Notable threadFlame warLeaked warez build of Grand Prix 3 judged a GP2 update

Early impressions from a leaked warez copy of Grand Prix 3 described it as largely GP2 with 3D graphics, force feedback and weather, with complaints about graphics, missing tyre pressure settings and canned spins. Robert Platts and others argued a warez build could not be fairly reviewed, while file dates and the readme suggested it was close to final. Posters argued over whether four years of development had produced enough progress, with some name-calling.

or tire temperature setting i knew there was something wrong. You don't set tire temps dipshit. This proves the rest of your post is worth spit. snipped a bunch of dumpshit from a idiot. You can't do a review of a warez dumbass because alot of stuff in warez games are usually ripped out of the game. Now back away from the computer and leave the reviewing to the people who get paid to do it and know what the hell they are talking about. This is absolutely not what I was wanting to hear =( Lets all just hope the warez verison is OLD and not as good as the retail. We'll know soon enough!!! ...Colin

Maybe, just maybe there is an upside to it being so similar to GP2. It might make it easier for the cleverones out there to get the hundreds of addon tracks working with it. The graphics will need sprucing up, but if it is the case, its gotta be the silver lining on what may be a rather dark cloud. I still live in hope that Crammond hasn't made his first imperfect game.

you said it basically sounds just like GP2 (right?) Well the early press versions of GP3 had the original sounds. This sounds like a pretty early version, so would still take this experience and advice with a tad bit of salt. Not criticizing you, as I think your opinion is probably quite fair, it's just that we don't know how close it will be to the final yet. Hi, Before i start...yes.i read the warez version might be 7 week old code..if so i don't expect the release to be much much different except for some details like sounds... I drove with all aids off...that includes no steering aid. So what makes GP2 the best F1 sim ever?...it was for quite a long time but still?!... I know F12000 has a few big downsides but where it concerns simulating a car's behaviour F12000 beats GP2 with ease... I don't call myself an expert but F12k got bashed by a lot of people...and GP2, including it's physics engine, is still getting raved about. I got the warez version of GP3(i'm not the patient type)...and i like all others hoped for big things...but it's not what i expected by far:( The original poster was correct as far as i'm concerned...it's not worthy of the '3'...but just a '2.5' All the menus..everything...it's all the same... Car feels like it's on rails...floor it and drive superfast laps without any problem, if you know the circuit you'll qualify #1 in a few rounds...the cars feel totally dead... I think the canned spins are still there aswell as far as i can tell(saw someone else's comment he thought they were gone) Yes..you can catch the back when it starts sliding but the window is *extremly* small. Very unlike GPL and F12K where you really can have a major back brakeout of which the in-spin behaviour is influenced by what you do with the throtlle and go 'owwww...i just catched it' In GPL and to a lesser extend in F12k it's allmost an art to catch the back..in GP3 it seems to be just a case of immediatly release the throttle completly and you'll be fine....there seems to be no counter responce of the car from doing that except the back twitching back nicely to 'center'...no nice smooth slight back sliding powering out of a corner And call me a nitpicker...but it still has the 'i'm waiting for the green light in #1 gear and i have full throttle but the car won't go untill the light hit green' Ok..no showstopper but man after 4 years of developement i'd expect the freedom to jumpstart and get a black flag... There's the wet weather...well...as much as i'd like this wet weather in GPL it does nothing for me in GP3 because the car behaviour doesn't feel right anyways...so why bother driving it in the wet. GP2 was awesome for it's time, but along came GPL and along will come Nascar4(high hopes for that one to) and WCS ain't to far off. GPL now 2 years old goes way beyond what GP2 did concerning the physics... And 2 years later comes GP3 which i'm sorry to say i see as a pure GP2 resell. A few positive things , AI is *way* way better in GP3 then in F12k... GP3 gfx engine ain't to great but there are no big annoyances like the 'popup' that's in F12k... My feeling is really it's GP2 with wet weather and new gfx...and better AI... GP3 will give a better overall experience i guess compared to F12k...with the excellent(sofar) AI and the wet weather, but if you buy a sim like this for the physics of the car and you don't care about AI cause all you wanna do is race online against humans(another sad absence in GP3) then GP3 ain't to hot....... Call me a bastard for trying the warez version for all i care...but i'm glad i didn't find this out after i got the original...i've bought enough depressing 'hype' games allready....and in europe we don't have the nice return policy they have in the stated...once you buy something you're stuck with it. i'll cancel my pre order tomorrow:((( On Fri, 21 Jul 2000 22:54:23 +0100, "GraDee" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Any texture in any game will look blocky if you get close enough to it. So try to stay on the course. And I really don't care what some "warez" version is like. "Danny" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:f52e5.1669$[email hidden]...

