Why do the torture us with screenshots like this? Maybe just so we can start saving for CPU upgrades again? 6 months to convice my wife I need to upgrade again, after having done so only 5 months ago to a PIII600mhz system. Women, why can't the understand our need for speed? Now all we will need is a good "affordable" VR headset. Anyway the shots looks awesome. Papy will all ways be #1. Thanks Papy.... for all the years of great sims. Morris

Morris, you might be able to get away with just a video card upgrade, but I suggest you wait until N4 is released to do so. Of course, in 6 months, CPU prices for everything slower than 1ghz may have sunk significantly as well, so verify that you can put a faster CPU in your system. Papy isn't doing N4 to force everyone to upgrade - they're doing N4 because we want them to, so any additional CPU load or graphics card requirements are pretty much our fault. :-) Start saving now. I would suggest setting a goal of $750 for new hardware (in your case) and that might be sufficient (depends on cost of faster CPU's by November). Last piece of advice - Don't fight it. Upgrades are a necessary evil if you want to play the newest games with decent framerates. If you want the eye candy or features, those things require more power. Or is it simply easier to write programs that use powerful machines rather than come up with innovative solutions to gain more performance from the same basic specification? I would say an interest in gaming (esp. 3D gaming) on a PC is possibly the fastest way to waste money these days. To illustrate, the owner of a PlayStation can apparently obtain similar games without being required to buy hardware each time. I accept the PSX versions may not have the same graphical performance - but I didn't hear many people suggesting NFS 3 or SCGT would stand up to Gran Turismo in the entertainment stakes. I've lost count of the number of times people ask how to play GT on a PC in this group. -Steve

My friend, even if Jeniffer Lopez (or any other woman you admire) was yours to be with, in time you would want to look (and, I hope, nothing more) at other women. It's called diversity, and does not have much to do with the relative qualities. ;) -Gregor

I have a 3dfx 3500 now, I hope that would be enough but I doubt it. GPL and N3 run great now. Maybe I'll get lucky and can just get a processor and video card. John Simmons wrote:

Well Steven.... The biggest cpu/memory/hdd hog is the graphics these days, PSX etc can't come close in this department. But I do wonder along the same lines as you. With these screaming fast cpu's (compared to even 1 yr ago) and i heard that a 73 gig ide hdd has just been released, does it encourage laziness on the programmers part? It was different when all we had was 640kb (dos days) to run a game. Man did I hate those not enough ememory errors!! lol You can bet that if for some strange reason, CPU's all of a sudden couldn't be built to go any faster, and HDD's no bigger, that we would see some innovation. my thots... Diversity has little to do with it, Gregor. Of course it does! But the thing is, that because of the speed these games are being produced there is no way you can wait for programmers to come up with ingenious ways to speed up performance, if it will run fairly well on a good spec machine, they are just happy to get it out the door. Saying that, I dont necessarily agree with this, especially in the case of F1 2000. I think it is a great game, but the performance is terrible...but this is the perfect example....it was written in 9 months!! I think that it was a fantastic job for 9 months work and I cannot wait to see 2001, i think it will be fantastic! Sorry ...what was I saying...I forget :) Well I reckon the problem is with the publishers and promoters of the game rather than the laziness of the programmers......they dont have time to be too fancy!
