First impressions of GPL's Direct3D patch

Users praised the new GPL Direct3D rasterizer, reporting solid 36 fps at high resolutions on GeForce cards and better mirrors. Voodoo owners posted Glide versus D3D frame-rate comparisons, with mixed but generally favourable results, and one needed a core.ini setting to make it work on a Voodoo 5.

very very pretty. it looks good on my voodoo5 which i only got for gpl. at least 2x and 4x aa work no in d3d. 1028x1024x2aa looks pretty good as does 1024x768x4 but need to kick down the detail slider a bit. I gotta check this out on a geforce2. In article <8j0r62$q3b$[email hidden]>, [email hidden] wrote:

I had to set TossHighestMip = 1 for it to work on my V5, but it does run and look great with 4X FSAA. <[email hidden]> wrote > very very pretty. it looks good on my voodoo5 which i only got forgpl. > at least 2x and 4x aa work no in d3d. 1028x1024x2aa looks prettygood > as does 1024x768x4 but need to kick down the detail slider a bit. Just curious if anyone tried it with a Voodoo 3. It's says the card is known to work but I'm just wondering if it looks any better then 3dfx. Jim D. Per Bostrm wrote in message ...

And in comparison to Glide there is only a very small fps-hit at the start of a race. I tested with 1024x768, full eye-candy, detail slider full to the right, race start with 19 AI at Monaco from the last stall, doing nothing but staring at the frame counter ;). Framerates read as follows: Lowest integer until flag drops/Lowest integer during AI in sight/Highest integer before beeing dropped from the race. With Glide I get: 22/30/36 With D3D I get: 17/28/36 I'm thinking about a change ;)). Oh well, here's my system specs: Athlon 600 on Asus K7M, 128 MB SDRAM, V3-3000, SB Live! and some other stuff. Nothing oc'd. HTH! Regards Crash

I don't think it is what "graphic" card so much as what CPU speed...IMO <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8j0r62$q3b$[email hidden]...

I actually found things better with D3D than Glide with my V3 2000 using the latest full drivers from 3dfx. I got an improved framerate and a problem which I had been having since connecting a Force RS with framerate jitter seems to be gone with D3D. I can set the detail bias quite a bit further to the right with no loss of framerate. The mirrors are better too. The only difference I can detect is that there seems to be a bit more mip mapping going on. Anyway, give it a try. You can always go abck to Glide if you don't like it. Cheers Phil

Hey Eric! I'm *sure* you need a couple of drivers to test out your racing LAN setup... You can practice passing backmarkers, anyway...<g> Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett GPL hcp. +77.11 Never argue with an idiot.
