I want to connect to the server in the LAN, I can see the IPX node,
but the connection always times out?
Who knows how to solve this problem?
Rene
Sounds like you might need to fix the Frame Type on both machines. Goto
the Control Panel and choose Network. Now scroll down to the "IPX ->
Ethernet card" lines and .. (ok I have NT at work) just check for a
list with the word "Frame Type" in it and choose "802.2" for both
sides. You could also choose "802.3" for both sides but just make sure
both machines have the same setting.
Hope that helps :-)
Jason.

My YouBeTheBoss server has 2 ethernet cards. 1 to the net and 1 to my LAN.
Both cards have TCP/IP and I can connect fine via the LAN.
What I did was... I hosted the normal way and selected both TCP addresses to
receive connections. Then after that I just made sure the server.ini file had
"allow connections = 1" for both those TCP addresses. Works slick and I don't
have to install IPX :-)

Both comps were on the net of course

I run a server via VROC and connect via TCIP over my LAN, IPX over the LAN
caused discoes for me. In the host screens make sure skip multiplayer screen is
unchecked and you can select both the Net IP and LAN IP to host over in the
multiplayer screen.
I wouldn't have thought a hub made any difference.
Cheers

The hub is only used to connect computers unless its smart like a Cisco ;-) In
order to connect directly to the GPL host on a LAN you would need 2 ethernet cards
in the host machine connected to different hubs. One hub for the internet. One hub
for your LAN.
Internet
|--------HUB-----------
| |(200.1.1.1) (200.1.1.2) <- Ethernet card #1
GPLHOST PC
(172.16.0.1) (172.16.0.2) <- Ethernet card #2
| |--------HUB (LAN)-----
My setup is show above. In order for your PC to connect to the GPLHOST using the
LAN, both the GPLHOST and PC need 2 ethernet cards (you said both were connected to
the net so I assume that meant a direct connection).
You might have the following setup, which would work too but to connect via LAN
only.
Internet
| Firewall
|--------HUB-----
|(200.1.1.1)
GPLHOST PC
(172.16.0.1) (172.16.0.2)
| |--------HUB (LAN)-----
Sounds like you had a network issue Martyn.

1. IPX was not installed on both machines or
2. They were using the wrong packet type or
3. GPL was not setup to accept IPX connections.
The main benefit of using IPX would be saving a connection for you in a full race. Warp
really isn't an issue using 3/84 settings on a LAN.

and possibly this weekend i'll be able to try again
Thanx Jason

(N3, GPL) > http://members.home.net/stuff.mondsj/csp - Car Sim Project > (Please remove 'no extra spork' when replying)I've had the following setup working fine at home since January...
Internet (SDSL modem - 768Kbps up/down)
|
| Client machine Host machine Laptop
| | |
| +-------+--------+ | +--------| 100Mbps Switch |--------+
+----------------+
Host machine has 2 ethernet cards, the client desktop and client laptop each
have one ethernet card. I set up Microsoft ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)
using TCP/IP. Only problem I have is that my ISP masks the IP address of my
SDSL modem so direct IP races aren't possible until I can figure that one out.
It does make for a very secure connection when your ISP masks your IP address.
However I've been hosting N3 league races via WON using the raceserver.net
server software so that my host is a dedicated server. I then start the race
from my client using the client machine and can join the race from my client
either via Internet or direct TCP/IP over LAN. Of course the direct TCP/IP LAN
connect is faster from client to host than going out to my ISP and back... :-)
I plan to expand this LAN by one more desktop machine and possibly another
laptop over the next year. With 2 adults (myself and my wife), 2 teen-age
step-daughters, 9 yr. old step-daughter, 2 yr. old boy, 9 month old girl and
one on the way in December, demand for computer and online time is premium! I
have my "race" nights where I take over the whole network to host league racing
3 times a week, but otherwise it's a free-for-all online.
Don't know about GPL as haven't been online with it since before I set this
network up. I assume I would have to open up ports because of MS ICS, but
haven't had the need yet.
Your mileage may vary...