Well I'm quite sure this the final, the ff works fine with me, be sure to turn it on. I love it in some aspects but really hate it in others. The graphics are a pain to the eyes, especially in sunny weather when the colors are all wrong. The crowds just give you headache. And there's some sort of seem (?seam?) in the sky where the bitmap ends meet eachother. I like the driving but it's far too simple. My first timed lap at Silverstone, without any aids, no steering help with the default setup was a 1:26.4. That's just too easy if I can magage that in my second lap. There something really strange about the behaviour of the car to the curb. When you're really on the limit you can get on the curb far too high and get some sort of railway. The wet weather is nice to drive in (make sure to choose the right tires), but the graphical transitions from one state to the other are just plain ugly. A nice thing for quite some people (not for those who upgraded their system big time) is that it's very soft on the hardware. Probably because of all the bitmaps (instead of 3d objects) and the simple textures. The car model is extremely ugly, especially if you drive behind someone. GP2 had better looker cars (when following). The schemes on the car are in the F199 league, especially the McLaren. I just hope it's the same file format so we can change it. It's a big dissapointment for me, although I have to say that I love the way the AI defends their lines. I haven't driven against them yet but just watched a race. Lots of people don't like the sound, but I kind of like it. And about the canned spins, I don't agree. The car spins perfect, and if you loose it on wet grass you keep on sliding. So good points: - Driving model, although it has it flaws - Wet weather - AI - Force Feedback (I like their implementation). - Low system requirements Bad points: - Plain ugly (except when raining, but especially during transitions) - It's just so ugly. So if you just look at those points, we can say that it's a great improvement. And yet it doesn't quite feel that way. I like it, but I expected more. However I'm still getting my copy but I just hope they'll change more than just the season data for GP4, or otherwise I won't buy it. GPL is still the king, WSC comes and beat it please. I appreciate that coming from you, John. :) It's funny, people say that about Papyrus, but just think of the lineage of Papyrus open-wheel sims: 1989 - Indy 500 - the Simulation late '93 - ICR1 (plus Indy and other tracks in May '94) (fairly comparable to GP1) late '95 - ICR2 (hi-res graphics & new physics) late '96 - ICR2-3D (Rendition 3D enhanced) late '98 - GPL (revolutionary - no other word for it) (new physics, graphics, and online racing all in one package) Crammond has: Jan '92 - GP1 July '96 - GP2 July 2000 - GP3 (GP 2.5?) IMO, Kaemmer has come a lot further in 11 years (or just 7 if you start with ICR1, my first sim) than Crammond has in 8 1/2 years. While people slam Papyrus for using the same old game engine ("old wine in new bottles"), I think that applies a lot more to G.C. Crammond does a great job of making "accessible" sims, and GP3 will most likely be a big seller as a result, but the new ground is being broken in the Papyrus sims. Oh, and I hear Papyrus has put out a few taxi-cab sims in that same period, too. ;) To top it off, Sierra has also distributed SODA Off-Road Racing and Viper Racing, a couple of very nice "little" sims (said in the appreciative way people refer to low-budget "little" films, ie: great results, particularly in consideration of minimal resources). We may not get a new CART sim every year or two <sob>, but Papyrus hasn't done too bad... But they might by now. :) I think stuff like the game time-clock being uncoupled from real time (ie: slowing down time to make a given frame rate) and the replay glitches (things happened differently in replays than the just had in the game) were more serious problems. And the fact that G.C. never patches. Gaming magazines have a dicerning habit of praising a game to death until they actually review it... something to do with exclusives I guess. ;-( I've gotten seriously burned buying games on the strenght of a preview in the past. Not about to make the same mistake again... then again, they'll probably praise this one in the review too, because "it's by Crammond"(tm). Jan. =--- Chris Bloom wrote...

