Your system *should* be sufficient, but it probably isn't. Most Athlon
users have been disappointed with the performance of the V5 so far.
The general consensus seems to be that the drivers are not well
optimized for 3DNow, making an Athlon perform like a comparably
clocked Celeron.
With a Coppermine P3 the card is fantastic, but for right now I would
recommend you wait and see if 3dfx is able to improve their drivers.

Experiences with the Voodoo 5 5500
Owners praised the Voodoo 5 5500's full-scene anti-aliasing in GPL, NASCAR 3 and NFS Porsche, while noting it was slower than GeForce cards, very long, and reportedly underperforming on Athlon systems. Some reported lock-ups with 2x FSAA under Glide, and one user struggled with Windows 2000 drivers.
hardware: PC/graphicsGrand Prix Legends
Automated summary.
Great card. Not nearly as fast as the GE Force cards but the
anti-aliasing feature lets you run in 800*600 with better quality than
1600*1200 without anti-aliasing. Card a little pricey at $299 but well
worth it. Anti-aliasing really spoils you. Don't think I could go
back to a card without it. Need a fast computer to really take
advantage of card because it is taxing on your CPU.

Really? I have had both cards and the speed difference in sims is
negligible. With FSAA though I find running at high res is just too
much for this card. 800x600 and lower is usally good.

I think the big area of speed difference is the OpenGL drivers/performance.
Most sims use D3D, so the cards will be more closely matched there. Plus
the cards speed won't shine through in a CPU intensive game. Only thing
with a V5 is that you might miss having hardware T&L the day N4 and WSC are
released. Then again you might have upgraded by then anyway.

Don't play Nascar so T&L has no use for me still. Maybe for B172 I
will need T&L though.

It looks great! Glide 22bit filter is really shining in this game. It looks way better
than under D3D or OpenGL. The colors are much darker and details like decals, road
marks, and billboard look very clear.. However, I seem to feel that under Glide GPL is
still dark, even at 3 gamma setting. Getting 36 fps consistently under 4X FSAA and 800 x
600. But 4X FSAA under 1027 x 768 gives me about 24 fps during training. Seriously, I
can't tell the difference. I can get 36 fps with 2X FSAA and 1027 x 768. However, I
still can see some jaggies far ahead down the road.

found the V5's performance on the Athlon to be comparable to the GF2's. They
had convince me that V5 was the way to go for Athlon users. But I can
believe they don't know what they are talking about.
I am concerned, since systems of my type (Athlon/VIA KX133 chipset with a SB
live! soundcard) often have problems with Geforce cards. It almost sounds
like I have NO good upgrade path!

Was that in testing only? I haven't been able to keep the 2xfsaa from
locking up in glide. If I use the d3d, then I can use 2x but not with

I bought a V5 5500 a couple of weeks ago. I tried
to put it into my old PC (P3 500, 256mb, 20gb, AT
case) and it wouldnt fit. I decided that I really
wanted this card so GP3 would run good, so I went
out and bought a new ATX case, K7 Pro motherboard
and a 800mhx Athlon CPU.
Right, got it all in, had to download the W2K
beta drivers (12mb on 56k modem....it took ages)..
My troubles started when I tried to run
Microprose GP500 (moto gp sim) totally freezes
after 15 seconds of playing it, in fact it
crashes so badly I need to pull the power cable
out of the back to bring the system back up..
Quake 3 arena is ok, only freezing for a split
second, the same goes for Triple Play 2000 and
NBA 2000... Monaco Grand Prix 2 plays really
well. In fact MGPRS2 runs f'ing brilliant
(1024x786).
I think this is all down to the drivers and the
combination of the Voodoo 5 5500 AGP/AMD Athlon.
On the performance of MGPRS2 the card runs
fantastic, and my new system runs non-3d like
lightning, its just the problems with some 3dfx
games and the Athlon that makes me impatient for
both MSI and 3DFX to release some better BIOS
updates and drivers to keep me happy...
If any of you have had this problem please let me
know... Id love to get my system problem free in
time for the 28th July... Ive booked my holiday
for the two weeks after that.. guess what im
gonna be doing until the early hours in the
morning? :)
Thanks

Im running W2K for work, and Win98SE for gaming..
The reason I posted about W2K in my initial post was that I had to

which my other PC has..)
Do any of you think this card was rushed when released.. The card is
superb but the overall package is not great...

And an awesome one at that. I think he has a point about the
packaging, though. The heatsinks, and the way in which they're applied
could have been a *lot* better. My V3-2000 has a bigger heatsink, for
pete's sake - and it's attached with a thermal pad (which contacts the
whole chip and has consistent thickness, which is more than I can say
for the V5's goop.)
Kind of sad - the V5 FSAA is fantastic, no card has better all-around
game support, and the 3dfx drivers just get better and better (nicer
than the 'driver-dance' nVidia owners with many different games seem to
have to go through).
3dfx should just contract with TennMax or something ;).
I've bitched in several posts about the heatsinks, but don't take it as
a slam against the card - I have no regrets in picking up my V5. I've
always been willing to tweak my hardware, and I figured I'd just go
ahead and fix the heatsinks myself rather than return the card.
Note that in the V5 NG a 3dfx employee has hinted that steps are being
taken to improve the heatsink mounting - what that actually entails I
have no idea.
