While I understand that Fester is trying to give you some quick and helpful
advice, I'd be careful utilizing these automated translators. You see, when
our corporate mainframe crashed just last month, my co-workers and I had
quite a fun filled afternoon on just such a translator. We'd enter a
statement in, select "translate from English to (spanish, french, german,
whatever) then copy the response, reenter that statement in and select the
appropriate reversal "translate from (spanish, french, german, whatever) to
English. Of course it quickly degenerated into a hilarious hour or so of
entering slank statements and laughing at the responses ... but, you get the
gist of my warning. I'd try desperately to get a human who can do the
translating for you. Perhaps a local school teacher could offer assistance.
I do, however, wish your daughter the best of luck. The best year (well,
summer actually) of my life was living in Germany as a transfer student.

it's just that I have had so much good advice and help on this ng in the
past that I felt it was the best place for me to try first.
My daughter is going to France tomorrow morning on a school trip. She will
be staying with a French family during the evenings (she is going with 2 of
her friends) and I wanted to write a short note to them thanking them for
looking after her while she is there. However, I don't know much French and
was wondering if there was anywhere on the web that I could submit a short
letter and have it translated into French.
Apologies once again for the off topicness (is that a word??) of this post
it's just that I would like to send this message to the family in their own
language rather than expect them to translate it themselves (although they
are probably more than capable).
Many thanks for your time

http://world.altavista.com/ You can type in the message you'd like to
send & select "Translate from English to French." Hit the Translate
button, and you should be good to go. Good Luck & best wishes to you &
your daughter!

http://babelfish.altavista.com is probably the most popular language
translator on the Internet. Very easy to use, but the results are from time
to time questionable. Yet I found it very useful translating the German
language in the Mercedes Truck demo! It's a "word to word" translator, so
you will loose any idiom or stylised structure. If you need any other help,
feel free to email me I could even help you personally.

And don't believe that kind of translations are 100% correct.
Better let someone who speaks French do it. Ymenard?
