First-corner crashes and disconnects in VROC GPL races

A new online racer complained about being punted at the first corner of VROC open races and about drivers who disconnected after crashing. Others agreed and urged staying in races, blamed lag for some incidents, and server host Eldred noted that less popular tracks and longer races drew few players. A joke proposal for electric-shock penalties followed.

Whilst I have owned and loved GPL for over a year now, I only recently tried racing online. It is great fun to race against real people who, just like me, make the occasional error. However, I find it very frustrating to be punted at the very first corner and even worse to find that I can't avoid an accident caused by some one who has qualified well in front of me and should know better. Why is there a desperate need to pass every car before T1? I may get flamed for saying this but here goes anyway. I think that some guys out there can put in a one-off quick qualifying lap (e.g. 1:28:xx at Monza) but are completely unable to run consistently for any more than a single lap. There is nothing worse than qualifying well after a 15min session only to have it ruined 15 seconds into the race. I wouldn't mind so much, but some of us still have to pay for our call time. I only believe that this problem is not going to go away as GPL via VROC becomes even more popular with the advent of call free ISP's and cable modems in Europe. Perhaps someone can let me know how to join an online league where presumably such dragster starts and over exuberance is less prevalent. Cheers Stewart

(applause) I'm with you in that I can't understand people that don't stick around. Its an old saying that you race with the guy in front of you. Lots of good racing is available down through the pack if theres anyone there. Stick around and learn how to race the other guy and we'll all be better racers for it. Next time someone ruins a race at the start, save the replay and have a look what hapenned. You may find it was no one's fault. All you need is a lag spike or a few lost packets, or even someone playing with a high ping and that alone can cause a crash. What irritates me is the people who disconnect just because they got involved in a turn one shunt. You can have just as much fun racing for 6th or 10th as racing for the podium places. In all my time on Vroc i've never deliberately disconnected, not even once. I always finish the race, even if I'm last.

I at one point even gave up on qualifying. I'm usually last or 2nd to last, so why bother?<g> Typically, what happens is this: I'm 14th or 15th out of 15 cars. 7 or 8 cars crash ahead of me in the first corner. If I can make it through the carnage unscathed, I'm in the top 10. About half of the cars that crash disco. The rest catch me within a lap. Remember I'm the slowest guy on the track...<g> In another lap or so I pass another bunch of cars that had a rendezvous. About half of THEM utter expletives, then disco. By the time the survivors catch me, pass me, and disappear into the distance, the cars have thinned out enough that they can go the rest of the race without incident. I usually spend the rest of the race tooling aroud the track by myself. Unless it's a longer race, in which case I get lapped, and have to dodge the hotshoes charging by. Each time I pass someone who's spun off, then I worry about them punting me in their hast to get back to the front. It's not always a good experience, and driving along by myself DOES get boring... I still haven't quit a race because I was last. I quit one Sunday because I screwed up my fuel load, and didn't think it was sporting to Shift-r to refuel(league race). <shrug> Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Own Grand Prix Legends? Even though I appreciate your problem, and it's happened to me many times, I'd much rather have lots more people playing, even if they aren't all brilliant. At the moment you generally only have 40 or so people on VROC, 20 of which are all in a race at either the Glen or Monza. It would be nice to have more races and at different tracks. - Michael

I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one that stayed online no matter what. I actually placed 6 out of 7 last night because I was able to race the whole race with less problems than the 7th place finisher. I was very happy to find that last night I was the only idiot that had a problem at turn 1 at Monza, but as there was only one car behind me and I just stuffed a tire in the bushes prior to the turn and no one else was affected. I then passed 3 cars by the second lesmo. They all passed me back by lap 2, but I had fun none the less. I would have to say it was one of my better races. I have even finished races when I am the only one still there! if for no other reason that I need the practice. I am only sort-of good at four tracks any way so . . . Just look for a slow Ferrari with a gold helmet and it will prolly be me. :-) Just call me the Turtle/Tortoise. SLG [email hidden] (Folco) wrote:

Well, i've to admit, I'm one of the people who do disconnect after an accident... Reasons: a/ I hardly use Shift-R. When I allow myself to use Shift R, a crash just means a slower laptime. When I don't, Shift R is end of race. The latter will force me to drive clean. I've seen people race in a funny way, don't brake, just crash, and use Shift R. Pinball racing... b/ Most of the time a crash is caused by a bonehead, who can't race clean. IF I do Shift R, and continue to race, I will "race" this same person after a few turns again. When I've passed that person, 9 out of 10 this person will forget to brake, hitting me in the rear. Trust me, that gets boring soon... Remco "Simon Brown" <[email hidden]> wrote:

There is one big reason for all these problems: you can't get killed or hurt in GPL. Real life racing is dangerous, and makes you drive more carefully. Sollution? Make a USB device that will give you electro shocks if you hit another car. The heavier you crask, the more it should hurt. Its the same as force feedback, only more intense. (Of course you can attach the device to any part of your body you want to...) :)
> It doesn't bother me too much if the servers are > idle, because I don't have to pay anything for them. 1st, a quick thanks for the servers. 2nd, it's a mystery to me why Monza still draws the crowds, but it certainly does. Mind you, I and others are probably drawn to a busy server which means I race Monza far more online than I have ever have done off (well, apart from when it was released in the demo months). WG is a great racing track IMO, but Mosport and Zandvoort are probably my favourites and neither are too popular...especially if Monza's available <g>. In fact Mosport's probably less popular than the NRing! Maybe a lot of people don't actually feel comfortable on many tracks? There's a difference between being able to race offline and feeling confident enough to face a packed grid online. Andrew McP
Hey, I never give up either, and with 3 wheels (provided, the right front is missing), I did several laps running at 3:44ish in Spa, I even recall a nice battle with Tim Wheatley long ago, we both were left with 3 wheels and had one of the best battles with our sidecars....... try it out, Spa really roxx like that, careful on entering masta tho, u start off going left there! :). In Monaco I also finished a pro-race as a 3-wheeler......1:48's were possible there for me. How about a patch for GPL, u know what I mean! :) cya Maaki -- ________________________________ Check out my home once in a while: http://www.maaki.de.vu ........still a lot of work to be done ________________________________ Jan Verschueren <[email hidden]> schrieb in im Newsbeitrag: L74P4.77294$[email hidden]... > I second that. > > However, finishing a Pro race with a wheel missing is beyond my capabilities > ;-)

Can't you play around with the .ini files for the tracks so that those novice or intermediate races - depending on how you want to do it - are of a more suitable length. Novice races seem so short that they are more like sprints. Even intermediate ones can feel that way sometimes. Going back to discoing because of a crash. I have now decided to do so if I am the cause of the pile-up on the first lap or through my driving cause someone to be not able to continue. My thinking being that, if I have to disco because my bad driving has wrecked someone else race, then hopefully it will make me a more careful driver and hence be the cause of fewer accidents. If I drive around thinking that bad driving has no consequences then I'm not going to improve myself in any way to avoid accidents when dicing. Apart from that I will race until I cannot continue, am just being plain crap (crashing every lap), or everyone else has left. <g> -- Peter Ives - (AKA Ivington) No person's opinions can be said to be more correct than another's, because each is the sole judge of his or her own experience.

Ok, so what would be a suitable length? It doesn't bother me to race any length race online. I even tried a GP race. When it got down to just two of us, he gave me the victory, and quit. But, we both knew who was faster... Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Own Grand Prix Legends? Goto http://gpl.gamestats.com/vroc Never argue with an idiot.
