Re: Can I run GPL on a TNT 1 ???

Can GPL run well on a TNT1 graphics card?

Barry Cuff could not get GPL running in 3D mode on a TNT card. One poster claimed GPL only worked on 3dfx and Rendition cards, but others said the OpenGL beta2 patch with a reduced mirror refresh rate gave good frame rates on TNT and TNT2 cards with a strong CPU. Dave Henrie questioned whether any of them reached a full 36fps in the cockpit.

There is some info in the README file that explains how to minimize the problem with flashing mirrors that occurs with the TNT cards. Don't believe Mr. Pants. The game runs OK with a TNT 1. Tim

GPL only runs with Rendition Verite (ancient) or 3dfx. The nvidia TNT performace is pure pants. On Tue, 23 May 2000 19:27:00 +1200, "Barry Cuff" <[email hidden]> wrote:

And how does its running on a TNT 2 help someone with a TNT 1? I have a TNT 1 and GPL runs so poorly as to be undrivable. (It currently sits safely on a shelf, awaiting the day when I feel moved to grapple once again with a 3dfx card.) My point was that the game was built for a different set of video protocols and that the Open GL patch is not all that impressive. Especially not when compared to the performance possible with games built from the ground up for D3D. On Tue, 23 May 2000 11:03:50 +0100, Kev <[email hidden]> wrote:

I have the same framerate in 1024x768 I use ASUS P2B P2@466 128 MB Ram ASUS TNT1 (!!) - overclocked ok, i had to reduce the mirror refresh rate, but is this really such a big problem? The game runs perfect on my machine. No use buying another videocard just for GPL

I seriously doubt I am doing anything wrong. It is my experience that the combination of a TNT 1 and a PII-300 is just not enough for GPL. (The CPU might be OK, but not with that video card.) So, I'll either wait until I have the horsepower to experience GPL as something other than a slideshow or I will spend my time enjoying all the more current motorsport alternatives that don't require quite so much brute force. Like, for example, NFS: PU. On Tue, 23 May 2000 18:36:42 GMT, "Karl Zosel" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Absolutely, just get the OpenGL Beta2 patch from www.papy.com and turn down the mirror refresh rate to every 3rd frame (see the readme file for the OpenGL patch to see how to do this).
Jay J 24 May 2000 01:15 UTC#268307
I would tend to agree, that a TNT1 isn't well suited to running GPL, at least not on a mid-range to poor system. I've got a PII 266, and when I attempted to run it with my STB Velocity 4400 16 meg AGP card, I could only get the chase view to work, and at that with graphics turned down to about 1/2 level, no mirrors or cockpit features whatsoever, and running with a full field of 19 cars I could only get around 15 fps in traffic. Running all alone I could get 26-30 fps, which for this challenging of a game just doesn't cut it. I added a Voodoo II 12 meg and volia! That did the trick, so unless your TNT1 is on a kick but system, like a PIII 700+ system, with no less than 128 meg of ram you'll be dissapointed.

Yes of course it was built for 3dfx cards but the openGL patch works fine. I was trying to save the guy some money. He can run GPL with the system he already has. There are plenty of folk who have nightmares with voodoo cards and GPL too judging by the number of posts in here. Kev

OK, so we've established that a TNT1 and TNT2 are different cards. And I did say that GPL only runs on Rendition and 3dfx cards. Maybe I should have said "only runs out of the box on Rendition and 3dfx cards." What kind of system does your friend have? I'll bet it's better than a PII-300. I think others here have stated that a TNT card is OK as long as you have lots and lots of CPU behind it.

I don't remember him saying what system he has. If he has a system like mine (TNT1. PII-300) he's not going to have much luck. Trying to save him some money is laudable. Even so, it's been my experience that there are some things one cannot do on the cheap. It might actually be less expensive, in terms of cost and time ("Once you've downloaded and applied the patch, you can begin editing the CORE.INI file....") to buy a low-end voodoo card rather than trying to fiddle a TNT into behaving itself, especially on a slower system. >There are plenty of folk who have nightmares with >voodoo cards and GPL too judging by the number of posts in here. No question! <g> Voodoo no longer seems like a mainstream card. And GPL seems more and more like a brilliant and finicky orphan. Keeping it going as systems and system standards continue to evolve feels a bit like keeping any rare vehicle roadworthy. For those who've come to love it, all the effort is amply rewarded. For those who've come to the party late, getting everything to work can be something of a challenge.

lets see what does the poster mean by "perfectly" here's the test, with the mirrors set to full on, no registry hacking, and running v1.2 of GPL can any TNT or GeWhiz card produce 36fps in the cockpit? If you mean he can run it perfectly at 25fps, then we have a disagreement. If you mean he can run it perfectly at 36fps from the Nintendo F10 ARCARD Tail Gunner view, then we again have a disagreement. If you mean after hacking the registry and limiting the mirror updates to every two or 4 or 8 frames, then once again, we have a disagreement. dave henrie
