Hello everyone...I am planning on getting a gaming system geared towards
GPL. Top of the line hardware will be in that tower. Is a Voodoo card the
best for GPL (IYO)? The V5 should be out soon. Is there anything else worth
taking a look at. Man upgrading is hard work :o)
Dave C.
For GPL the V5 6000 AGP or the V5 5500 AGP will be the best card to have.
The V5 5500 AGP will be out at the end of may in the US and costs $299. Any
non-3dfx card will be stuck with using the OpenGL beta driver, and I think
(although I'm not completely sure) that you still have to turn down the
mirror refresh rate with OpenGL in GPL to avoid significant slowdown (maybe
a GeForce or TNT2 owner could clarify if this is still the case).
I'll be getting a V5 5500 AGP most likely, even though the GeForce 2 GTS
looks to be significantly better.
Simon.
Has ANYONE tested GPL with the new V5's? Just because it says 3dfx on
the box I am not to comfy recomending a board that may or MAY NOT work
with GPL. I THINK it should, but I don't really know.
If you have to go out today and get a card, then the V3 is perfect for
GPL 1.2 If you can wait a few more weeks til we here the exact
details, then that's what I would advise. The V5 MAY be a great GPL
card, but I haven't heard anyone testing it yet. I will also mention,
that GPL is very CPU dependant. The world's latest and greatest vid
card will not overcome a poor cpu choice.
IN NO WAY SHOULD YOU EVEN CONSIDER A NVIDIA PRODUCT IF GPL IS YOUR
MAIN GAMING FIX. Nvidia CAN be made to work, Nvidia CAN produce great
framerates... Nvidia cards do the Quake3 better than anybody, but it
just doesn't make sense to focus on one product (GPL) and then buy
something you have to Banjo together to get it to work with product.

Thats the
theory anyway ;)
I plan on getting a GeForce 2 GTS, and using my V2 12mb in SLI for games like
GPL that are best with Glide.
