Rally Championship 2000: praise and doubts about physics

Colin Harris asked why the excellent Rally Championship got so few posts. Some found its physics floaty or lacking mass, and a real rally participant said the cars had too much grip, while others recommended raising gravity to 110 percent with the latest patch. Rally Masters was suggested as having better handling.

Good Game? After playing the hunk a shit for 5 seconds, i literally went out side, took out my tourch flame and burnt the cd to hell, waste of money I tell ya. NO AI? C'mon, what shit is this, it can barely work itself with a digital controler, and then came the interface, shit, my old Grand Prix Unlimited game from like 1990 was 10x better interface wise? Good question. Maybe it doesn't get more postings because people are actually playing it and don't want to take time away from it to post. Are you playing with the Act Labs wheel and shifter? That combo pushes it dangerously close to a controlled substance. <g> On Tue, 16 May 2000 22:04:58 GMT, "Colin Harris" <[email hidden]> wrote:

I say this partly in jest, but there is some truth to it...If a rally sim requires AI, then it probably isn't a very good rally sim. Hey, your're racing a clock--how smart does a clock have to be? While the "AI" in RC2000 is flawed at best (ever seen the same drivers clean up each round in their respective classes in any rally series? -I haven't) the object of rallying is just you against the clock. Whether the AI is represented on track or not. Would be kinda nice to run across a stranded vehicle once in a while tho'. The nice software companies make arcade games for the likes of you Frank, better make sure you read about a new title here before buying it... unless the posts about it contain the words "steaming pile of arcade rubbish", you will not enjoy the game. Well...... I agree that RC2K is REALLY good But the best of ALL is GPL, and it is definitely the one getting the most posts.... Besides that rally master is fun but a biot boring, the tracks are too short and you run them too often, more arcade than RC2K. Did you change anything else, other than the gravity? You are happy with the physics? The graphics are exceptional, and the stages are beautifully portrayed. The sound is also excellent. But I don't think that's how rally cars are supposed to drive. The cars feel extremely light, and they float when airborne.

Yes, great game. I finish it in the expert level but it wasn't easy. When i had a couple of seconds of time in advance, i had to "spend" them in the repairs mecanics. Pffufff !! Yeah, the 28 minutes section is toilsome. But the very short section "moon and Star" is as toilsome as the 28 minutes section because every second is primordial, every corner is crucial, you can lost a tons of seconds at the first and only mistake. Its a pretty good simulation of a Rally, and by that I mean the event as a whole but the vehicles to me just seem to have way to much grip. I had the privledge not long ago of going for a ride in a ex factory Escort WRC and the things have so much grunt you are able to drive them on just the throttle. (not unlike my old P76 V8 Escort rally Car). May be if you play with the physics a bit you may get it closer to something that feels real. You really need to be able to cut corners at times too. Having said all that we do Rally on mostly quite smooth Gravel Roads in NZ and my impressions could be affected by that. On 18 May 2000 01:47:36 GMT, [email hidden] (David Buttery) wrote:

I think RM is a lot better in that department. Controls are very easy to adjust to just right. The sliding and road handling are LOTS better than RC2000. However, at times it *almost*(not sure though) feels a bit canned. And there are minor other probs, like the car loses to much speed when coasting and is a bit unstable during braking. People not that into rallying(no disrespect intended) seems to think that wide wild slides is associated with Sega Rally:ish arcade games. It's really not. Check this out: http://www.mgr.fi/videoclips/gi.mpg Marcus Grnholm testing in Finland. Now judge if RM or RC2000 looks more like that. And this: http://www.mgr.fi/videoclips/gt.mpg Not having anything to with anything, but that gives me goosebumps... :) /Magnus
