Best racing movies besides Grand Prix

Members nominated favourite racing films, including Le Mans, Cannonball Run, Gumball Rally, Monte Carlo or Bust and Bullitt, with joking mentions of Checkered Flag and Stroker Ace. Side discussion covered Steve McQueen's 1970 Sebring drive with Peter Revson and Mario Andretti taking over the leading team car.

The movie "LeMans" seems right up there with "Grand Prix". There seems to be more racing and less acting (don't get me wrong, I still think GP is an EXCELLENT movie). Nope anyone who has watched the Gumball Rally knows its a better movie about the CannonBall Rally. A Cobra and a Daytona doing full speed scenes in the mountains and in the LA river. All they did for CAnnon Ball was speed up the tape. While not a racing movie, "Bullitt" is worth seeing for what is probably the best movie car chase scene. Sure, its no "Grand Prix" or "LeMans", but its really worth a look if you haven't seen it.

McQueen did finish second in the, IIRC, 1970 Sebring 12 hour. Peter Revson did most of the driving as McQueen had a broken foot. The story I've heard is that Mario Andretti's Ferrari 512S broke down so he took over the highest placed team car and overtook Revson to win. He didn't want McQueen, an actor, to have bragging rights! Ashley McConnell wrote:

No, the best racing movie without doubt was Checkered Flag. The sense of speed is just amazing. How the camera man kept the camera steady whilst jogging along beside the cars is just amazing. A real professional in action. :)

Well Andretti was leading when his car went out. While he was getting ready to leave the Team manager offered him the car to drive. I would have beaten Revson anyway, but he was also a bit miffed that REvson was doing all the driving and McQueen was getting all the credit. On McQueen's best day he could not match Revson much less Andretti and he was still getting all the credit gimp leg and all. Andretti was running laps under the Qual pace with a car he had not driven before then and he was too small for since the regular drivers we taller then he was. All in all I have to agree with Mario that it was a truely great drive. Also Revson finished second, and McQueen just happened to have spent some time in the car the minimum to be listed as a driver of the car. The Movie is a great one and if you have not seen you should. Dave

Dave, if you're refering to "Those Magnificent Men and Their Flying Machines", ( a childhood favorite of mine), it predates "Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies" by four years. Once again, I'm afraid, we car people owe our debt of gratitude to the fly boys for inovation.

Hehe. Aint that the one where it starts with a car exploding in flames after running over a tumbleweed. The guy must have lost tons of downforce when that happened <G> MS

Hmmmmm...........I'm a bit late in this thread. Has anyone mentioned The Last american Hero? Based on Junior Johnson's story, though the character was called Junior Jackson in the movie. Can't remember it that well as it was about 16 years ago that I watched it. Actually can't remember if it was any good or not? For sure it was better than "Days of Boredom" Chris -- Citylab Durban www.citylab.com Tel:(+27 31) 309 2944 Faxl:(+27 31) 309 2933 Phillip Malphrus, Jr. <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:0zY_4.22$[email hidden]...
