Montoya wins the Indy 500 for CART team Ganassi
TRUSRS85 celebrated Juan Pablo Montoya's Indy 500 win for CART team Ganassi as a blow to the IRL. Posters debated Vasser's strategy, whether more CART teams would return, and whether the race had lost prestige since the split. Others explained the winner's milk tradition and how the track length is measured.

Exactly. I never used to miss a CART (Indycar) race. Now, I don't feel any
need to watch either CART or the IRL, and I doubt that I'm the only former
fan to feel this way. The 500 was the first US-based open wheel race I've
taken more than a brief look at this year. Haven't missed an F1 race,
though.
I agree with the sentiment that CART and IRL need to settle up and get back
together before they kill them both off. It's getting harder and harder to
avoid showing all those empty seats.

I think Chip's reasoning was that, with the chance of weather putting an end
to the race, leaving Jimmy out while bringing Juan in would leave a Target
cat in the lead if the rain did come. Jimmy then stays out until passed by
Juan or a yellow comes out. Either way, Team Ganassi is covered,
unfortunately for Jimmy, things just didn't fall his way this year.

Ezzaktly Bruce, this wasn't about politics, CART vs. IRL or any of that
other petty BS. This year's 500 was about the best team in American
motorsport purchasing off-the-rack cars and engines, running minimal
practice laps, qualifying fast enough to start towards the front and then
spanking the opposition at their own game. The Ganassi pit stops were
spectacular, truely a professional outfit. The rest of the IRL regulars had
better raise their game by next year, or more of them will find themselves
standing by the sidelines, as more CART teams "cherrypick" the 500.
Ganassi made it look so easy, maybe a European or Aussie team will give it a
go next year. Some of the F1 teams spend bundles on their F3000 teams, a
one-off run at Indy wouldn't hurt the budget too much.

Note quite. It's not the tracks that makes the race, it's the drivers who make
the race. The race is only as good as the drivers are. The Indy 500 is nothing
without the drivers. Imagine holding the Monaco GP with only F3000 cars and
drivers. For some reason that even has now lost the flaire it once had. That is
exactly what happened at Indy.

He dropped out of the top 5 I believe. This was due to some unique
fuel strategy by Target. I think basicly Jimmy took one for the team
and CART to help Montoya win.

**Used to be** the greatest. Tony George with his monumental ego has
destroyed it. And I say that as someone who has lived his whole life
within fifty miles of the track. I can quote all sorts of statistics
of the race from memory but since '95, it's become a joke -- a BAD
joke.
I only hope that the two sides of this ignorant dispute can settle
their issues and re-unite open wheel racing before both series die.
Funny, in separate interviews, BOTH Ganassi and Montoya said that winning
Indy was the BIGGEST thing they've ever done. Does that make Ganassi and
Montoya a bad joke as well?
Too bad CART's fans can't exhibit as much class as CART's teams, owners, and
drivers do.

The swig of milk is a legendary tradition at the Indy 500. The winner
of the race has sucked from the milk bottle for a very long time.

Now that's something I'd like to see, and not solely for the competition.
The IRL might just need a couple years worth of thrashings by outsiders in
order to get their act together. Either that, or the humiliation might
force them to cut a deal with CART and end this split. Hey, I can dream
can't I?
Course, TG might realize this and never allow it. But how many out there
are betting that we'll see a few more CART teams at Indy next year?
The man can't help his name Bruce, still, you've just got to laugh. Before
'95 they'd show the Indy500 live in cinema's here and you had to be
"connected" to get tickets (never got in myself), now, even if they did,
they wouldn't get anyone to watch it (I might have, to glee over watching
Ganassi walk the field).

Yep. The following information is from the Indy museum:
Milk jug
Another tradition that dates to Louis Meyer and the 1936 Indianapolis 500.
"He drank buttermilk because his mother told him that it would refresh him,"
Davidson says. "He was going to drink that no matter what [after the race],
and a [local] milk federation executive saw it and said, 'Hey, we can do
something with this.' " The chilled milk, now anonymous Grade A whole, is
presented in an old-fashioned glass quart bottle along with a greenery- and
flower-studded victor's wreath. "Rick Mears, who won four Indianapolis 500s,
has each one of his milk bottles mounted on plaques," Davidson says.

I can only think of a handful of CART drivers that I root for:
Michael Andretti
Adrian Fernandez
Dario Francatti
Paul Tracy
Kenny Brack
Max Papas
And... That's about it... And frankly I would even put Andretti on the list,
if he wasn't an American, he's a bigger whiner than Rusty Wallace for God's
sakes :-)
I for one enjoyed the 500, it had a lot of drama leading in.... The return
of Little Al, The two Gal's in the race, Chip's Champion and his other
driver ;-) And all the regular American names that the IRL has in it's
rouster.

