Returning to a pirated GPL copy

nixx admitted he had a pirated copy of GPL and asked about Voodoo 3 problems and patching. Posters pointed out that the game cost only about $10 to $15 and that the patches would not work on the warez version, and nixx said he would buy it. Michael Young argued that GPL was the only serious sim for driving, prompting some debate about other titles.

Should I use my precious little time I > have to try and master this beast? If you're serious about driving and racing, GPL is the *only* sim available. I read the reviews and previews of newer titles the same as everyone here. And then I stand in the aisles in the local Best Buy, having just decided that "Yes, it's worth a look", I put it back, wondering what it is I'm hoping to find that I don't find in GPL. Am I looking for eye candy? Faster lap times? More satisfaction from mastering an arcane skill? A more "complete" experience? Or am I buying simply out of habit? What would it mean to me if I were to find myself at the top of the F1-2k league some evening? I'd feel cheated, definitely, because I know my standing on the GPL heap doesn't warrant that. At $20, the title is a phenomenal bargain. At a very conservative guess of 200, that works out to 10 per hour. Worth every penny, I would dare say. Michael.

Normally you can't patch a warez version to 1.2 but anyway you would have to do this, i think a lot of problems are solved in the 1.2 version, to heck the version you have look at the bottom, but in theory you sgould be able to run a 3dfx version with V3 > > 2. Can I run it online with a cable modem? Yes it's hard to set but that should be okay, you have to get VROC to play it online > > 3. Yes because F12K sucks and GPL is a very good training for ALL car sims, if you are good in GPl you'll be good everywhere, it's like driving a real car, brake late, turn in while braking.... > > 4. If I buy it, where should I start (point me to a web site)? Anywhere online if you are in the US you should be able to get it for about 15$, in the UK maybe for 12-15
yeah, I love the copy protection schemes of F1GP and ICR1 too ;)) cheers, Alex

Ok, I confess. I got the warez version of GPL ages ago and never really played with it. After watching this group for a while now, I had the itch to try it again. My questions are now: 1. Before, I could run it fine with a V2. Now, with the V3, It wouldn't run at all except in software mode. The GL driver wouldnt work, and I (naturally) couldn't upgrade with the patch. The D3D driver works ok now (I can run it at 1600 alone). Will I have that problem if I buy it? Can I get a full screen with those high resolutions? 2. Can I run it online with a cable modem? 3. With GP3 coming out, and struggling to get faster with F12K, is it even worth bothering with? Should I use my precious little time I have to try and master this beast? 4. If I buy it, where should I start (point me to a web site)?

It doesn't to me, not that this should diminish your enjoyment of your standing there. I draw the comparison because I don't expect F12k challenge your driving skills as much as GPL does. I could be wrong of course; I have yet to see even a playable demo. The question I pose is: do you expect F12k to match your GPL experience? Michael.

I don't know. I don't have it yet. From what people are saying, my machine might not even run it smoothly. Since there's no demo to test it, I'm waiting until either:1)I get a new system, or 2) The price drops considerably. Thanks for all your input. I don't have any doubt that GPL is a great game, and I have no intention of spending any time fooling with the warez version. If I like it, I buy it. I hope nobody got the wrong impression about that. I got that warez version a long time ago, before I started racing. I guess my main intent here was to make sure I could actually run it properly before buying it. I never did see anyone comment if I could run it full screen (i.e., not that letterbox thing) at 1600. The game runs comfortably at that res for me with the D3D driver, but should I be trying to make the Glide patch work? I don't see how it could look any better. BTW, the V3 works properly, and has no resident V2 drivers lurking around. This experimentation has all taken place with a new install of Bill's finest and the newest V3 drivers. As for all the F12K bashing, well, that's a matter of personal opinion. I rather like the game, although I know the tracks aren't accurate, the physics suck, etc. I originally only got it because it had Indy, but after massive patching, found it to be ok. Of course, this whole argument will be moot after GP3 (or at least we all hope). So, now I'm off to buy GPL!
