Indy Racing 2000 N64 review sparks IRL versus CART argument

A GameCenter review of the N64 game Indy Racing 2000 by Andy Mahood, which included jabs at the IRL, was posted. Jay J and others objected to the reviewer's attitude, while CART supporters defended him, and the exchange turned into a partisan IRL-versus-CART argument. A side discussion imagined a career mode in which players move between teams and series.

The bad: Muddy, washed-out graphics; horrific pinball physics; poor collision detection; terrible AI; extremely banal and annoying race commentary. The bottom line: A poor title with dated graphics and questionable "gameplay" that call to mind first-generation N64 titles. Multiplayer: Up to two players can race against each other. ESRB rating: E (Everyone) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------ CNET Gamecenter Review By Andy Mahood (7/14/00) When Indianapolis Speedway owner Tony George broke ranks with CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams) in 1996 to form his own Indy Racing League, he started one of the biggest jokes in North American motor sports. Populated by a mix of semi-retired and no-name drivers and suffering from constantly dwindling attendance and TV ratings, the IRL has managed to survive solely on the strength of its Indy 500 Memorial Day classic at Tony G's family-owned facility. Infogrames and Paradigm have just released their own IRL-based N64 game entitled Indy Racing 2000, and I've got to think that they're in on the joke because I can't believe that anyone would turn out such a steaming pile of doggy-doo with a straight face. Screen Shots Click the captions for more game shots! -Burning rubber -Must pass him -His mom... -Number 20 -I'm in 19th place! Driver, Tracks, and Automobiles A conventional racing title at first glance, Indy Racing 2000 ships with the usual complement of gameplay modes and car/driver selections. Twenty licensed drivers from the IRL ranks are represented, including luminaries such as Scott Goodyear, Eddie Cheever, and Greg Ray, as well as nine authentic oval tracks. Players can choose to run a tweakable IRL machine in Single Race or Championship mode or alternatively work their way up through the Midget, Sprint, and Formula Car ranks in the game's Gold Cup Career mode. A pair of multiplayer options (Versus or Gold Cup mode) for two players is also included. Unfortunately most of this is of little consequence because Indy Racing 2000 is so painful to play that ultimately only the most masochistic of gamers will have the patience to exercise all of these options. Graphic Poverty It's almost as if Paradigm put the title together with suggestions from a book about racing game construction called Don't Do This. The first thing that jumps out at you is the game's bland graphics. They're dark, muddy, and so totally devoid of detail that you will be hard pressed to keep your car off the wall when it suddenly looms into view against the game's colorless, pixelated background scenery. The frame rate can also get choppy at times, which is surprising considering the first-generation N64 graphics that are in use here. The game blows yet another tire with its atrocious audio commentary. A crew chief/spotter throws a never-ending diatribe of useless information your way (for instance "go for the draft" when you're already sliding backwards against the wall). The game's announcer commentary is so full of banal phrases like "Boy, can he drive!" that you will want to seek him out and kill him just a few minutes into the game. Thankfully, both can be turned off at the Options menu. continued page 1 | 2 Hell on Wheels Indy Racing 2000's poor audio-visual presentation could have been offset somewhat with a decent driving model and some savvy AI, but unfortunately Paradigm appears to have saved the worst for last here. The vehicle physics in the game are reminiscent of a ball rolling around the outer rim of a roulette wheel. There is no discernible sense of grip or road feel, the cars rotate around on a central axis like a cheap compass, and spinouts are purely arbitrary. In fact, just about the only way to get yourself into trouble is to come into contact with the outer wall or one of the interminable AI "roadblocks." The former will cut your forward speed in half (the walls appear to be made out of Velcro), whereas a brush with any of the AI vehicles will bring your car to a near stop. The game's weak collision detection also permits you to run your exposed wheels right through those of any other car on the track. Finally, the AI drivers are completely oblivious to your presence and appear to be fixated on pitching their cars into improbable 90-degree slides every few hundred yards (down the straightaway no less) or just getting in your way as much as possible. The word aggravating doesn't even begin to describe how bad these morons can be or how decidedly unpleasant the whole Indy Racing 2000 pinball driving ordeal is. The fact that there is no apparent difference between the on-track dynamics of a Sprint Car or an IRL machine (or that there are no proper dirt tracks on which to run the former) only serves to punctuate the ludicrousness of the whole experience. Blown Engine If you're a die-hard racing fan and an N64 owner, then you really owe it to yourself to stay as far away from this game as possible. The IRL is already the laughingstock of the racing game community, and an abysmal video game treatment like Indy Racing 2000 will almost certainly add to this dubious reputation.

