPL. If he's Geoff, I think we'll see a terrific sense of acceleration and speed, and hopefully, bumps and twitchyness. > I really do hope that GP3 is a marvelous sim, and this isn't just someblind > GPL loyalty. It will be contemporary in the fact that it models a 'modern' formula 1 car, I concede that, but it'll still be out of date: Car performance data will be old, liveries will be old, etc. Perhaps most importantly will it include the latest circuits? OK, will it include Indy? I am going to be spending a lot of time with the demo, when it comes out, comparing it to F12k and old crock MGPRS2. I'm sceptical: Geoff Crammond is'nt God, and GP3 is likely to lack a number of features. It had better be damn good before I spend hard-earned cash on it.

Actually, I think the quote was more on the lines of an off-the-cuff "We're bigger than Jesus." I'm too lazy to look it up right now, so I offer it provisionally. But I remember it in part because a more-or-less funny book came out in the mid-to-late 70's which was a "what-if-the-Beatles-reunited" kind of thing, and in it, it turns out that what John *actually* meant when he said "we're bigger" was that they were *taller* than Jesus. Ha ha. Anyhow, I'm sorry to say that in my area of the USA (the south), good ol' boys and their lil' wimmin promptly organized Beatle-Burning parties (well, Beatle *record* burning parties). Evidently, that whole experience really shook Lennon. Lots of rabid hate-mail and so forth . . . --DK "m.seery" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:BPiO4.1402$[email hidden]...

Actually, none of us have been playing GPL since the end of 1998. The takeover of the newsgroup, WInVroc, etc., was all a big hoax (initiated by Y2K Rick--good job Rick!), done simply to get your goat. Ha! HA!, I say! We really had you going there, David Gee. Ummm....GP3 will STILL be representative of contemporary F1, in comparison to GPL, of course. Changes to the formula between 1998 and 2000 are miniscule. Changes to the drivers equally so. I may be dating myself but John Lennon stated that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus in response to a question posed by a reporter who asked him to account for their huge following. And considering the number of their fans at the time this was correct as they transcended beyond the christian world. But unfortunately, the religious right took it out of context and declared them persona non grata and the album smashing and bon fires started! Lennon was left at a total loss for what followed as he had in no way intended to imply the Beatles where more important than Christ or Christianity. Hey! a chance to drive in Michael Scumacher's 2000 season underwear! Seriously, though, the developers should still do their utmost to get things spot -on before release. And GP3's suspected lack of multiplayer, and crap replays may not be fixed by a third party mod. As I've said, I shall wait and see.

What I find useful with replays is the fact that you can use them to analyse your driving, and, if you make a mistake, or crash, you can find out what you did wrong, and avoid doing it in future. I wasn't suggesting watching a whole race, but for example, analysing various lines through a corner can be done better with a replay than with any telemetry. The fact remains, as you say, many *do* want a replay facility that can allow many cameras, and plenty of runtime. It's not as if we're 'pushing the envelope' here, it can, and has been done. There is no excuse for not having the facility to record a race if you want to.
