Of course he's loaded, but that still represents about 10 - 20% of his
annual income. I made my own modest effort, 10-20%... think about it. That
is a substantial gesture, and it will be interesting to see who else steps
up. Schumy's "neighbours" (Tina Turner, Phil Collins, IKEA founder, several
major bankers etc.) here in Switzerland have comparable wealth, but I
haven't heard much noise about their donations.

Maybe they prefer *not* to talk about it in public?
Just a thought.

Entirely true. Some choose to be anonymous, some disclose their
contribution, perhaps to motivate others. It turns out Schumy had a very
personal reason to donate (his bodyguard and bodyguard's children were
killed in the flood). Every donation is great, no matter the amount.

Talking can help raise more funds as others may feel they're put to shame if
they don't donate. I think if someone seriously wants to support someone or
something, he'll donate and then talk about it, to make others follow his example.

Good job Mitch, not that it'll help though imo; with the widespread
corruption in that part of the world, I'd be surprised if a lot of the aid,
especially $, ever gets to where its needed. That, and the various ethnic
groups, tribes, etc use the donated food, etc. as a weapon too, ala Somalia.
But hopefully I'll be wrong <g>

I have to think a $10 million anonymous donation would be just as effective.

It would be impossible for the world's most famous sports star to make an
anonymous 10 million dollar donation.

The way I see it, Schumi so far is the only F1 driver having made a major
contribution. His example could exert a certain pressure on others in F1 to
follow his example.
Hence, I think it's good he (or rather his management) made it public. There's
so much money in F1. I'm surprised nobody has asked yet where F1's contribution is.
Maybe they've all donated anonymously - but I doubt it.
Schumi's contribution will put some pressure on the others in F1.

No need to worry.
The major charity organisations have direct control up to the receivers.
It's not like other countries where you have to deliver to the doorstep and then
go home w/o possibility of control.

PS: corruption is also present here but works different.

Maybe, but if it's true it would only prove Dave's statement wrong if there were
any one sports star known to more than 5% of world's human population :)

I doubt that <g> It's already being reported in some areas.
p.s. yep, corruption is present here, but it's not a systemic, cultural,
accepted way of life as in that part of the world.

I should have added some more things in my recent statement.
Not sure if you know but I live in that area, i.e. Malaysia.
Corruption is quite an issue here but unlike Mafia-style it concentrates on
stuff like getting an approval here and there, how to avoid puspakom (Tuev,
MOT,...) once the roadtax has expired too long, avoiding expensive (and time
consuming) summons by road-block contributions.
