GP3 wet-weather screenshots impress

New GP3 rain screenshots on Avault drew widespread praise for their reflections, puddles and dry line, with one poster who had seen it running saying the effect looked even better in motion. Sebastien Tixier, a PlayStation developer, admired the effects, and others discussed unfiltered tree textures, missing rain lights and whether PCs would cope. It was noted that GP3 was based on the 1998 season.

Look carefully at that 'on the grid' shot and you can make out the reflections of the pit complex and the grandstands. I don't really think these static shots can do justice to this reflection effect. I reckon it'll look much better in motion. I'm a Game developper on PSX, AI and special effects on VR2 and NFS5. So, i'm a bit jealous of PC developpers who have so much power for their special effects !!! :o( But with the PS2 i'm now happy as if i beat my 1:28 GPL lap reccords :) Aniway, screenshots look great , i'm really impatient to see it in motion. Projected tree shadow on Rally Racing Simulation from Ubi Soft is impressive too. Seb Harjan Brand wrote:

A lot of Rally Championship textures were left in their "raw" state, I believe, as the developers found it looked better. I noticed that too, and there were even more raw textures on the previous shots. As you noticed, they are kept mostly for trees, simply because the leaves seem much more realistic looking than when bilinearly filtered. Otherwise you would see the trees gently going from solid to transparent at the edges, giving them a rather strange appearance. On modern 3D cards bilinear filtering really doesn't have any substantial performance effect. -Gregor
