486SX25 ? That's a screamer too! I remember when my friend went from his
386/33 to a 486/50. It was the absolute hottest thing we'd ever seen. We were
playing racing games at an astonishing 12-15 fps !! We finally had "perfect
smoothness!"

Running GPL on a Pentium 60 at 3 fps
J. Todd Wasson reported running GPL on a Pentium 60 without 3D acceleration at about 2 to 3 frames per second and still lapping Monza in the 1:30s. Others were amazed, shared nostalgia about old PCs and urged him to upgrade to a Celeron and Voodoo2. He later improved to a 1:33.6.

Well, it was probably about 3 fps from the chase cam. :-)
P.S. Anybody want to buy a Pentium 60 Mhz screamer? Great for racing sims!

What you really need to play GPL: CPU in 400-something range (Celerons work
quite well), 64MB RAM, and a Voodoo2. That's all you really need (that's
all I've got! =) but considering how cheap stuff is now I would get a Celery
in the 500-something range, a good mobo, good RAM, and o/c the ***out of
it!! (Best bet might be to look into the Celeries based off of the PIII
core...)

Buy a new system at once, I don't know if you used a steeringwheel or
not, but 1:39 at Monza with 3 FPS shows you have great talent that
must not be wasted. 1:45 at monaco isn't bad either.

Seriously, I am amazed that you are able to run it that good at all. Did
you turn all the graphics options to the minimum already? It shows that

Hi, Todd --
Well, Todd, you certainly get the GPL Optimist Award for the month. With a
frame rate that low, it must be like driving with sunglasses, mittens and
lumberjack boots. Hope you're able to upgrade hardware soon. An amazing
world awaits.
Regards,
Kurt
That's remain the first time i've played "4D sports driving" on a PC1512, about
1fps, with no opponent, quite difficult to stay on road and it was with keyboard,
and about 20 secondes per frame with an opponent :o)
What a shock when 2 month after i've got my new brand PC 486SX 25 !!!!

IBM PCjr when I was
a kid. It was a HUGE step above my TRS-80. This thing had a 4.88 Mhz
processor and I think 128Kb of ram. We bought an accelerator card for about
$150-200 that upped it to about 8Mhz. Was incredible how much faster that was!
For only $150-200 more, we got a big cartridge that you plugged into the side,
to upgrade the ram to 640Kb. Unheard of!! Nobody needed that much memory!
I remember laughing at my friend's suggestion that I get something called a
"hard disk drive". What for? My games were on only one or two disks! You'd
pay another $150-200 just so you don't have to swap disks now and then? lol
The TRS-80 was great too. It had just over 1Mhz of processing power and 4 Kb
of Ram. The big upgrade was a cassette tape drive. This way, you could save
your Basic programs. :-)
Fond computer memories,

You serious!!!! I downloaded the demo of GPL with a P120 and an 8mb V2 card
and I got .5fps a second! :) Viper Racing ran at the highest of any game, 17
fps :)
Yeah, you eventually get used to it, I did 12 minutes in the RC2K demo when
it came out running it at 1.5fps a sec :) When you revved up the car, you
could here it go to 9,000RPM in 3 different pitches. (vrom Vrom VROM)
Lol, good luck, once you upgrade your computer, you'll have even more fun,
and good job on the 1:39 at Monza, that's what I ran when I started in
December and I got 36 fps!
Thanks,

Yep, in 95 we paid 2,000 for my old P120, thought it was awesome, it also
had 16mb of RAM! :) In fact, it was so fast, I couldn't even run Test Drive:
The Duel (was that the one) :) But I was a bit dissapointed how GP2 ran,
then it ran as smooth as silk on my friends 233 MMX when it came out :)

I really don't think you CAN attach a file to a newsgroup message in AOL. You
can do it it an e-mail, though. When I uploaded something to the binary group,
I had to use Netscape... If you have netscape, try that..
