Re: Mr. Gearan finally writes a rebuttal

Columnist's rebuttal on Adam Petty and an off-topic gun debate

Posters criticised John Gearan's follow-up column defending his attack on racing after Adam Petty's death, and noted that NASCAR sponsors were reportedly boycotting the paper. The thread drifted into which sports are worth watching and then into an off-topic debate on gun ownership and registration, which several asked to end.

you *do* need to start registering guns in the USA, although not necessarily for that particular reason. hey- you register your car, why not your personal implement of death? just out of curiosity, what is it about you gun lovers that makes you think you should be able to decide who lives and who dies? are you that omniscient? or have you not realized that life really isn't a schwarzzeneger movie, and vigilantes don't actually exist....despite what so many of you seem to think.... i think gearan's opinions are ridiculous; certainly not on the same level as the sensible notion of the registration of firearms. your comparison gives gearan far too much credit. "Some folks correctly pointed out that I know almost nothing about auto racing. My stock response is that I know enough: that it kills fine young men like Adam Petty far too often." Hoo boy. Does this guy just get dumber? I think the point that people were asserting was more about him being a blathering idiot. No sh&t the Petty family grieves. But hey - taking an unnecessary risk? Take the train next time, dumb ass. Far less risky that those death machines the hicks call "airplanes". (Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.. hey, wait, that's below the Mason-Dixon line too...) My biggest point (besides that this guy is an idiot) is that he's obviously paid to run off at the mouth about stuff he admittedly doesn't know much about.. Oh, I could go on. I won't. Before I thought maybe he has some personal reasons for the article. Or maybe he had a personal beef with the Petty's. Or had a friend killed in racing. Nope, I was wrong. His is just simply an ass. I'm thankful for the day the second car was built. That was the day the first car had something to race against. But as soon as I read it I saw where this thing would end up. :-) It's just that its been almost a week now since the accident and my wife and I are still thinking about it. She more so than me, I believe. She remembered some interviews with him that we've seen, and commented at the time on how nice and respectful Adam appeared for such a young man. We were driving just two days ago when out of nowhere she said "None of our children are going to participate in racing." Just like that. I had never even mentioned the idea before, so I know that she's been thinking about Adam's accident. On top of that, she started getting interested in CART just last year and so some of her first experiences with racing were the deaths of both Rodriguez and Moore. I'm a bit surprised that she's still watching after all this. Anyway, sorry for spilling it here. I know that I could just as easily have ignored this thread rather than start bitching about OT posts (which I'm off guilty of myself). Maybe I should have. Oh well.

You don't realize the mindset of many gun-toters here in the USA. Yes, to some, that is a *very real* opinion. And although I disagree heavily with it, it's also a very common opinion over here. :-( A guy I work with, last year he heard a noise in the middle of the night. He thought someone was breaking into his house through the basement. He lives in one of these fancy communities where jaywalking would make the headlines, so nothing bad happens there. Anyway, he gets out his gun & goes floor by floor, room by room clearing the place. Turns out a piece of aluminum siding came loose at the top of the house & was swaying in the breeze. He also has 2 girls. Lucky thing they weren't doing something bad like sneaking in a boyfriend, or even sneaking back in themselves after sneaking out for the night. (I did that one *many* times as a kid). It would call for discipline sure, but not a bullet in the head as would surely have happened had he actually encountered a person unexpectedly in, say, the basement. And that's how many tragedies can/do happen here in the US everyday..... I love David Buttery's line elsewhere in this thread...."So it's in the Constitution? I will say it one more time and then be done with it. I was talking about the logic of it that is all. I think Adolf Hitler put it best when he said we are now going to be the safest nation of the world since we now have all the guns registered. Also if you noticed thru Gearan article the sentiment is very close to the same for racing with nonracing or noncar people. They will go after racing when they have finished taking guns and cigarettes away from people. Hi David, I'm not so sure Prohibition was in the constitution. Anyway, if it weren't for Prohibition, we wouldn't have NASCAR.... :) Andrew David Buttery wrote: > So it's in > teh Constitution? So was Prohibition. >

I noticed he managed a mention on the NASCAR-oriented www.jayski.com and the sentiment was similar to what has been expressed here with the addition that all of the major sponsors and "players" involved with NASCAR are boycotting the paper with regards to advertising, press releases, interviews, etc. It was pretty gratifying to read... Sorry for contributing to this thing going off-topic as well. I'll try to steer it back on-topic if I can. You are absolutely correct that the same reasoning is being used, but there is one difference. When it gets to the point that, on average, 12 children a day die due to race cars, *then* it may be time to reassess it's legitimacy. Until then, it's not nearly in the same league as the gun issue. -- Chuck Kandler #70 K&S Racing http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/thepits/195 Competitor in the TopGear MGPRS2 league at: http://topgear.dhs.org/ Come on & join the fun! It was added in 1919- Prohibition was imposed by a Constitutional Amendment (the 18th) but was then repealed by the 21st Amendment. One might point out that the 2nd Amendment was written by the Founders in the "Bill of Rights" (1st ten amendments to the Constitution). The writings of the founders (a group of armed rebels) are quite clear that a free people must have the means to resist a tyrannical government. People forget that the ultimate purpose of the 2nd Amendment isn't for hunting or even for self defense. > Anyway, if it weren't for Prohibition, we wouldn't have NASCAR.... :) LOL! Yep.

Aha. You must be talking about the WWF Worldwide Whinging Federation. An hour in the sublime company of labotomised lard, vying for the title of chief motormouth, with a few minutes of steroid induced ham acting in the ring. Nope its that OTHER fine sport invented in Scotland, namely *Curling*. It is played *inside* a giant refrigerator so that the beer stays cold. This no doubt explains why the English are no good at it . :) David "Roger Walker" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:EpkV4.96$[email hidden]...

daxe, thought this might brighten your day. I didn't write it, just read is somewhere and copied it. So don't anyone email me if you don't agree with it. I know it's off topic, but so is this thread. Anyway, there's nothing wrong with a citizen from any country showing a little national pride. Slot TRIBUTE TO THE UNITED STATES This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing. America: The Good Neighbor. Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record: "This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States. When the franc was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it. When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped. The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans. I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the international lines except Russia fly American Planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technology, and you get radios. You talk about German technology, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technology, and you find men on the moon -not once, but several times - and safely home again. You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at . Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here. When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke. I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake. Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those." Stand proud, America!

I have lived in England all my life, thank you. I also happen to be a gun owner. I have NEVER even thought about using my guns for anything other than paper target and vermin shooting. Some idiot who should never have had an FAC went mad at Dunblane and so now all gun owners are branded as loonies, and legally held pistols have been taken away. I call *that* a quirky law. What pisses me of most is the fact that while I can no longer have my beautiful Walther P88 because of the anti-gun lobby, there are still plenty of illegally held firearms in the UK, and it's these which are used in the vast majority of gun-related crimes over here. Now, I believe this is rec.autos.simulators...
