rFactor screenshots and the value of licensed content

David G Fisher posted new rFactor screenshots showing open-wheel cars. Some called it a 'higher budget LFS' and asked where the real cars and tracks were. Others argued that licences were costly and that modders would quickly add real content. Posters also debated whether user-made tracks such as those for LFS could match official ones.

I'm still callin' it a higher budget version of LFS with way too much bumpmapping. Mike http://mikebeauchamp.com "David G Fisher" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

They'll be there five minutes after the sim is released, and you know that I guess they could pay a shit load of money in order to put a licensed paint job (with all the pretty ads for garbage) on just one type of car, for one series, to make guys like you happy. Maybe they could make another F1 sim with restrictions on multiplay so then we could hear guys bitching about how it's not good enough and nobody does it as good as Papy.....blah...blah....blah.? Isn't the NASCAR license unavailable? Did you want them to do a series that nobody really cares about just so they can claim the cars have a real paint job? -- David G Fisher

Nah. Real cars don't have to be expensive. Just model stuff that is easy to license. Not Ferrari, but hey why not an old LOTUS, or a Formula Ford, etc.. Same for tracks, they are cheap. -- -- Franois Mnard <ymenard> -- This announcement is brought to you by the Shimago-Dominguez Corporation - helping America into the New World...

So they model an old Lotus, on some real but obscure tracks. What does that change? I will still immediately want the F1 and modern sports cars, along with all the well known tracks that are available for F1C. The old Lotus (that had to be paid for) sits in the garage, and the obscure tracks (that had to be paid for) are ignored, and they haven't made the sim any more legitimate. Great physics, graphics, sound and multiplay is what I want. -- David G Fisher

just to be more pedantic, those don't even look like F1 cars but F Renault cars - all the same, open wheels are open wheels. "Damien Smith" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I'm checking out all my sims online at the moment, and the vast, vast majority is run on real tracks and real cars. Even third-party stuff, of course they will do real tracks and real cars. It's just that, we as users imho never make tracks as good as the original ones. Especially if there is talent (ISI) creating them behind. Sure there will be hardcore freaks who will spend months recreating Le Mans or whatever, but overall I like when buying my sims, not to have to wait 6 months until barely raceable tracks find their way on the net.

You've got a point, but hey people are still racing Cup cars massively in NR2003 no? btw I'll take the Lotus please instead ;) -- -- Franois Mnard <ymenard> -- This announcement is brought to you by the Shimago-Dominguez Corporation - helping America into the New World...

In that case, you'll end up buying a sim with all the "right" tracks and "right" cars, it will be shit to drive, it will have support for the mainstream controllers only and will simulate no aspect of roadracing. Because every penny went into the legal department. If *you* want to spend your shitloads of money on that, be my guess. I won't. ---A---

I meant that I am racing N2003 mods online now. TPTCC, and soon it will be GTP. User created cars on user created tracks. None of the Papy original tracks. What's the difference between that and what I will be doing with rFactor, except rFactor will have better physics, graphics, sound, and very possibly multiplayer? That said, I also only want to race on only very high quality mods and tracks. I think there are plenty of good tracks made for F1C that will quickly become available for rFactor, so I'm not concerned at all. -- David G Fisher

For a "fantasy" title, LFS offers very attractive and extremely raceable tracks right out of the box. They are certainly tailored to the lower speed of the cars featured, but they offer a lot of good overtaking possibilities and some nice corner sequences.

I stopped playing LFS because of the tracks. About every track had a 'feature' which wouldn't make it in real life, IMO. The city track for example, which was back then (still is?) very popular online. In some sort of a chicane there was a nasty bump. If you slowed down, you got hit from behind, if you didn't you landed in the armco. Every race it was a mess in that area. Since there is no damage in LFS, racing online was just Quake Deathmatch in cars...even Monza T1 in GPL wasn't that bad.. I do prefer real tracks. Not because I'm such a realism freak, but because I'm too laze to learn them all... Cheers! Remco

Bathurst? The list goes on. There is a certain novelty and atmoshere generated by real life tracks and cars, but if the sim isn't right then that's all out the window. And multi done right is the most important thing for me ----> GPL and Nascar. Both fit into the category of "been there, done that" and neither would have been in my top 5 preferences for a sim in the first place anyway.

Theoretically at least, the track's the same for everybody, so if you have a decent-standard group of racers, this should not be an issue (hard to find in free for all LFS races, I agree). Not only is there a bump, but the track surface changes to cobblestones which seem to be extremely slippery in that section (I *hope* LFS models that, or I've just made myself the laughing stock of RAS ;-) Cheers, uwe -- GPG Fingerprint: 2E 13 20 22 9A 3F 63 7F 67 6F E9 B1 A8 36 A4 61
