Re: GP3 hype?

Is GP3 overhyped?

A poster quoted E3 visitors who called the GP3 demo 'GP2.5', and others predicted disappointment. Simon Brown and others defended Geoff Crammond's track record back to Revs and The Sentinel while doubting it would match GPL's physics. Stephen Ferguson noted that some players had tired of GPL and enjoyed NFS Porsche.

Well - extract from someone at E3-2000!! (calling himself F1filter - from simracingnews.com) "Biggest Disappointment - Grand Prix 3. Everyone I asked about the GP3 demo said the same thing. "GP2.5" Also, their sit-down demo was off-line on the last day of the show. Due to controller problems. I was also unable to conduct an interview with Nick Court, who was visibly upset with the problems happening on Saturday. By the time it was all over. Two of the 5 demo units were off-line. Perhaps the only thing that was a bigger disappointment, was the absence of Geoff Crammond at the show. Wow, I didn't know Crammond wrote Sentinel! That really was a cool game for it's time. On the 28th of July I will be first in line outside my local shop to be able to buy GP3. Don't get me wrong I would love this game to be great, to be a real experience that I could aspire to taking seconds off my time, even to rival GPL. however I don't think it will! in fact I think it could possibly be a big disappointment. When something gets this hyped up I think I is inevitable that it wont live up to expectation. I think gp3 could be similar to C & C Tiberan Sun. it will be better than GP2 I have no doubt but I think a lot of people may ask, "well he spent along time tweaking a game, and didn't really add any new big features e.g. internet play, car shapes". I think it will be a good/average game but it will fail as it is so hyped. I don't know what the hype was about Gpl before its release as I am a bit of a newbie, however I doubt it was as much as GP3 has got. Some one may be able to correct me on that. The thing about gpl is it is SO good in parts people don't notice the not so good parts. I will defiantly blindly giving Geoff my 30, and am hoping against hope it will be good. I am defiantly not slating it off now! However I fear our expectations may be let down... oh well just wait for GP4 and if that's bad WSC is bound to be a good game! -- Kieran www.pcracing.co.uk for GP3 and WSC

The amount a game gets hyped doesn't effect it's quality. It may help dissapoint people who have unrealistic expectations. Personally, I expect great things from GP3 because i've played every game Geoff Crammond has written since Revs and I think they've all been superb. Crammond is almost unique in that he's someone well known from the C64 era who is still writing top games today. In "The Sentinel" on the C64 Crammond wrote surely one of the top games of all time, and a totally unique concept too. Also everything i've seen so far from GP3 has been extremely high quality, in particular some of the movies and the wet weather screenshots.

You've lost me there. :) Is this an example of someone not being positive enough for your tastes, or a genuine reason to think GP3 has been over-hyped?
Iain Mackenzie 08 Jul 2000 07:24 UTC#257147
I think the first game he wrote was 'Aviator' - a flight sim on the BBC micro. Then came 'Revs' and the truly wondeful 'Stunt Car Racer'! Incidentally 'The Sentinel Returns' on the PC a year or so ago was a brilliant updating of the original. Iain Colin <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8k5jo7$snk$[email hidden]...

GP3 will be *great* in my opinion, but as anyone who's put >1000 hours into GPL knows, GPL is so far beyond great that a word hasn't been invented to describe it yet. I think this is what you were trying to say in your original post, and I agree. :) There is genuine doubt in my mind, despite what I said about Geoff Crammond, that he will get anywhere near GPL standards. Actually, even a "perfect" 100% realistic F1 sim, wouldn't be as good as GPL since modern F1 cars are so dull compared to '67 F1 cars. Nothing can compare to that sensation of driving GPL cars, battling to put the power down, correcting the slides, trying to brake without spinning, anticipating the change of weight on the suspension. Theres nothing quite like it...

But for some, GPL is a bit stale. Yes, it's a wonderful simulation, but call me an attention-deficit-disorder kid (and I'm 32) but even I eventually got tired of 1967 GP cars and looked for new thrills. I found them with NFS:Porsche, which has a good enough driving model, is quite immersive, and lots of fun. I come back to GPL still, but I'm looking forward to the kicks of a modern F1, even if the program isn't the be all and end all of automotive simulation. Crammond makes kick-ass racing simulations, accessible even to stooges like me who have never gone under 9:00 at the Ring. Stephen

lol ! I've never done under 9:00 at the ring either, although I only started learning the ring last week after hearing about GPL Rank. My best is 9:20 in the Coventry.

Yugh, my best is 9:03; it was 9:04 yesterday afternoon ;-) Got a nice lap, which turned out to be 9:05 (sigh), and after 3 more laps I did one with 1 real spin, but it felt alright, and that was the 9:03. Damn, I'm not climbing fast this way. The hours to gain ratio is getting way high this way! :) Ruud van Gaal MarketGraph / MachTech: http://www.marketgraph.nl Art: http://www.marketgraph.nl/gallery