When did Montoya say that? He struck me as singularly unmoved by the whole
thing. He wasn't exactly like those last-minute qualifiers (and bubble
burstees) a week back who were all choked up.

I think it is quite possible that both are at play. Sure, they are going to
tow the party line. And it is also worth lots of $ to act as if it is the
case. But I think it (the memory and tradition of Indy) are still fresh
enough that it does mean a heck of a lot to Ganassi and a lot of the team.
Certainly it will to Target (having nothing to do with racing and all to
sponsorship). Now Montoya, OTOH, probably considers it just another race and
(I'm really guessing) is quietly laughing. Then again, he might consider all
of our racing here a bit of a joke :-o

Considering that they have no experience racing or using that IRL
equipment and they simply showed up and kicked everyone's ass....
I would say they are correct. To me it just shows how good that
team really is. I expect Neuman Haas and Penske in the race
next year.

He was in the top 5 before those pitstops. When everyone went into the
pits he took the lead. And that was the problem. Everyone knew that
Montoya would pass him and he would have to pit anyway. I think he
was doing F1 type team orders and making it difficult for people to
pass to give Montoya a bigger advantage.

world racing the event, and I would also like to see the best from Nascar
and Sport. If Robby Gordon can do so well at the current 500, and then be a
back marker in NASCAR, I would think some of the more talented nascar people
(Including non Winston cup guys that road race at the WC road races) could
be much more competitive than many of the IRL guys at the least.
So:
Michael Schumacher - Juan Montoya - Mika Hakkanin
Greg Ray (Got Lucky :)) - Pedro De Le Rosa - Tony Stewert
Jacques Villeneuve - Jeff Gordon - Ralph Schumacher
making up the first 3 rows... that would be a tad bit more exciting than the
top 9 we really had. So If all the leagues could get together in the next 10
years and agree to take a few weeks off and really put together a race that
everyone could get excited about, then it would bring new fans and more
money for everyone, and I think that's something IRL\CART\FIA\NASCAR can all
agree with... money :)

No driver in the race considered the 500 a joke, lets be real. They
all wanted to win and they all new what winning the 500 would mean.
The 500 is certainly full of political problems, but it somehow seems
to rise above the petty bickering on race day. Of course, it
would/will even be better if all the politicking would go away.

Its still a neat race and well with Target Ganassi there it was better the
it has been in recent years. Juan demostrated he is a very versitle
driver, being able to pick up indy in nothing specail for a car since
everyone else had similar chassis not like when Hill won it in a Lotus.
Being able to come out run hard like he did in a car he probly will only
see again next May, hell I would be excited too. It would have been really
great if guys like Tracey Fanchitti, Deferren, Andtretti, were there. It
would have added to his win.
Dave
Course, TG might realize this and never allow it. But how many out there
are betting that we'll see a few more CART teams at Indy next year?

I watched the last 100 or so laps, it was on early morning Monday so I
was watching while I was getting ready for work, and can say without a
doubt, anyone who thinks racing around in cirles is boring should sit
down and watch a race or two. There is alot more below the surface of
just racing round in circles.
But out of curiosity, how is the track distance measured, i.e, is the
circumference measured from say the centre of the track or the inner edge
of the track (the white line)?

It may have been *ONE* of the world's great races, but hasn't been such

Once was I could name all 33 drivers in an Indy 500.....I haven't had the
slightest interest in doing so ever since somebody called 'Billy Boat' raced
in it! LOL!

I found it quite amusing that in the space of a number of hours, I
watched champagne being fizzed, tossed and drunk after a victory, then a
driver and his crew sipping on a glass of milk. ;)
Excellent tradition!
(and that's not cos I drink gobloads of milk...)

It's just that my Indy memories (from afar, of course......I've never been
there) relate to the period of greatest turmoil...the changing of the guard,
so-to-speak...from the early 1960's.
Brabham with the Cooper (1961), the gradual introduction of rear-engined
cars via the Lotus, Ford and Gurney influence (1963/64), Clark and his great
drive in 1964 and then the big win for Ford and Lotus (1965), Parnelli Jones
and the first STP turbine "Silent Sam" (1967), the wedge-shaped Lotii, first
with turbines and 4-wheel drive (1968), then the influx of
aerodynamics.......right up to the 1990's it was still an event I looked
forward to watching and reading about each year.
Then virtually overnight George blew it away.

You're probably right with that one unfortunately.
Let's not overlook the fact that any current F1 drivers would have a
snowball's chance in hell of driving at Indy. That's because of what their
contracts have to say about "extra-curricular activities".
There are also many F1 drivers who, given the chance, would NOT drive on an
oval due to their concern for the safety of such a configuration.

well like I said, this would be a long time coming and would need full
support of everyone involved. And if a few guys are concerned about ovals,
then there will be others that are not. I wouldn't expect to show up, but at
least some of the drivers that are somewhat good. :)
As for the contracts, I would assume the drivers would drive for their teams
at Indy.
