Video of a reckless motorcycle ride around Paris

A poster sought a video of a high-speed motorcycle ride across Paris, and links to the 'Pascal' Périphérique video were shared. Others pointed to the 1970s short car film 'Rendezvous', debated which car was used, condemned the danger to the public, and discussed traffic policing in Europe.

He was playing not only with his own life (which it seems he lost in the end), but with the lives of all those other motorists and pedestrians as well. For what, a thrill ride? If he, you, or anyone, wants to play at being a racer, do it at a controlled racetrack. That way you won't end up killing or maiming innocent people if you're not quite the hotshot you think you are. If so the short film was called "Rendezvous" 1977 This from a movie review page: The most famous motoring footage of all time, or more perhaps infamous. A breathtakingly insane sprint across Paris in a Ferrari. Claude Lelouch has gone for the minimalist approach in the documentation of 'the bet' as legend puts it. No dialogue, no plot, just the sights and sounds of a headlight's eye view of Paris early in the morning as Lelouch tries desperately to traverse the Paris CBD in under 8 minutes. The boy racer in everyone will enjoy the enthralling ride - equal to any racecam footage modern motorsport provides - the roar of a 60's Ferrari - to the enthusiast a sound now made mechanically impossible by noise regulations. While Lelouch desperate flinging of the car through Paris is a joy, half the fun is the reactions of pedestrians, animals and other vehicles as Lelouch thunders through.

Ok, Here is a bit of feedback The title is RENDEZ-VOUS, which means Meeting or Date, in that case it's more Date because at the end he meets a woman on the Sacre-coeur. I'm not sure it was made in a Ferrari, will check on this. About taxi....GET IT GET IT GET IT, Taxi 2 just got released in france, not as much fun as the first one (the surprise effect is gone) but still a very entertaining picture. TAXI 1 is out yet on DVD, probably not in english version though, you can probably get it at www.fnac.fr Good luck Lasse <[email hidden]> a crit dans le message : 8g1b0g$pf2$[email hidden]...

From watching the video, he seemed a very skilled rider and was very aware of the traffic all around him. The only problem comes when drivers do not see him coming and decide to change lanes while he is about to overtake them. He was going so much faster than the rest of the traffic that if for any reason he had to stop, there would be no chance and he would crash. Firstly, I didn't see (m?)any pedestrians on that road, and secondly, I suspect it would be quite difficult to manage to kill someone else in a car when you're riding a bike. Most likely thing that would happen to him would be rear ending a car because he couldn't loose enough speed in time. Did someone mention something about a Ferrari?? 8-)) Scott

WOW...I'm stunned. If I hadn't seen it I would have never believed someone would actually do this ! I've done years of high speed sport riding, which I've backed away from partly because I was feeling uncomfortable freaking out the citizens, but this guy takes that into another dimemsion. As cool as it is to watch, this kind of stunt hurts the entire sport riding community, and gives the people that would like to ban sport bikes alot of ammunition. On the other hand, if you can get away with riding like that in France then I'm moving there tomorrow. [email hidden] (Steven Dickson) wrote in <8g1tl0$hisr$1@fu -berlin.de>:

There is speed control on the roads in France. Only, cops are quite lazy (red wine makes you sleepy after lunch ;-)), and they just sit by the side of the roads, with their speed control equipment (radars and whatever...) and when they catch you speeding, you receive your speed ticket by mail a few days later! One (of the many) problem(s) of that system is that motorbikes don't have any license plate in the front (only in the back) and the speed cameras can't identify the bikers. Guys like Pascal (the crazy rider flying around Paris in 11 minutes) knew that and took advantage of it... But yes, in the end, it is very easy to drive fast on the french roads. Basically, apart from the occasional trafic helicopter (very noisy, very easy to spot) and speedtrap (position announced on national radio... I KID YE NOT!!!) you got nothing to worry about but people getting in your way. The official limit on motorways is 75mph, but usually everybody does at least 80. In the now 12 years since passing my licence I have only been "done" for speeding once. Ironically somewhere they changed the speedlimit and I didn't notice (I was well within the old limit). I am not particularly proud of it, but time is money and I usually drive as fast as weather and traffic conditions allow. Nothing as extreme as that guy tho' (besides, I drive a car). I occasionally get up to 90-95mph if I've got the road to myself (a very rare occasion over here). Yup, forgot to mention that the movie pretty much sucks overall. Emma Sjberg as a German cop, yeah right... :) I think the car scenes are very unrealistic, but somewhat entertaining. Scratch some, though. Like the scene where the bad guys's mercedes mysteriously flies perfectly horisontally onto an unfinished bridgesection... nggh /Magnus

Seeing someone do 100mph(in the US, anyway) is rare enough that it still surprises people. And a freeway is a more 'closed-in' version of a highway.
