F1 2000 graphics settings for adequate framerate?

Went ahead and picked up F1-2K to see what all the fuss was about. Out of the box the framerate is kinda crappy on my PIII-733/Voodoo5. Between the card and the game I've now got *so* many settings to choose from - and yes, I'm being lazy ;). Anybody got settings they can share? TIA! Geez there are a lot of options you can play with so will probably miss a few. I'm playing it on a P3 800 with a Voodoo5 too. Even at 640x480 with 4X FSAA I found it a bit slow with a full field. At 800x600 2X FSAA it is ok if you turn off smoke and dust particles, mirrors on with no eye candy added, turn off billboards and pit lane objects, high texture detail not maximum, own car to max quality and other cars low, allow only 8 cars to be drawn. Viewing distance I use the non documented changes available in the 1.09 or 1.06 patch (button on far right) and set fog and all other distances to 100%.Sound set to medium, don't use EAX or Aureal 3D sound (takes up more cpu resources). I think that about does it and should give you a decent enough frame rate. -- Nos

Biggest hitter is the mirrors. But that's a tough one to have to lose. If it is only the start, consider mirrors off and/or no-cockpit. After that, consider dropping the textures off of max as well as opponent detail level.

I get good fps (14 start, 25-35 rest) on PII 400 V2, with high detail settings: 800x600 viewing distance high, textures high, player detail max, other car detail high. Environment mapping, specular hightlights, shadows on. Just about all track details on. Here's how: 1) Mirrors off, set a button on the wheel for rearview. 2) skids, smoke, particles, LOW. Higher doesn't look any better and kills the fps. 3 ) I only race against 11 cars. More cars need lower quality texture, fewer cars can have max texture. 3.5) Must set the number of cars drawn to 12, the exact total for all cars, NOT LESS. This seems to make a difference in reducing stutters. In otherwords, that particular optimization is a non-finished feature that only gets in the way and stalls the framerate. 4) Play only ONE TRACK per session. I can change cars, change from test day to racing, etc. But I always restart the game before changing tracks. The more tracks I load, the slower it gets. I'm not just talking about loading times, I mean gameplay. It almost seems like the game keeps a thread when quiting a track, and then opens and shares a new one when loading the next track. Or a memory leak. 5) Take a look at \F1 2000\Config.ini line SystemRating=2 The programs that test your system and decide which optimizations will work best for you where last modified back in March. They set mine up for a rating of 2 and it works great. Others have posted that changing theirs to 5 gives a big improvement in gameplay. I tried 5 and got (and I'm not kidding) no more than 9 fps at all times with awful gfx. So you might try different values. 6) Set track billboards off. This will dump most of the EA Spurts signs, but leave most of the others. It also dumps most of the fencing at Monza. Your best bet is too use the tool at www.fraps.com so you can see what FPS your getting. I have a P3/550, V3-2000, 256mb and I can get 22fps (on the grid with mirrors) to 100+ fps. My settings are 640x480, low cockpit, low other cars detail, drawing distance medium (then adjusted to 55% using the alien head on the main page V1.09 patch), fog low, no smoke, no dust, no spectacular highlights. Keep biliner filtering on or just use FSAA :-) Use 'R' to toggle the mirrors on/off when desired. A true sim racer doesn't need eye candy to enjoy their sim :-) I recommend running full length races by using the multipliers. Set the race distance to 20% and the fuel/tire wear to 5x. You'll have all the strategy of pit stops and the tires will actually wear down. Now, that's where the fun begins! Get the patch at www.3dfiles.com or maybe www.avault.com Enjoy! Jason. ... u don't TNT2 doesn't support FSAA Full Screen Anti Aliasing, i don't think. U need Geforce or Voodoo5 for FSAA Martyn_D DOK wrote: > What is FSAA and how do I use it with a TNT2? > > Rene > > >> After that, consider dropping the textures off of max as well as opponent > >> detail level.

hi setting to 11 cars is actually "display / draw 11 cars" but actually has the full 22 cars racing right ?? I did the latest patch but still the end of the race you will see the full 22 positions or you could have the progress bar and see the 22 cars positions while in the race... No, no, no. The game menu options let you choose how many AI cars to race against. For Testday I think it's in the "rules" section. (for some races it might be in the "unsupported features" section) So if you choose 3, then the game randomly might have your opponents be 2 Minardi and 1 Ferrari, and that is all! The computer only has to do the calculations for 3 AI. You will only see 4 drivers listed at the end of the race. (3 AI plus yours) Racing against only 11 AI drivers and drawing all 12 (including yours) is much faster framerate than all 22 AI and drawing only 5. In fact, for me, racing against 11 AI and drawing all 12 seems smoother and faster than drawing only 5 of those 12. (In both the race and replay). I don't know why. Maybe every time the game decides to switch drawing a different car, it swaps textures in and out of my only 12mb V2, even if it doesn't need to. Tom
