Wish list for Papyrus's next 'Legends' title
Fans proposed future Papyrus 'Legends' games, including sports car, touring car, Can-Am, USAC and turbo-era or 1982 Formula One versions of GPL. Ymenard and others doubted Sierra would approve another, since both Legends titles had sold poorly, and Ed Solheim noted that Dave Kaemmer was reportedly not keen on a sports car sim. The thread drifted into memories of Bathurst and touring car racing.
Automated summary.
And I'd be next in line, cash in hand!

Well i think papy should go by decades for grand prix cars like
GPL 2 1970s'
GPL 3 1980s' ::drooling:: :)
etc
Thats in my opinion.
Well CART Legends might be a bit of a waste considering they cold just make a
modern CART sim and have a "retro mode" where you can run the now defunct
tracks (and old configurations of current ones) in addition to some of the old
cars like the March, the 80s Penskes (PC-1 thru PC-3 I belive), and the old
Buick and Judd engines. Wow im drooling just thinking about this.
Unfortunatley neither CART or Legends seem to be in the Sierra/Havas dictionary
so this is doubtful. I would like Papy to go back to making something other
than NASCAR sims (yes I like them...but 4 is enough!!).
However personally I would like to see Sports Car Legends. The thought of
driving a Porsche 906 or 908 is just too much to bear :)

appropriate cars, tracks and info. for any motor sport you'd care to
recreate.
One multi-purpose physics/graphics engine, with unlimited combinations
of everything!
By the time this has been developed, the internet should be faster, so
the 'server' of each race can dictate which cars & track to use by
downloading them to the clients (synchronizing problems solved). Also,
everyone will be running 8ghz HurgleFlump Processors (TM), which can
also be used to cook your breakfast if you remove the shielding... Oh
no, sorry, my mistake - that happens above 700mhz, doesn't it? And
maybe even MicroPants will have been split up by then ;)

or 1982.
In 1982 you would have a wide range of machinery available, all
very differant but all possible to win:
The Turbos. These cars had an advantage at the altitude circuit
(Kyalami) and the power circuits; Monza, Hockenheim etc.
Renault: The Renault that year was quite often the fastest
during qualifying but was let down by poor reliability in the
races.
Ferrari: Possibly the best car of the year, championship hopes
dashed by Villeneuve dieing and Pironi attemting a similar fate.
Brabham - BMW: Became one of the fastest cars towards the end
of the year. Piquet won one race in Canada. Half way through
the season Brabham introduced refueling which allowed them to
use their power advantage to the upmost to gain an early lead.
These tactics didn't work that year but led to what is now a
part of F1 racing.
Toleman - Hart: After managing to achieve non-qualification in
all but 3 races during the previous one and a half seasons,
Toleman finally came right and Warwick managed fastest lap at
Zandvoort and amazingly (and I was there to witness it) ran
second to a Niki Lauda for a while at Brands Hatch.
The Normally aspirated. Reliable, quick on slower and medium
speed tracks:
Brabham: After a dissapointing first race Brabham resorted to
the DFV powered car. Success came in Brazil till Piquet was
disqualified. Piquet then ran the BMW engine while Patrese
stuck with the DFV, scoring a win at Monaco.
Willaims: Starting the season with the still competitive FW07,
switched to the even better FW08 by Zolder. Rosberg was quite
often beaten by the Turbos and even other DFV cars. Consistant
points finishes and a brilliant win at Dijon brought the
championship.
Tyrrell: Michele Alboreto was often battling with Rosberg and
was always at the front of the DFV "gang". Won the final round
at Ceasers Palace.
Mclaren: John Watson was runner up to Rosberg, he won at Zolder
and Detroit. Lauda won at Long Beach and Brands Hatch. Despite
these sucesses they were off pace at plenty of tracks.
Alfa Romeo: De Ceseris scored a pole at Long Beach and ran
second till putting it into the wall. Surprise! Surprise!
The rest of the field were also rans. As you can see 1982 had
more race winners than many season before or since.
Anyone who remembers Rosberg and Villeneuve at Long Beach that
year will understand the differance between the Turbos Power and
the DFV's handling. Villeneuve was much faster on the straight
and would come from 100 metres back at the start of the straight
and just power by keke before the end. Through the twisty
section Keke would just be able to get past Gilles as the
Williams had superior handling. Back to the straight and Gilles
would come like a rocket and pass Rosberg again. Eventually
Gilles spun while braking at the end of the straight after
slightly over doing it.
Seeing as Spa was used again in 1983, maybe that could replace
Zolder. The rest of the tracks should be okay.
Would be an interesting sim if it had the same attention to
detail that GPL had.

