Could F1 drivers beat NASCAR drivers in stock cars?

David G Fisher posted Jeff Gordon's remark that he might beat Michael Schumacher in a stock car, reviving the NASCAR versus F1 debate. Posters argued over adaptability, citing Nigel Mansell's CART success and Niki Lauda's IROC struggles, and lamented that modern F1 drivers' contracts prevent them from racing elsewhere.

Probably just as fun to watch would be seeing some of these WC drivers trying to get in an F1 car, let alone drive it :-)
LOL No kidding! There are some 'petite' NASCAR drivers though. Mark Martin is a very small guy, although in extremely good physical condition. I don't think Jeff Gordon is a big guy either. (Hell, his voice hasn't even begun to change yet! <G>). Guys like Spencer, M. Waltrip, etc would not be good candidates. Like myself, who couldn't get into an open wheel car if they had a giant shoe horn and 100lbs of Crisco <VBG> -- Scott B. Husted ICQ #4395450 Editor in Chief PowerSims.com Pat R. This might get the NASCAR vs. F1 debate rolling again. :-) Fom USA Today: Gordon, incidentally, has become NASCAR's dominant road racer, winning the last five in a row. ''But,'' he says with a chuckle, ''that doesn't mean if you bring (Formula One star) Michael Schumacher over here and put him in a stock car, I could keep up with him.'' David G Fisher

Goy, Although I believe F1 drivers are at the top of the list of the most skilled road course racers in the world, Im not so sure they could jump in a Winston Cup Stock Car and beat the Gordon or some of the other good NASCAR Winston Cup road course drivers. Driving a WC Car around a road course is a HUGE difference than an F1 or any other type of open wheel car. That does not mean I am saying the WC guys are better road course racers. I'm just saying they are better at driving Winston Cup cars on road courses. <G> Scott PA-Scott PowerSims.com Goy Larsen <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Quitters are not allowed to voice their opinions, WIMP !!! :-))) The reason why F1 drivers are so good is because they can adapt to almost any car or track, that's why they are where they are today, that's not to say the MS (hate his guts) would beat *any* WC driver without any prior testing at any given track, but I bet it wouldn't take MS (hate his guts) too many laps to be right on pace, and probably well above it too.... But then again, even MS (hate his guts) is susceptible to driver preferences, and he could find it hard to get the car set up they way he wanted it, but having seen MS (hate his guts) at the Paris-Bercy (sp) kart races, I would be very surprised if that was the case Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "Team Mirage" http://www.teammirage.com/ "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ * Spam is for losers who can't get business any other way * "Spamkiller" http://www.spamkiller.com

Their time is very much taken up with developement, practise, public appearances, promotional outings, business meeting ,etc. They really don't have the extra time the heroes of old did to try other stuff. Also they generally have clauses in their driving contracts that prohibit them from taking part in other series. David

I don't know the IROC series, but isn't that much the same as Fixed setups in Nx, you're not allowed to change *anything* ? And by doing it like that, some guys will actually like the setup, and some will loathe it, in the Paris-Bercy (sp) kart races, everyone uses identical karts, but they are allowed some small mods to the karts to fine tune the handling a bit, tire pressures and such, but you're not allowed to change the chassis or engine, so if anyone could come up with something similar, and the IROC series might be the best starting point for something like this, I think it could be really great Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "Team Mirage" http://www.teammirage.com/ "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ * Spam is for losers who can't get business any other way * "Spamkiller" http://www.spamkiller.com

A few modern F1 drivers have (some before they reached F1, most after they left F1) such as J. Villeneuve, A. Zanardi, Mark Blundel, Christian Fittipaldi, Jan Magnusson, Nigel Mansell, ... I expect Juan Pablo Montoya to be in F1 by 2001/2. It would be interesting if a few tried it while they were in F1. It's just that most F1 drivers only drive one series at a time (hardly see any current drivers trying touring cars or Lemans). Probably a result of their contracts, amount of testing, setup work, and practice that goes on in any of these series. One word....MANSELL. he went oval racing (admitedly in a CART, but it was a very different car to a 92 F1) and kicked everyone's butt. > I'm just saying they are better at driving Winston Cup cars on roadcourses. from www.irocracing.com history section: "IROC began a new era in its history with the introduction of Dodge Daytonas as the vehicles of choice in 1990. The three-event series began with an outstanding race at Talladega Superspeedway, which saw Dale Earnhardt win despite 15 lead changes among five drivers. International road racer Martin Brundle, who impressed everyone with a fifth place at Talladega in his IROC and oval-track debut, came back to win Race 2 on the airport road course in Cleveland. He therefore became the first non-United States driver to lead the point standings going into an IROC finale. Brundle started on the pole at Michigan, but his chance of victory was over after he and Rusty Wallace touched during tight racing. Earnhardt took command on the first lap and fended off all challenges to claim his first IROC crown and $175,000." I watched the Cleveland race on TV and Brundle dominated this road race. The in-car camera showed his feet dancing over the brake pedal tapping as he used the brake to steer the stocker into the turns. I think F1 drivers can adapt to stock cars much easier than stock car drivers could adapt to an F1 car. It's a shame that IROC no longer provides anything close to an even chance for non-NASCAR drivers. Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

IROC used to stand for International Race of Champions. Now it stands for get out of Dale'Earnhardt's way while he's drafting. The cars are all identically prepared, waaaay back they used Porche 911's but now it is Pontiac Firebirds. (mini winston cup cars) They would run road courses and ovals so that both types of drivers stood a chance. Trouble was...the oval boys were awful on the road courses and the right turn racers could figure out the ovals fairly well. So the "drivers" had a-lot more sucess than the oval guys. Back then, Al Unser Sr. and Jr. did quite well, now it's Mark Martin or Dale E... dave henrie

Yes, of course, but we're talking 'bout how F1 drivers would do on ovals in NASCAR, not CART. Talking 'bout Mansell in CART is relavant as to the adaptability of F1 drivers to other racing series, but it doesn't prove anything here.