I take it your distaste for the IRL arises from the fact that you are an expert at open-wheel oval racing, which thus qualifies you to proclaim that the racing in the IRL is sub-par? If that is truly the case, then please tell me, in great detail, what it's like to race wheel-to-wheel on a high-banked oval at over 200 mph for a sustained period of time -- that's what Little Al (who is merely "some sort of media whore," and NOT a real racer in your book, apparently) does on a regular basis. Even most of the teams, drivers, and owners in CART don't share your views of the IRL, so that should tell you something. Then again, it appears that you already know everything, so maybe they're wrong, too. -- JB In article <01beb58f$865327e0$779e8ad1@default>, "Brett" <[email hidden]> wrote: > It's simple, he gets paid, people read, you don't enter equation. Well-said, Jay -- Mahood just attained "hack" status in my book. Any respect I had for the man just went in the toilet. I don't care if he does acknowledge the inherent goodness in GPL -- the kind of tripe he threw around in that review was totally uncalled for. He's a racer himself, so you think he would have some modicum of respect for the guys in the IRL for what they do. Obviously he doesn't, though, and, and apparently he doesn't mind risking his own credibility to spout off about it. >:-[ Then again, maybe he wrote the IRL review immediately after he did his "drinking and simming" article for PC Gamer. Still, there's no excuse for B.S. of that calibur. Mahood would do good to take lessons from Randy Magruder. On the subjedt of the IRL, I didn't get to see the Atlanta race today -- busy with a hot freelance job and a short deadline, but I heard the outcome (no spoilers from me!), and I have the race on tape for later viewing. -- JB (Founding member of the IRL Crew, and charter member of the Anti- Andy Mahood Society) In article <mXac5.10756$[email hidden]>, "Jay J" <[email hidden]> wrote: > The screen shots of this game look VERY much like the 3 year old ABCSports > Indy Racing game, including the sprint car feeder series! > > I wonder if they upgraded the drivers names and car paint jobs, thenported > that old game over to the N64 and put it back on the shelf forsale?!?!?!? > > As for the review, frankly I was disappointed in the Writer. A pair of You know, I always though that something like this would be very neat to have in a game. I'd like to see a game where you can work your way up various racing series and/or within a series. For instance, in a F1 game you can change teams between seasons based on how well you are doing. Of course, this would be very hard, if not impossible to do for a licensed game. The other problem, if you have multiple series, you'll have to have different gameplay and physics for each series. Considering the amount people bitch and moan about game physics here for one game (unless it's GPL of course), they are bound to have a field day on a game with multiple cars. So anyway, are there any games out there with something of a career mode? So far I can think of: Dirt Track Racing SCGT 24 Hours of Lemans

The screen shots of this game look VERY much like the 3 year old ABC Sports Indy Racing game, including the sprint car feeder series! I wonder if they upgraded the drivers names and car paint jobs, then ported that old game over to the N64 and put it back on the shelf for sale?!?!?!? As for the review, frankly I was disappointed in the Writer. Andy Mahood writes the flying/driving column for PC gamer and also does reviews for CNET's "Gamecenter.com" He usually does a good job of giving an honest review of each game, but he spent as much time making derogotory comments about the Indy Racing Northern Light Series as he did describing this Nintendo Console/Arcade game! I don't doubt that this game might stink, but taking cheep shots at a racing series that he obviously doesn't like turned me off, in fact I wonder if his editor knows he was using a game review to publish his own personal opinions of an auto racing series??? Granted the IRL may not draw crowds like NASCAR or F1, but... The racing they put on has been great! Loads of fun to watch the open-wheelers go 2 and even 3 wide at just about every event they put on! It's the best kept secret in Motorsports if ya ask me! Anyway, back to the review, like I said it sure as heck looks like they ported that old ABC Sports game over to this console offering to make a few bucks! Thankfully we won't have to put up with this crud on the PC! Brett, I'm not upset that Andy Mahood obviously doesn't like the Northern Lights Indy Racing League, nor that he felt that the upcoming Indy Racing 2000 for the Nintendo 64 is a lousy game. What I take offense to is his abuse of "power" as a journalist, and obvious cheep shot that he took against something he personally doesn't care for in a video game review! Just imagine if Mr. Mahood wrote a review about hmmm lets say NASCAR Racing 3 and spent almost as much time bashing NASCAR as he did reviewing the quality of the game! He did exactly that in his review of Indy Racing 2000! What if Andy Mahood wrote that all NASCAR fans, drivers, car owners, series officials, founders, etc... Are nothing more than a bunch of redneck, beer drinking, cigarette smoking, cowboy hat wearing bubba's who live in trailer parks, drive old broken down pickup trucks, are missing teeth, beat their wives, children, dogs, have low IQ's, etc, etc, etc.. I mean give me a break, if your gonna write a review about a video game, then write the f**king review and be unbiased and impartial about it, don't spend your time trying to tell the public what you think about the series the game was based on!!!!! Yes, JBodin, I'm definitely with ya on this one, in fact I took the time to write the editors of CNET to complain about Mr Mahood's review in which is abused his "power" as a game reviewer to spout off his obvious dislike for the Northern Lights Indy Racing League in a game review. If he want's to editorialize, then get a job for the Indianapolis Star & News newspaper and take pointers from Robin Miller, but don't do it in a video game review for God's sake!!!! Oop. You're right, bad choice of words.
(Oop. Forgot to change the header. I doubt that people would have read it the first time as it was in the middle of an IRL flamewar.) A pair of You know, I always though that something like this would be very neat to have in a game. So far I can think of: Dirt Track Racing SCGT 24 Hours of Lemans Of course, those are all released within the past couple years. Any others?

Eeeer no change in physics... just like GPL, u just model different power, grip, and also cover different downforce and weight.. Martyn_D
They made one as an external program to run with Monaco GPRS2, I recall. You had to tell the prog your lap times, finish, how often/if you crashed, etc, and it worked it all out. Of course, you could cheat and tell it you won every race, but where would be the fun in that? Only a guess, but perhaps the Unofficial still has it. www.the-unofficial.com -- Colin Harris Colin Harris in N3/VROC ICQ 25485061 Remove "your knickers" to reply > > So anyway, are there any games out there with something of a career > mode?
