Under 9:00 at the Ring...*so* close...

Eldred's struggle to break nine minutes at the Ring

Eldred reported a string of laps just over nine minutes at the Nurburgring. Others encouraged him, suggested trying a different car and urged him to slow slightly to eliminate spins. Peter Ives proposed a car-allocation handicap for leagues, which Don Scurlock said would not help much since driver differences outweigh car differences.

ARGH! I've probably run about 30-40 laps this weekend at the Ring. I just finished a 5-lap block. My times were:9:00.60, 9:14.52, 9:01.36, 9:14.35, 9:11.03. I just CAN'T seem to break the 'barrier'. I honestly thought my last lap was good - I had 3 quick spins in the 9:01 lap, and just one in the last one.<sigh...> Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett GPL hcp. +70.45 Never argue with an idiot. I was stuck in the 9:0x bracket for a while too. Eventually, I gave up with the Lotus and switched to the Ferrari. Result - 8:58! -- David. Whatcha drivin Eldred?? I switched to the sLotus from the Ferrari and went from 9:18 to a 8:52. BTW- I used to have a press pass for Tiger Stadium back in 82-84. Hehe...I'm not even THAT good. In my league races, and my other VROC races, I usually end up running around by myself. I see other cars only when the leaders come up to lap me. Wow! You've got to believe that sub 9 is in your near future; just a week ago you were wondering how you managed a 9:16 lap and those lap five laps were all under that. You're almost there and you still having a few spins. You must have really picked up the pace in some (if not all of the sections). I'm not sure if this would work, but I've thought of a way of making league racing more even. What each player needs to do is list the order of preference for the cars according to how quick they are/reckon they could be in them. So in my case it would be something like: Lotus Eagle Ferrari Brabham Coventry/Cooper Murasama/Honda BRM Each driver is then allowed to start the season in their favourite chassis but, depending on the race results, the car they have to drive next time around will change in the following way. 1st or 2nd - drop 3 marques 3rd or 4th - drop 2 marques 5th or 6th - drop 1 marque Outside the top 6 then move up a marque So, if I were to finish in the top 6 in the Lotus then in the next race I would drive either the Eagle, Ferrari or Brabham. Let's say I finished 3rd so that in the next race I am in the Ferrari for the 2nd race. If I now finish 3rd again in this race then I would drop 2 further marques down to the Coventry/Cooper. If, however I finished outside the top 6 in the 2nd race then I would move back up 1 marque to the Eagle. Get the idea? Perhaps, in this way, there could be league races where everyone could be competitive. It would take more paperwork, but perhaps it could work? -- Peter Ives - (AKA Ivington) No person's opinions can be said to be more correct than another's, because each is the sole judge of his or her own experience.

There's certainly logic to it Peter, and a similar system is used in real racing today where if you win you get weight added for the next race to slow you down. But in gpl the difference between cars is small compared to the difference between drivers. In my league the fastest guys last year were all put in BRM's for this year, and they are still way faster than most. It helps some, but not enough to even the field. Mmm, now I'm confused. Did I send the same post more than once? I'm not really sure. Oh well, who cares. :) -- Peter Ives - (AKA Ivington) No person's opinions can be said to be more correct than another's, because each is the sole judge of his or her own experience.

If I could do consistent 9:30's or so at the moment I would be happy ;O) Haven't run too many laps at the Ring and have only managed a best of 9:38.14 so far. Need to get it down below the 9 min mark to get my ranking below the +100.. Oi!!! stop sniggering.. it's not that bad... The Euro 2000 Championships have took up a lot of my GPL time of late so I am hoping to get a good few laps under my belt over the next couple of nights as I am away for the weekend and will be suffering GPL withdrawal symptons... If I can get anywhere close to +100 by then I will be a happy man. I'm down to 53 something, but I just can't seem to get that push over the edge...What speed should I be doing the Kink at Spa, for example, and how on earth do you do 1.25 at Silverstone? -- Colin Harris ColinHarris in N3/NL & VROC Remove "your knickers" to reply > If I can get anywhere close to +100 by then I will be a happy man. > > Peter Hooper