I could careless about GP3 since I never had any interest any the game in the first place since it was well known for along time it wasn't going to be anything great. The point of my post is that you can't review a warez version of game because he doesn't know what build he has of the game all you know is the warez version could be a mid beta build. Wish My last name was Plant :) and no your still a dipshit for doing a review on a game that is a warez version, because you don't know if it's late, mid or RC (Release Candidate) build. I'm not taking up for GP3 but it's been widely known for awhile the game wasn't going to have any vast improvements over GP2. Its very hard to have a typo between temperature and pressure. If it doesn't have Tire PSi settings then I'd say its a very early build maybe even a alpha since if I remember correctly Gp2 even had tire psi settings and I seriously doubt Crammond would take a step backwards , he might not take a step forward and stay in the same spot but I really doubt he would release something that would be a 10 yr back step in racing sims. If it's just a re-hash of GP2, how can you say it will be the best F1 sim on the market with competition like F1WGP and F12K? Frankly, the F1WGP demo feels a LOT like a very-nicely updated version of GP2, with EXCELLENT graphics -- and the "jump in and drive" replay feature goes a long way towards making that a VERY nice little racer in its own right. Compare GP3, which seems to break NO new ground and (as far as we've seen so far) seems to have inferior graphics, and it sounds to me like a losing proposition all around. If GP3 is just a repackaged version of GP2 with poorly-done 3D graphics, then we should be able to find it in a few months in the bargain bins, right next to all the $9.99 copies of OF1R and Al Unser Jr. Racing. Forget anything I've ever said about Papy resting on its laurels -- if this is true about GP3, then Mr. Crammond's laurels must have bedsores. -- JB In article <%%2e5.6634$[email hidden]>, "ymenard" <[email hidden]> wrote: > "Danny" <[email hidden]> wrote > > Basically its not GP3 its gp2.5 > > [Let's get ready for some big flame wars on r.a.s. btw!!! Peter Prochazka 22 Jul 2000 00:24 UTC#253212
Well, I must say I couldn't resist trying the warez version now (please don't flame me for that, I'll most certainly buy it when it comes out - was just curious) I've played GP2 quite much and since about a year I play (sorry, drive:-)) GPL exclusively (only a little bit NFSPU from time to time). OK, here are my impressions of the first hour: First of all, "canned spins": I'm quite certain that the spins are not "canned" like in GP2. You can catch a slide if you are quick, also when the car is spinning it still reacts to steering and braking. Of course the car breaks loose very quickly and if you're too late with opposite lock the spin is unrecoverable, but I'd expect such behaviour from a modern high-downforce racing car. This is not GPL sliding heaven! Well, lets come to the point, I find the physics quite accurate, but certainly a thing to accomodate when coming from GPL. I haven't entered the setup menu yet, so I can't say what's in there. And yes, driving in the rain is hellish. Trying out the F1 in GPL for the first time was easier for me :-) The graphics really are quite blocky when coming near a texture, but I don't find it too bad. The rain looks pretty good especially the reflecting track surface and the spray from the tyres. I run a V3 3000 and have sometimes texture errors on the track (black patches in certain corners), but maybe it is because I don't use the latest drivers or maybe it's not the release version. Hopefully there will be a fix for this. I can't comment on frame rates in various conditions yet, but in practice mode the game ran at a very playable framerate (1024x768, all details on, PIII 450, V 3 3000, LWFF). Controllers: I still couldn't set up my LWFF properly. GP3 seems to support split axes, but the problem is, the LWFF seems to use nonstandard axes when in split axes mode (Z-axis) and GP3 only lets me set Joystick A and B X and Y axes. Is there any proggy out there which can map axes? Maybe I should try the Wingman profiler again. I also couldn't calibrate my combined throttle/brake axis properly, so it always gave a little bit gas even when I didn't press the throttle. But I think these problems can be sorted out. Contrary to Danny's comment, FF is working here and it feels quite good. I have only the impression, that there's quite a lag with the forces, so when FF is set to full, I have to fight the wheel when I want to apply opposite lock. I think it's more than a graphics-beefed-up GP2, so all you people waiting for it, don't abandon all hope after Danny's post! Maybe it's you who should back away from the computer....back away and realize that just MAYBE Geoff Crammond isn't the second coming of christ.....realize that MAYBE Grand Prix 3 won't be "the shit." Having played the warez version all I can say is, the released version better be WAAAAAY better than this warez one. In fact, I hope it's a completely different game and that maybe this was just the proposed shareware version or something. After playing it for about an hour (not much, I know), the first thing that came to mind was Daikatana, as in..."I waited several years for THIS!?" It just looks and feels so much like GP2, it's scary. This may have been ok three or four years ago, but not now (in my opinion at least). Just some things I've noticed that have turned me off right off the bat. The cars, or rather the movement of the cars. They don't appear to be firmly planted on the ground. For example...at Monaco, when the cars are rounding the Loews hairpin and going downhill, they sort of "sink" down the hairpin. The road goes downhill, but instead of the cars following the change in elevation, they stay straight and level which makes the front wheels appear to be off the ground....just like World Circuit and GP2. Another is the way in which all tracks kind of look the same. For example, it seems that every track uses the same style of curbing, only different colors, unlike F1 2000. In F1 200 for example, some of the curbing at Spa is very wide and very pronounced. In GP3, all the curbing is the same....flat strips about 3 inches wide. Also, everything appears to be flat and smooth. In F1 2000, you got the feeling of driving on uneven pavement as the car would bounce up and down while going down the straights. In GP3, it looks as if you're driving on glass....no imperfections in the surface whatsoever. Another thing which irks me is the lame ass penalty system. Cut the track and you get a black flag, which equates to you abitrarily being reduced to 35mph for 15secs or so, rather than actually having to come into the pits for a stop and go. Again, just like GP2. And what if there is a car on the track and you have to cut the track to avoid it. Bam! Penalty. It's sort of like being black flagged in N3 for speeding down pit lane when you happen to spin through it because of an accident. And then there are the canned spins. They appear to still be around. I can induce a spin, let go of the wheel, and most of the time the cars comes to rest facing the exact same direction. Eerie! There's more that underwhelms me (like the sound), but I've gone on too long as it is. With that being said, I know this is a warez version, and when the release comes out, I'll probably buy it on sight, if only because this warez release can't possibly the final, or even close to the final (at least I hope not). But I must admit I am nevertheless disappointed, especially after all the hype.

