railriding; it`s not a fair time, and surely not representative of my skills
(low 1:30`s is the best I can get there).
BTW, if anyone knows how to get rid of that particular time for that track,
please tell me how. I`ve tried to delete that particular record, and, sure
enough, it disappears from the Best Laps screen, but the record on the track
still satnds, it doesn`t disappear. I would like to know 2 things:
1-Will the track record affect the data for GPLRank, or does it uses only the
Best Laps info?
2-If it does affect the data, how can I get rid of it?

Is cheating a problem on GPLRank?
Posters discussed whether GPLRank times could be faked by editing player.ini. Most argued the GPL community was honest, that cheating would only fool yourself, and that a GPLRank moderator could spot unlikely times. Tips were given for removing unfair laps such as rail-riding times.

I'm very big on offline tournaments, but these people are arguing the
possibility of cheating as a reason not to participate in them.
Since GPLRank depends on uploading an easily editable textfile with your
times, is cheating a problem there? I realize this is an insulting question
but I am curious.

We just go by pure sportsmanship. A very, very big majority of GPL drivers
are Gentlemen, so we trust each other. There is just no need to cheat to
99.999999% of the people.
This is not N3 with punks, lamers and kids who need attention.

Gpl community is 99% Gentelmans about 18-60 yeras old most of 25+ ( not like
NFS 12-16 )
So noone here wants to cheat other Gentelmans. Besides it would be cheating
yourself cause Gpl Rank is to check how fast you are also for yourself.

I realize this is an insultingAs a gpl rank moderator I must say its fairly easy to spot "unlikely"
times. Most of these are caused by warps or clock smashes. As has been said
before the gpl community is VERY fair and I cant really see anyone
manufacturing a whole set(and thats what they'd have to do) of times in
there player.ini. If this did happen I think we'd pick up on it quite
quickly..

I would think that if you have deleted the time from your player.ini
file it will not affect your GPL Rank handicap, since the trackrecord
is located somewhere else.

Best laps are in your player.ini; look at the file; 2 numbers are
used; the time (in seconds) when the record was done, and the 2nd is
the time in seconds.
The track records are stored in the track directories
(tracks\zandvort\record.ini). You can 'up' the time quite a bit, then
set a regular time, or delete the file or line altogether.
These files never make it to GPLRank, so have no influence on the
rank.

To be honest, yes people could cheat in GPLRank. But as far as I know
it doesn't happen, for several reasons:
1) Grand Prix Legends being (regrettably) the minority interest it is,
a lot of its players are familiar with each other's standard (eg
through this very NG). If my handicap suddenly jumped up by 50 points,
I don't think it would be long before someone queried it.
2) GPLRank has moderators. They scan through times, and would notice if
anyone posted a vast jump (eg 9:00 to 7:55 at the Ring). They could
then email the person in question to get an answer. Which is one reason
why I always keep a replay file of my best lap at each track.
3) GPL, not being a short-attention-span, pick-up-and-play arcade game,
isn't played (to any significant degree, anyway) by the sort of
attention-seeking obnoxious 12-year-old who is likely to cheat.
Apologies to all genuine 12-year-old GPL drivers (I know there are
some). I'm talking about the sort of people who post messagez with lotz
of wordz ending in zedz and use things like " way2g0 d00d" or
"14m3r l33t" and actually think people will care...
4) This sounds trite, I know, but the main protection against cheating
is the honour of the players. I mean, during the course of a
particularly frantic Novice race at Monza, I did a lap where I bounced
off most of the barriers, and ended up with a 1:27-something. But
that's nearly 2 seconds beyond my real capability (1:29 dead), so I
couldn't have justified posting it. Instead, I restored my player.ini
to what it was, and felt much happier. There's no satisfaction in
winning by cheating - I'd love to have a negative handicap, but only if
I can do it properly.

Well said David, I completely agree with your sentiments. The main thing
about GPLRank for many is a personal crusade, it's not about being number 1,
so why cheat ourselves. BTW, I notice your handicap has decreased recently,
well done!

Hehe, wait till I tell Squiffy about that one. Navy guys? Damn fine
bunch of chaps if you ask me. Real men through and through. So I'd
rather you refrained from that Commie type of thinking around here.
Taking whoever wrote that song and putting them before a firing squad
