try it with just one of the v2's.

Does more RAM help GPL on a new high-end PC?
Juice asked whether adding RAM to his new overclocked PIII with GeForce and Voodoo2 SLI would help GPL. Replies said 128MB was plenty, since GPL is CPU-limited, and Liutger Franzen reported that a GeForce with mirrors every second frame outperformed Voodoo2 SLI, pointing to an unofficial Glide patch. A claim that Windows 98 cannot use more than 128MB was disputed.
Automated summary.
Hi, just built a new computer consisting of: PIII550e o'clocked to 854 using
an IWILL VD133PL, GeForce DDR, 2 voodoo2's in sli ( for GPL), mx300 sound
card, and 128mb infineon 133mhz cas2 ram. I'm wondering what advantages
would another 128mb of ram would give me?
I've also heard about this Virtual Channel Ram. What is this, and is it
better than what I have now?
thanks in advance!!

1st off: I used to have V2-SLI on a celery-500 and when I got my
athlon-600 I also bought a GeForce DDR (elsa erazor x2): with the same
settings the geforce is slightly faster at 1024x768 in GPL on the athlon
than the V2-SLI. I turned down the mirrors to every 2nd frame and then
its a steady 36fps whereas the V2-SLI dropped at the start to 20-25 fps
and sometimes also during races. so, if you still got the V2-SLI from
your last machine: try it, but if you'd had to buy them for the new
machine: don't do it!
ok, extra ram was the question ;-)
you never have enough ram - ist just like harddisk space *sigh*
256 vs. 128 ram for GPL is an issue when you want to record big replays,
i.e. you set your replay-memorysize to something like 60-80 MB to be
able to record a full GP.

You said you tested V2 vs. GeForce with the same settings ... did you really
turned down the mirrors to every 2nd frame when testing with V2's??? Or vice
versa, full mirrors (incl. objects and textures) with GeForce?
In my experience, with full mirrors and full objects/textures on them,
nVidia cards come to a crawl whereas V2 (non-SLI) is still playable.
Similarily, turning down the mirrors with V2 to every 2nd frame really helps
in fps department, esp in 10x7 resolution.

I said same settings, i.e. 1024x768, mirrors every frame, all textures
except sky, no drivers arms, detail slider about 30% (I don't remember
which features disabled on the right side): GeForce was slightly faster,
but when I changed the mirrors to every 2nd frame, the GeForce was much
faster (there is a special glide.dll which does the mirror-trick for
voodoos).

what brings the GeForce down is detail-slider full way: nearly
unplayable (below 15fps). in my experience (and I tried both the GeForce
DDR and the V2-SLI in my athlon) it's not worth to keep a V2-SLI (and
have 2 PCI-slots less) for GPL: my setup now is faster, looks better and
I don't see a big difference in mirrors every 2nd frame.
important: it hast to be a GeForce DDR - a non-DDR might be
significantly slower!

you get it at the fastlane under patches (Unofficial GPL Banshee/3DFX

More replay space...and nothing else.
IMO GPL is not very dependent on RAM. 64 is plenty for it. Windows needs
more than GPL does =)

GPL runs exactly the same for me with 196 MB as it used to when I had 128
MB. You will only find a few games that want more than 128 MB, Flight Sim
2000 and Ultima 9 spring to mind.
What for is that in gpl one might find that there is no advantage to
sli. One might also find that sli is actually slower. As to your
asssertion that sli is twice as fast, NOS probably answered that
adequately. I doubt it is any faster in GPL. But I really dont care
if he tries it or not. It was just a suggestion.

196 megs? In the case of Ultima 9, that's 32 megs for the program and
another 164 megs to store all the bugs...

Did you know Origin mailed out to all registered users a completely
new install cd that contained all their bug fixes? I'm not saying it
"should" have been released in the state it was in, but at least they
made more effort than many companies to fix their mistakes. Of course I
have 'heard' that EA rushing U9 out the door was part of the reason Lord
British(Richard Garriot) left Origin.

It's more than that, it's a fact. I don't feel any sense of pity on him, he
clearly merits what happened to him. Im still mad that he didn't do
anything with his LB character, even after promising he would on UO.

what for? to have a spare PCI slot? one V2 has the disadvantage of just
800x600 and it's just half as fast as V2-SLI (the scalability really is
about 100%).

Really? I don't remembewr any benchmarks showing V2-SLI twice as fast
as a single V2.

The reason SLI isn't that much faster in GPL is because GPL isn't framerate
limited but CPU limited. IMO of course. Some people, after upgrading to SLI
from single-V2, reported slower frame rates. But that was ALWAYS cured by
disabling v-sync from Ctrl Panel. It seems that re-installing V2 drivers
after SLI upgrade enables v-sync.

I have no "texture corruption" problems with my V32000, but I could use an
extra fps or 2, would this patch help me? or should I leave it alone? I run
GPL on a Pll 400, V32000, 196 ram and get good framerates in 1024x768.

Thats a new one on me and probably for the tons of powerusers that
went to 256k as soon as pc100 memory came down in price.
I remember the Intel VX boards had a cache limit of 64k, they could
accept more, but it just bogged things down. However, I haven't heard
the 256k in windows before. You sure they weren't referring to win3x or
something?