Maybe because people actually expect some advancements to be made...some significant advancements. When something is in the works for THREE YEARS, I think people start to think, "wow, it's been in development for three years...they must really be doing something special over there," not, "yeah, I know it'll be just like GP2.....but Its gonna have TCP/IP!!!" After trying the warez release, it makes you wonder what went on in the four year span between GP2 and GP3. Maybe the first three years, they were just debating whether it should be called "Grand Prix 3," or "Grand Prix III." It's kind of depressing, really. I mean, Falcon 4.0 was in development for quite some time as well, but after playing it, it's easy to see why it took so long to release it. Grand Prix 3 on the other hand (or was that Grand Prix III), just makes you scratch your head and go, "what the f#$k?" Kind of like Daikatana.

It is a dissapointment in terms of graphics. Damn I have a Geforce2 and it looks horrible. If this game had the graphics and tracks like F1 World Grandprix it would be the ultimate game. I am afraid Danny is right this ain't Gp3 it is actually Gp2.5. I can't believe it took all these years to release a new version and then it looks like this. I have to say the wet weather races are spectacular. One day we will get the ultimate sim I hope. ymenard wrote:

I just spent about 30min playing warez version of gp3. Its not final version, the FF wont work and a few other little things but nothing mayor. Its prett close to final im very sure. Well i have to say im quite discusted at what i have just played. Im still in shock really. This might sound harsh but its not. I suppose as a game overall its good and it is probably the best F1 sim around but i am TRULY dissapointed. Basically its not GP3 its gp2.5 All the menus are exactly the same. Ok lets get to the actualt physics which is most important. Well when i saw the setup menus and found that there were no camber settings or tire temperature setting i knew there was something wrong. Basically it feels like gp2 A LOT LIKE GP2. Actually the actual game LOOKS like gp2 just with better slightly better graphics. When you go close into barriers they are incredibly pixelated,I have to congradulate crammond hes made the first game ever that i have seen pixelated in the last 3years using a 3d card.I have never seen blockyness on any game since 3dfx came out. The game sounds 99% like GP2 which is totally pathetic and unforgivable, its sad infact. And the game STILL HAS CANNED SPINS I am in shock as i write this still. You give it throtte and u spin around 180 degrees all the time. I still havent really felt much difference from gp2 its sad to say. Infact I think F12000 has the better model its certainly more dynamic but that did have a weird detached feel to it. GP3 like gp2 feels more connected but its not as dynamic as F1 2000. Even the trees are a bit blocky. The wet seems like it could be fun i played it a bit but the game is still in the dar ages. the set up options are EXACTLY the same as gp2 down to packers. EVen ubisoft had tyre pressure and temperatures, and camber settings and that was 4 years ago FFS,i cant beleive crammond. He is still obviosly stuck back in the darkages and so is this game. This isnt even in gpls league. Not even in the same galaxy. gpls graphics make gp3 look pathetic.there is quite a few times when u see blockyness, andthat is unforgivable in this day and age.GPL looked like an oil paintingit was so smooth.Crammond is quite pathetic releasing this and calling it gp3. Sure ill play it and have fun playing it and so will pretty much everyone.just dont expect a revoloutionary simulation because its not that.Dont expect a F1 equivilent or GPL because its not even close. First, I want to try out, how the game works on my machine, which is even more important for driving sims (framerates, controller issues, do I like the feel of the car?, etc.). I don't know, if there will ever be a demo version and I don't know of any store in Vienna, which accepts returns. Second, simply curiousity and impatience :-) Since GP3 is one of the most awaited driving-games this year (just look, how everyone jumped on any new screenshot, which was posted somewhere), I simply couldn't resist to try it out a week before it is out, regardless of the common sense, that "warez are bad". There are only two possible scenarios for me. Either I like GP3 and see a chance, that I play it as frequently as GPL, then I'll buy it. Or, if not, I'll delete the warez version, there's no need to keep a game that isn't played. There's a week to decide which way to go. And please, don't use this as starting point for an endless and senseless warez-debate, I won't say anything more to this issue. Peter

