I had the same problem when I switched from an AWE 64 to an SB live.

Just swapped out my old Monster Sound original for a new diamond MX400. The
sound of the new card is definitly an improvement but it seems that the
gameport is a step back. The old Monster had a digital gameport that was far
less "twitchy" ,as seen in DXTweak, than the new cards 'port. Are the
Soundblaster X-gamer ports considered to be any good or at least on a par
with the original Monsters? Can anyone recommend some good sites to read up
on this?
