Super 1 Karting: realistic kart sim or just a game?

Users discussed the newly released Super 1 Karting. Real karters disagreed: Andre Warringa and John Pavlicek found the physics, AI and force feedback convincing, while Alexander Marx and Larry Hawes said it felt nothing like a real kart. Andre's tip to set the deadzone to zero in the gp.cfg file cured the steering lag many reported, and online play over Kali was said to be poor.

I tried the demo, and while it may be fun - it is nothing like the real thing, in which I have plenty of experience. The main problem with the demo is IMO the slow and unresponsive steering and the unrealistic brakes, but it is possible that they made at least the steering adjustable in the full version. Has anyone played the full version yet ? cheers, Alex

Was wondering if anyone has played the game? Demo excites me, now looking for the full game.

Damn nice game. And for once I can compare the sim to the real thing. If you like this sort of racing, this is extremely fun. Especially good for a quick game of racing. The graphics are awesome. Get off the track and you start bouncing around exactly like real life. I highly recommend it. -Pav Cuda <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:CU4P4.192547$[email hidden]... > Was wondering if anyone has played the game? Pav, I have done some Kart racing and tried the Super 1 demo and was disappointed. Do you have the full version? Is it better than the demo? Do you consider it a racing game or a racing sim? Thanks Larry John Pavlicek wrote:

I got the full version. I was actually out with some karts this weekend. There are some flaws, but I think a lot of it has to do with the "feel" of the race. About the only thing that got me was that it was next to impossible to slide through the turns. The acceleration/deceleration was pretty good as was normal turning. For what I believe to be the first kart sim, it did pretty well, at least well enough until I get to play with karts in another year. -Pav Larry Hawes <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I love it, I think it's very realistic, and I've done my share of real life Karting too. AI is very good, agressive and very competitive, excellent physics and force feedback (which can be adjusted in a lot of ways), changeable weather, realistic damage, reasonable setup options (haven't experimented with those though) and graphically everything looks just right. If you like Karting, you shouldn't miss this one imho. Just check out the demo before you buy, it gives a good impression of the full game (except for the AI which has been improved greatly since the demo). Negative points: Only 10 tracks, no indoor tracks, and unfortunately no track editor. Now that would have been great, to be able to build all my favorite real life tracks... For all you Dutch people, be sure to visit the new karting centre in Delft. 4 storages, superb tracks, and if you go on Sunday evening, the 2 biggest tracks are connected. Imho the best karting track in Holland. And they also have 4 x the Ferrari 355 Challenge :) Andre

The only thing, i don't like, it's the multiplayer play through Kali, isn't good at all, poor framerate !!!!!, even unplayable online !!!, don't know about Lan play though?! Cuda wrote: > Was wondering if anyone has played the game? Demo excites me, now looking > for the full game.

Just tried the demo again and it is a lot worse than I remember. Perhaps it is my machine PIII 500 V3000 128 megs ram SBLive, but the frame rates are so bad it is undrivable. Also it seems that only single axis controller is available or something weird that applies the break as you let off the gas. Like going fast into a corner I let off and it screeches to a halt. I have that weird "F10" arcade view I can't seem to change, then it changes by itself. It jerks all over the place and is in a word undrivable. I have heard these types of complaints before and it is usually a simple adjustment I am missing but I can't seem to get it to work. Needless to say very difficult to get too excited about the full version. Any one with an obvious fix or something I may be missing? Larry [email hidden] wrote:

try setting your controller to single axis... if u have it set to dual axis which it sounds like u do, u will see that gas/brake problem Md Larry Hawes wrote:

Thanks Martyn, That cured the braking problem but there is still a long delay between turning the steering wheel and turning the Kart. Still not possible to drive an entire lap. and yes it could be that I am just lame but I have no problems with any other sims. I am getting into kart racing and would love to have good sim but I am still stumped. Thanks again Larry Martyn Danby wrote:

There's a cfg file in the main directory, open it and change the deadzone settings to 0. This will cure your steering problems (it did for me at least). I have a PIII 500, resolution 1024 and all details to the max + 24 AI drivers, and have a perfectly smooth fps. To your viewing problem: when a race starts, you will see your kart from the outside view. Just before you cross the start line and you get to control the kart, the view switches to your last chosen view. Configure one of your buttons to select the cam view, and choose your preferred view as soon as the race starts. This game is really good, I spent a couple of hours with it yesterday. Liked it from the beginning, and after a couple of hours the game only grew on me. Andre On Tue, 02 May 2000 03:33:41 GMT, Larry Hawes <[email hidden]> wrote:

Andre, Thanks for the reply. It does appear that the deadzone is the problem and I can see a gp.cfg files in the main directory but don't know how to open it. Is this the one and how do I open it? Larry Andre Warringa wrote:

That's the one. Double-click it & it'll prompt you what you want to open it with. Select Notepad. All the way at the bottom is where the dead zone setting is. Before this tweak, I couldn't drive these things with any control at all. Now they're a real blast! Do these things really slide around this much in real life though? When you give too much gas in a corner the cars spins just as easily as it does in real life. Karting is a perfect way to learn how to drive the perfect lines and keeping speed through corners. When I Karted for the first time, I felt that I was going very fast since my tires were screeching all the time, and I braked so late before a corner that I had to use all my strength to turn around the corner. As you can imagine, my lap times were way below average. I soon learned how to brake just a tad earlier, so I could carry more speed through the corner and get faster out of the corner. Same thing goes for the game, when you hear your tires screeching, you're doing something wrong... Andre

Man, I did a lot wrong last night when I won a heat & got 2nd in the race!<g> Got beat just yards from the S/F line. You're right though, I was quicker with less tire squeal. Still had quite a bit though. Think my best lap was 55.6xx, this is whatever track you get in the demo. When will it be released in the States? -- Chuck Kandler #70 K&S Racing http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/thepits/195 Competitor in the TopGear MGPRS2 league at: http://topgear.dhs.org/ Come on & join the fun! I've finally found a racing game that catches my interest since I found out about GP3. After much screwing around convincing the stupid demo that it should not talk to the old Diamond Monster card but to the TNT2 card, it ran. After 1 race using the keyboard, I plugged in the wheel and voila, instant racing cred. It's been a while since I have driven a kart, and this game reminded me just how much fun it is. The physics are great, though I have found that it sometimes jumps and I find myself either stopped or off the track. Don't know why. The fact that the AI cars can blast me away down the straight pisses me off. Otherwise, they are slow, my best lap time for the demo is 54.1xx. I just don't know how to screw around with the setup. Frame rate is great on my P2 233 192mb TNT2/32mb with 800x600 with medium detail and 12 cars. If I had the money I would buy it without hesitation and wait to upgrade my PC before GP3. Thanks for all the help but I'm done with Super Karting. Can NOT get it to drive anything like a kart and it might be something with my setup but any more effort and it is time for another sim. Best of luck to all and again thanks for the help. Larry Ryath wrote:

I just returned from a real life kart race (3rd this week :) and I think that Super Kart is quite close to real karting. Oh well, real or not real, I enjoy this game very much. I think it's a blast! Not to kill the apparent excitement over this game but I would like to add my agreement to your viewpoint Alexander. Perhaps a fun game but a kart sim? Not IMHO. Alexander Marx wrote:

Ok next question. Where can I get it. I am unable to find it in any of my local stores. I'm in BC, Canada. Please respond to [email hidden]

I'm in the unimpressed group too.