But let's face it: no-one would ever race on-line with anything but
the turbos. It would be the Lotus thang just a million times worse.
Plus you'd have to worry about a rampaging Jean-Marie Balestre running
over the track, driving alone on the track while the AI drivers sit on
strike in the motorhomes and worry about your moustache catching fire.

For pure commercial Appeal, "TV Legends", with "The General Lee" from the
"Dukes of Hazzard", KITT from "Knight Rider" and other famous cars from
films or TV. Then you could *be* Starsky and Hutch, at the Nurburgring, or
thrash Steve McQueen's Mustang round Hockenheim. Naturally, it could still

Considering both "Legends" software by Papyrus are flops, we can't bet high
that the powers-that-be suits at Sierra will green light another legend-type
simulator, even if many of us would love to see them.
It's just not popular enough for the mass market, and that's how Sierra
works.

You missed repackaging and re-repackaging such as SIERRA's milk moneyers
NASCAR : Deceleration pack and NASCAR Racing : 1999 buggy Edition. You also
missed NASCAR "nobody races it online" Legends.
Soon they will re-release Nascar Racing 1 as Nascar Racing Legends : 1993.
Of course with the old game engine. You also ommited the obvious Nascar
Racing 4 : Truck expansion pack.

1988 would be another good one, as there would be a choice of Turbos or
Normally-Aspirated engines, and drivers lie Senna, Prost, Mansell et al
to race against.
Although Papy would probably need to include an option which allows a
host to ban anyone driving the McLaren in online races :-)

Well I was counting complete sims like N1 plus the expansion pack is one. N2
and BGN and N@50 are all the same thing. N99 added the trucks. Now we have N3
and the N3 trucks...that would be four. Oh and NL but I was talking modern.
Now theoretically your right in that there are 8 total NASCAR related things
from Papy but thats not the way I was counting it. So yes i can count :) (BTW

Why oh why oh why do you guys want to drive turbo cars in a sim???????????
The turbo cars were actually complete pigs to drive with horrific turbo lag.
How many of you hate how the BRM delivers its power? nothing, nothing,
nothing BANG!! it makes the car feel heavy and unresponsive ..... that is
an 80s turbo F1 car for you.
Most of the drivers disliked the actual driving experience of the turbo cars
but the sheer power (1400bhp + in qualifying) made them so mind blowingly
fast that there was a real thrill to them.
This thrill though would never translate to a sim though, so all you are
left with is a sim full of unweildy unresponsive cars....
I'd be happy to have GPL2 based in 1982 for all the reasons chris dictated
..... it was an awesome year in F1s history, with 7 different constructors
winning races that year. But most importantly I could drive a sweet handling
DFV powered cars like the FW08b and run rings around your turbo cars.
Fortunately I think that the papy team have a good enough undestanding of
race car dynamics so as not to make a GPL sequel set in the years after
1982.
My choice? Well it has to be 1976 ... last year of the proper ring....
normally aspirated cars not very reliant on downforce and a 6 wheel tyrell
to boot :)
82 would also be great for a sequel, but please please no horrible turbo
only F1 sims :( 1983 - 1989 )

oh ... and any sports car legends sim from 60s, 70s or 80s would make my

I personally would love to see any friggin F1 season using the GPL game
engine. Anything! Well, anything that Gilles once raced :) Of course we
know how pathetic Sierra wants their racing title to please the mass market
and simply don't understand the value of targeting smaller groups like
Flight simulators have been able to achieve.

