High Gear website poll on whether r.a.s. is 'valid'

Kieran Larkin urged members to vote in a High Gear (simracingnews.com) poll asking whether rec.autos.simulators was a valid newsgroup. Many found the poll insulting and defended the group's helpfulness, and others accused High Gear of bias toward driving games. Webmaster Kenneth Verburg said the poll was replaced because of ballot stuffing.

And, as of 3:22 PST or so on May 22, the majority of those polled (41%) had no clue whatan "r.a.s." is. The next largest group (31%) feels the ng offers honest opinions and good info. Then things turn ugly. "Too much ego stroking and flaming" weighs in virtually equal to "If it's not GPL, they don't give it a chance" at about 11% each. Which tempts one to say it's a fair poll, but it's no GPL. <g> On Mon, 22 May 2000 21:40:29 +0100, "Kieran Larkin" <[email hidden]> wrote: >At high gear http://www.simracingnews.com/ they have a pole about r.a.s >being a valid newsgroup. I was a bit puzzled by this too, but there seems to be a lot of people who don't know about newsgroups. (Lucky them :) > The next largest group (31%) feels the ng offers honest opinions and > good info. I voted for this one, since I've yet to ask a question without getting a good answer, although some questions doesn't have an answer besides "Doesn't work" :( > Then things turn ugly. I think it's pretty rude for a sim racing news *website* to take a poll on whether or not a sim racing *newsgroup* is "valid". How would Kenneth like it if we took our own poll: Is High Gear valid sim racing news website? --David Cook In article <[email hidden]>, [email hidden] wrote...

Well what the hell would the people at www.simracingnews.com care for? I seriously doubt they could cause the NG to be removed. After all it is getting more posts than the flightsim NG... And that is what counts. The people at www.simracingnews.com seem like some type of nosy busy-bodies to me. -- [email hidden] Kieran Larkin <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8gc665$oeo$[email hidden]... > At high gear http://www.simracingnews.com/ they have a pole about r.a.s > being a valid newsgroup. Oh no! does this mean that we could be...invalidated ? Or maybe we were never really valid in the first place, and were a bastard news group. I'm so confused. Yeah, Of course those who haven't voted should go and overload the pole with as many votes as possible for "YES". Right? Wrong! Its a good source of info and it must be bloody annoying for the webmaster to have someone ruining an otherwise informative vote! Well, Ok, he'd like to know the votes as much as anyone but the are for the general racing sims publics information and are often quite informative about things. If they votes are ruined by people then its just pointless, a waste of the webmasters time and very misleading to viewers.
