Solitude circuit for GPL in development

Andre Warringa spotted screenshots of a GPL conversion of Germany's Solitude circuit by Martijn Keizer, a known GP2 track editor. Fans were excited, though Bruce Kennewell and others felt the road looked too wide compared with photos, and Martijn said release was expected soon. Posters asked how he had built it without a public track editor.

My first thought was, YAY, Solitude! That was on my personal wish-list of new tracks for GPL. > After viewing all the images, and then looking at the pix in theMotorSport > article, the first thing that struck was the fact that the width of the > track has been drawn much greater than in real life; it's almost the width > of a 4-lane highway! It looked much too wide on gplss11.jpg, but the road looked the right width along the river... so I'm not making my mind up yet. It might be the best track ever for GPL if it's done well. And yes, better than the 'Ring. -Laurens de Jong, The Netherlands.

The strange thing is, the track has the same width all along the track. So all screenshots are with a trackwidth set to 11 metres. And I agree it looks very wide on that screenshot, but I can assure you, you need all the tarmac there is :-) Screenshots can do funny stuff, as can be concluded from the fact that the width looks very different on the pics. Gplss10 is taken at the same spot as Gplss11, and I'd rather suggest taking the incar/f10 shots as guideline than the external camera's (with detial settings, different carshapes etc). You think it looks too wide there as well? Ofcourse the main objective of making a track, is making something that people enjoy racing on. So "fun" (playablity) is in some cases something that has to be set against historical accuracy. No point making a track that is soo difficult it's barely driven on VROC. Thanks for your encouragement and critical notes, I'll take it into consideration. If you have more comments please express them (in a way that's constructivly usable). Very cool looking, and at around 7 miles per lap it should be a workout. Hmm, I wonder if it will be possible to flip over the guardrail and land in the water? <vbg> -- See ya in the pits, Deano I have a terrible memory. Hello, I am living close to Stuttgart and I drove that road several times (not under race conditions, of course). It is a real narrow 2-lane highway (maybe 8 to 11 meters wide) and today it is used as a normal highway to connect Stuttgart and a little village called Leonberg. When I'm driving that highway with my father, I have always to listen his old stories when he was there at the Solitude with his motorbike watching the races on sundays. If that track is done well, it will be one of the most challenging tracks for GPL and it will be a real nightmare to overtake, because it is a REAL narrow track. I can't wait to check out the track under race conditions. Regards Gunther

Yeah, what we also need is for someone to write a patch that has the add on tracks in the 'best laps' section. Kev Tim Vanhee wrote:

The Solitude circuit was the subject of an article in a fairly recent edition of MotorSport. If the chap doing the creative work does an accurate job in replicating the sweeping bends and numerous corners this will be as challenging to drive properly as the Nurburgring. -- Regards, Bruce Kennewell, Canberra, Australia. --------------------------- Morgan V. After viewing all the images, and then looking at the pix in the MotorSport article, the first thing that struck was the fact that the width of the track has been drawn much greater than in real life; it's almost the width of a 4-lane highway! Don't take my comment the wrong way, please! I know that exterior shots in GPL replays always make the cars look small and/or the track wide. I'd really like to believe that, from the driver's view, the road is as it should be. Whichever way it ends up.....done properly this will be a lovely circuit to add to GPL. -- Regards, Bruce Kennewell, Canberra, Australia. --------------------------- Remco Moedt <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > > > Nono Bruce, you don't understand! Thanks for the response, Martin. I agree (and have commented just now in another post) that the external shots tend to "warp" the actual width. Bruce, you could've claimed you were looking for the IJ-diphtong on your keyboard, didn't find it and went with "Martin" for this reason. But then you'd have started the well-known but off-topic thread of whether or not the Dutch IJ is a letter, a diphtong, or simply two letters. Or (*looks at newsgroup members*) maybe not. -Laurens de Jong, The Netherlands. ----------------------------------------------------------- Got questions? Get answers over the phone at Keen.com.
