Fantasy street circuit through Philadelphia

Andrew Turner posted a map of a dream road course through Philadelphia's Kelly Drive, Benjamin Franklin Parkway and City Hall. Locals discussed its length and politics, and others wished for track editors or GPS-based tools to build circuits from their own local roads, with the GP2 track editor and a hoped-for GP3 editor mentioned.

Hey everyone, especially those of you who know Philadelphia - http://www.voicenet.com/~turner4/Philadelphia/ Here is an image (sorry, a little big) of a road course I would love to see used for.... whatever. For those of you unfamiliar with Philadelphia, the section of the track North on Kelly Drive (parallel to the river), across the bridge, then south on West River Drive (across the river from Kelly Drive) has some interesting smaller curves and subtle elevation changes which aren't apparent on the map. Originally I thought Formula 1, but it really would lend itself well to different types of road racing. Also, I have a few variations, some of which pass directly in front of the Art Museum. This, my friends - *this* is why I wish there were track editors available! Well, there's some wishful thinking. Andrew

That is, Northbound at the intersection of 22nd and Benjamin Franklin Parkway.. Sorry! Andrew

Uhhhh, isn't that one road a big highway? I'm pretty sure that's the highway we use to come into Philadelphia from here, Reading. Thanks, Akex Turner wrote:

I can't believe this. :-) I have had the same thoughts too. Same areas of the city. Most of the same streets actually. Wouldn't it be awesome to have F1 or CART cars whipping around City Hall, and especially up the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to the Art Museum and through the park? You've even included the Independence Hall area. Excellent. Maybe you'd like to work on a track for GP3 together. We can show it to the mayor and maybe get the ball rolling to bring a CART race here someday. :-) Actually, it's not that bad an idea. 3/4 of a million come out to see the bike race each year (last weekend). I'm sure the city would go crazy for an F1 or CART race. David G Fisher "Turner" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Hey guys, Just make sure it doesn't get near the China zone <VBG> For those not familiar - that is NOT a racist remark of any kind. Its just a big bickering argument between the mayor and various groups over the location of the new sports stadiums. Scott PA-Scott PowerSims.com

Actually, you know something, this COULD work. Why? John Street is very open to suggestions. Ed Rendell was a great guy, I'll always have liked him, but he never suggested bringing the X-Games to Philadelphia like Street did. From what I hear, John Street is more towards making Philadelphia a more, how do I put it nicely....maybe hollywood-ized town. A F1 race would definately rock. DEFINATELY. I honestly believe that an email or letter sent to him would garner a reply by him...be it positive or negative... I love my city :) The steps on the Art Museum is basically a grandstand already :) Ryan Murray

Hi Uncle F., I'm not sure how long the course would be - I'll have to drive it to find out, or scale and estimate it-- probably about 4.5 miles or so... Anybody from here want to estimate? Thanks for pointing out the link below - I've never heard of it. Looks good. regards, Andrew Uncle Fester wrote:

Hey David, Is there supposed to be an editor for GP3? The track itself would be, I guess, fairly straighforward.. the topography would be tricky, and Center City? Ouch! That would be tough. This is why I wish some of the companies developing new racing sims would have a "what is your fantasy course?" contest, where you could propose something like this and the software company would foot the bill to include it in the sim if you won! Yeah, I've fantasized about an F1 race here for quite some time now.. the course, I'm sure, would change a little.. regards! Andrew David G Fisher wrote:

Hey Ryan, Yeah, seriously. Of course, we're race fans, but could you imagine the presige this would bring to this city? (Can I say that? I live in Jersey now) Can you imaging the $$ it would bring here? And it would certainly prod the local government on to continue its city renovation projects.... I can see the international coverage on tv.. Should we? Andrew Ryan Murray wrote:

I've also had this fantasy :) I actually have a couple paper drawings of courses i would like to drive (mostly combining really cool sections of public road). No courses that could actually exist cause I do the virutal "cut & paste" of road sections together. But still...I have some ideas that would really rock. Chris

If Sam Katz was mayor it would happen. Damn Street had on a negative ad for Sam Katz that he doesn't care about the people of the city because HE WAS PLANNING TO BUILD A RACE TRACK! (then they showed Porsches and stuff going through a corner at some other track) I couldn't believe he said that, that just made me want to vote for him. But now, Street had to be elected, so no race track :( Looks like it's back to Nazereth. Thanks, Alex David G Fisher wrote:

I think it's really more like 15-20 miles. This thing is at least as long as the bike-race course, which I think is 14 miles around. Unless I'm wrong. I think the section on the river drives between the art museum and the Falls bridge would be sufficient for a good course. Turner wrote in message <[email hidden]>...
