GPL frame rate on my PC stinks, i have no idea why?

Yes i run it with all the textures on,but thats not the part thats confusing me. Let me explain. I run GPL in 640*480. everything turned on. I get a frame rate of 19 fps MAX. most of the time it sits around 14-15. My system spec is as follows AMD K6-2 550 64 MB ATI Rage Fury Maxx graphics card 20 GB hard-disk(split into 2 10GB drives) 32 speed CD Drive 192 MB RAM(DIMMS) I am currently running GPL using the OpenGL patch. I tried installing the D3D patch but all i got was a flickering screen and the frame rate drop to 9fps!!. Also if i start GPL with windows in 800*600, when i go to the player menu screen the game hangs. If i start it 640*480 there is no cursor, i have to press Ctrl,Alt,Del, bring up the task list then click cancel and then cursor appears. No hangups whilst running the game, just the cruddy frame rate. I've heard of this aleged conflict between AMD K6-2's and ATI cards but have not had any problems with any other games/apps. I know that performance on a K6-2 will be slower than an Intel chip but not this slow!! I am totaly at a loss as to what to do now, has anyone had similer problems? if so how did you fix them?
