Don't forget to give him a little bump in the gearbox before you pass him. :)
Maybe if you take him out enough, he won't attempt to send your car vaulting
over the catch fence anymore?

Surtees the AI rear-ender and the real Surtees' 1965 crash
Players joked about GPL's AI John Surtees running into them, especially at Parabolica, and shared ways to avoid him. The thread then turned to the real Surtees' near-fatal 1965 crash in a Lola T70 at Mosport, with Bruce Kennewell and others working out which series the race belonged to.
Automated summary.

LOL- nice shots! But you're usually ok unless you try to brake with him on
your tail. But seeing him there like that would give me the shakes too.
:-)
(And I'd forgotten that the "Murasama" had a black stripe- the blood red
stripe and meatball on the Honda mod car I have is much more frightening in
the rear view mirror <g>)

You wait till you reach Parabolica. He'll have you there! I've found the
trick with him is to brake a bit earlier into Parabolica but stick to the
right hand side of the road. That way he stays on the racing line and
doesn't take you off. You can then overtake him on the straight.
BTW, thanks for my appointment as Chief Engineer of Team Backmarker. I
guess this means I'll have to work on setups for other circuits now!
Cheers

What happened -- did someone decide to punt him off the track? :o))
Seriously though, can anyone shed any light on the big accident mentioned
above?

The other day I was having a blast round Monza. After the start
Brabham was behind me and followed me for a several laps. He
seemed to have no trouble avoiding running into me under braking.
Unfortunatly Surtees managed to overtake him and inevitably took
me out next time we went by Parabolica!!
Just proves it isn't our imagination!!

I wonder how long it is before his descendants decide to sue Papy / Sierra

Indeed JS suffered a near fatal accident in 1965. The accident happened at
the Mosport Can-Am race and not in a F1 car. He was driving a Lola-Chevrolet
T70. I don't recall exactly what happened in any detail, suffice to say that
it precluded him from competing in the final two GP rounds of the year at
the Glen and Mexico.

My former post concured with yours. However, it looks as though it was a
1965 sportscar race although I cannot be more specific as to what series. I
sourced this much from Maclaren, the Grand Prix, Can-Am and Indycars by Doug
Nye. This is heavily edited and not verbatim.
" Maclaren's 1965 efforts were concentrated on the sportscars for the 1965
season.
The season kicked off at Silverstone as a supporting race for the F2 Senior
Service 200 on March 20th. (abandoned due to torrential rain on lap 18 of
the scheduled 25). Winner - Clark (Lotus 30).
<snipped mid season>
Guards Trophy - Brands Hatch, August 30th. Bruce Maclaren ran a 5-litre
Maclaren - Elva- Oldsmobile (Traco - Olds) but was beaten into second place
by Surtees in the stronger litre Lola-Chev.
St Jovite- September 18. Maclaren ran the new prototype M2A. DNS due to
broken crank in practice. Surtees won again.
Mosport - the following weekend. Some confusion might lie here to the
unwitting as this was announced as the Canadial GP. Surtees was hurt in
practice due to suspension failure on the Lola. Race was won (on aggregate
over 2 heats) by Jim Hall (Car unspecified) by 1.8 seconds over Maclaren.

Interesting point with respect to St Jovite, although my sources concur with
your original post about the T70. Hmmm. This is worthy of a trip to the
library I think.

A little more info........
He sustained multiple injuries when he crashed a Lola T70 sports car while
practising for a Can- Am race at Mosport Park, near Toronto, shortly after
the Italian Grand Prix in September. For a few days it seemed as though
Surtees might not survive, but he fought back to recover from his injuries
with a characteristic tenacity which saw him back in a Ferrari - and winning
again - early in 1966.

That's not right....it couldn't have been a CanAm race.
I am SURE that the Can Am didn't commence until season 1966, the first race
being at St. Jovite the first weekend in September.
I wonder what the race was at Mosport?.......it wasn't the Players 200....he
was okay in that.

Ah, thank you! I appreciate it. This error is easy to make (for me),
since:
"I learned to brake" is translated into Dutch as "Ik leerde hoe te
remmen."
and
"Mr. Surtees taught me to brake" is translated as "Mnr. Surtees leerde
mij hoe te remmen."
In both cases "leerde" is used in Dutch....
