It looks real nice, but if you notice, the shadow of the fence falls onto the track in a non-directional way... I have to imagine it's mapped on... I think real-time ray traced shadows are still a few years away yet, for any game. The shadows in N4 create a nice effect which is all that's needed.
The effect accomplished with the stencil buffer to generate realtime shadows is good enough. I do believe if you use an accumulation buffer, you can generate soft shadows. But as stated before or somewhere else, N4 isn't finished yet, and so are the shadows. If you have Quake 3 Arena, you can see what stencil buffer shadows can do (with the right settings enabled). An item, for example, which casts a shadow and is close to a wall will cast a shadow on the floor which in turn bends against the wall. Fire a rocket near it and watch the position of the shadow change. Better yet, go to NVIDIA's developer section. There are a few demos on stencil buffered shadows. GM Sal V. Eric Busch has already stated that the shadows aren't completed yet (something to do with the position of the sun not being set yet I think). Don't panic - yet... :-) In article <KzGS4.185638$[email hidden]>, [email hidden] says...

if you watch the n4 video closely you can see the shadow flickering around the cars improperly especially the footage from above. Even if it was messed id love it. Im sure it will be fixed by the time we get it. John Simmons wrote in message ...
