Well Papy and Crammond spent 3 years (give or take) on GPL, N3 and GP2. EA/
ISI had to rush out F1-2000 in less than a year I've heard. Ok they used the
SCGT engine, but probably spent 90% on graphics, not advancing the multiplayer
and physics so F1-2002 should be great! :-D

Best current F1 sim for a Ferrari fan
A poster asked for the best modern F1 sim with real teams and tracks. Suggestions split between waiting for GP3 and buying F1 2000, with Nos noting that hidden sensitivity settings could make F1 2000 harder. Greg Cisko and David Masten criticised Crammond's processor-occupancy system, which let players slow the game down deliberately, and Ruud van Gaal noted NASCAR 4 would use an improved GPL physics engine.
Automated summary.
Hey now, Papy hasnt announced anything with regards to an F1 sim. Although
DK's comments in the HG interview certainly hint at something :-) I'd like
to see one too... they could have a 2 fer 1 deal... 1 game, with both the
2000 season and the 1976 season :-)

A lot of the "top" racers would deliberately turn up all the graphics so
that the occupancy would be over 300%. This would enable one to drive in
super slow motion, which makes it pretty easy to hit all your brake
points, apexes, etc. I thought that these guys were the biggest bunch of
weenies - to deliberately exploit a flaw in the design of the game AND to
take away the whole fun of the driving experience just so that they could
tell their mommies how fast they were. There was a big controversy about
this in the LFRS league.
When I played on my lowly P100, I ran the damn thing in VGA mode. I would
rather have it look like crap and still feel like I was driving an F1 car.
Hopefully, Crammond has rethought this approach. With regards to online
play, either he has been forced to adopt the more common (and more
sensible) approach to drop frames rather than expand time, or everybody in
the race would have to synch to the expanded time of the lowest common
denominator (yech).

The physics still left more to be desired though. So what's your pick at the

Can you wait about 1 month? "Grand Prix 3" is set to be released in that

Someone was trying to tel me that F1 2000 is easy compared to MGPRS2.
Well, last night I played around with the undocumented sensitivity
settings in the patch and by adjusting these you can make it about as
hard as GPL if you want. F1 2000 is definately the top notch F1 sim at
this moment in time.

No I'm not. If it turns out to be good, then great... But simply claiming
that it will be good because it is called GP3 is nuts. Once it is released
it may be fine.
BTW, the "Best F1 sim for a Tifosi" would be one where a ferrarri

Same goes for F1 2000 though...the non patched version was well maybe
equivalent to what's already out there, but then just like SCGT there's a
miracle patch that makes it realistic...how are we supposed to know it
really is that good? And why can't EA release a product like Papy, MGI, or
Crammond which is solid right out of the box?

Because of the way that Crammond had historically dealt with Processor
Occupancy, I think all of the GP sims he has produced have huge
faults. Simply maxing out your Processor Occupancy to get faster
lap times is not cool. If GP3 has this um "feature" then it is doomed.

Yep. Same with World Circuit. I think Dave Masten is the real
expert with that though. I seem to remember he posted some
huge thing about it here in the NG several years ago.

Wait a moment here... are the laptimes in GP2 depenant on the
processor used? I know that GP2 run in slowmo when the processor
occupancy got overloaded, but I never thought it would influence the
lap times...

level that the game ran really slowly, thus making it incredibly easy to
react to what the car was doing because it was taking longer for everything
to happen.

Oh Greg, stop stroking me :-)
Yeah, I whined about it a long time ago. Glad to see there are a lot of other
whiners now :-)
BTW, I did still enjoy GP2, though nowhere near as much, for its time, as the
original World Circuit (which we had to wait over a year for after the Amiga
release).
Some flight sims have also done this, F18/A Hornet for one. Not quite as bad
there as in driving sims where it is all (well, mostly) about timing.
I've actually had fun with F1-2000. The multiplayer component could be improved
immensely by having a client/server model and allowing practice/qualifying but for
getting it out so quickly it's not so bad. I liked the SCGT physics so it was not a
problem for me to purchase F1-2000.

Ofcourse, clever boys... Thinking about it, even it something like
that was possible for GPL (thank God not) I don't think it will be
easier to drive faster in GPL. Without the feeling what the car does,
driving must become impossible...
Andre
And look at that fine mess Ea did with F1-2000. They should have never released
such a horrible product.

They did in fact state that Nascar4 will use the (improved even) GPL
phsyics engine. So that would be nice as well, even though I like F1
more than Nascar (quite a bit).