Exactly my point. my origianl comment...
How about something like the Tyrrell P-34, maybe AI sophisticated
enough to 'be' Gilles Villeneuve?
Never happen....
And it won't. Maybe cross the AI from a snowmobile-racing sim,
sprinkle a little b-group rally, and make it all F1.
Heck, it would be fun just to set it on autopilot and watch the AI
simulate Gilles.
Anybody with a tape of the Dijon race in '79 will get a case of good
quality homebrew for a copy...
And yes, you can collect at the GP of Canada this June....

If you haven't seen it yet...SCGT car builders have produced the Mk 8
McClaren in all it's orange glory. Funny, when the modern-day Mclaren
unveiled it's new car last year, the WEST sponsorship wasn't finalized
yet, so they debut'd the car in traditional McClaren Orange...I was
suprised to find that the new car didn't 'Look' right in the old color.
(of course I still think current F1 cars are some of the OOGLIEST racers
around)

Certainly at the beginning of the so-called "turbo decade", when Ranault set
the ball rolling, the lag was horrific.
However, by the time the FIA in its infinite wisdom called a halt to turbo
proceedings the lag had almost disappeared.
A similar thing occurred in road-going car....the original SAAB Turbo
behaved significantly differently to current turb-assisted vehicles.

Forgetting a few here;
NR1999
Nascar Legends
Nascar Acceleration Pack
N2 All American Edition
N2/BGN for Playstation
So lets make that 13 to 4...
Unfortunatly, Papyrus isn't the big problem... the suits at Sierra are.
Papy only got one "tiny" problem... Kaemmer is said to not be keen on
creating a Sportscar sim.. and *thats* a huge shame...
If theres one sim I'de love to buy multiple copies of.. it would be Can-Am
Legends!

Preying Mantis the way the nose is elevated. And the square foot boxes
like in the McClarens just don't doit for me. I STILL, after a year and
half, can't get used to those rollbar cameras with the wheels pinched in
and the elevated nose blocking the front of the car...just doesn't seem
right. Gimmie the Ferrari's of Prost and Mansell, the McLarens of Prost

Prost, Hill, Villenuve. The earlier williams had that funny hump on the
nose too.
I like wings...big wings..not those tiny 3 element breakable jobbies
they use today. Because of that...the WSC cars always catch my eyes,
that big wing going the full width of the car on a SP333, or R&S
MKIII. The newer Sports cars all have a F1 nose built between the
front-wheel fenders...yuck!(Lola, Reynard, Audi) Sure they may be
faster...but they just don't have the "look." And the CART Lola from
the eary '90's has what should be a classic shape. Mikey Andretti's
VERY POINTED nose bumping up against rear facing in-car camera shots.
Those were cool. Todays cars all look like they once had a broken nose
that healed poorly. (recurring theme here)

Brakes AND wheel bearings if memory serves me right :-), it was about
then they said that the big V8's would never win at Bathurst....

From what I've seen, I'd agree, but the V8's in the early 90's where a
good show as well, there's the opening of the wet race in 91 or 92 on
those tapes, Brock and Perkins going at it, sliding those cars like they
were rally cars on a short sprint, awesome, must have seen those opening
laps 50 times by now
Beers and cheers

The early years were the ones that I used to attend occassionally (at
Bathurst, that is....not Philip Island). Interesting mixture, indeed. I
remember one year the police ran a Studebaker Lark (V8) that peed all over
the competition going UP the mountain but quickly ran out of brakes coming
DOWN the hill!! :-)
But the years of the Minis and Cortinas, then the Holden Monaros, Ford
Falcon GTs and the Chrysler Chargers were phenomenal......in my mind some of
the most entertaining Aussie motor-racing of all time.