Hi, To david...nope...no EB in the netherlands. And returning software is a *big* no no here. Yes..you can return something...when the box is un opened and the plastic seel untouched. Like give someone software for their birthday...they hate it and can return it... But if you buy something, play it and don't like it no way you can return it. The whole warez thing is always good for some controversy. *If* i could return software after trying it out i wouldn't bother with warez.... But as it is now i try out things, if i like i buy if i don't i won't. I buy a car after having taken a test drive, i buy a monitor after having seen the picture on a show model and after having seen the picture of the one in the box which i'm getting...and if i get home and there's stil something weird with the tube that shouldn't be there i return the thing...etc..etc.. So it's high time we get a return policy for software here aswell... I'm sure warez/piracy has an negative impact on sales in general, but i think a good percentage of the impact lies in the fact that people get to see it before purchase and decide it ain't worth their money, and a lesser percentage in the 'i have it as warez so why buy it at all' There's also the demo option, that's also a good way to show a customer just what he's gonna get for his moeny.... I drove the GPL demo and was 'sold' after driving one round on WG. I never even saw or noticed the warez version of GPL, and if i had i wouldn't have bothered with it...the demo itself was more then enough to convince me so i pre ordered it and couldn't wait till it actually arrived. Off course there could be other reasons but i'm really not suprised there was no demo of GP3... I can understand people liking GP3 for reasons off overall gameplay but i think a demo would result in more people wanting to buy it but deciding not to after the demo, then vice versa. And to rrevded...actually i have deleted it last night...not because i'm such a politically correct person but because it's far from my liking and i don't feel the need to play something i don't like anyways...to little time for that. I just called to cancel the order and the guy said i was the 3rd person calling today about that. One could argue this is because they have a warez version now and don't need to buy it anymore but i think people who pre order software would really buy it if they like something...eventhough they have a warez version. To me(personal opinion) GP3, even with the wet weather and improved AI, is really a blatant rehash of GP2, a quick moneyfix...it's like C&C tiberian sun(which i sadly did buy..duuhhh). I have quite a load of legal software....mostly flightsims and a few classic games like dune2000, descent 1 and 2, etc... As for driving sims all i have is ICR 1 and 2....GP2..and GPL... GPL was the last one i bought, and it's so amazing and it showed what great programmers can do that i haven't bought a driving sim since... I did try the warez version or demos of allmost everything that came out since then...it all got rerouted to the trashbin after a few hours of play. I'll read the release reviews here, cause maybe those can convince me there are many differences between the warez and release version. If you sift out the people that go 'it sux' and the 'it utterly rules' and get the ones that are somewhere in the middle i usually find reviews i read here are much closer to reality then the reviews on the big web sites... All that said, it's a warez GP3version, and i hope it's an early beta but i doubt it. The people who respond to a unbiased review of a warez version with 'you have shit for brains' just because it is a warez review are the ones i tend to ignore. Because sadly it does seem to be the release version or something very close to it....and not a load of code from many months ago... oh well...bring on N4. We have heard this story with the warez release of every major title recently. Name one that was better in any significant way (not just minor bug fixes) from the one-week-before-release warez version. There aren't any to name. The GP3 warez is version 1.0...there are certainly a few little graphical glitches and the like that need to be fixed (and may be in the retail version), but to make this even GP2.5 would require a major re-write of all the code. It ain't going to happen. So please, name the titles that were different from the warez versions. Marc. I will. I deleted the F12000 two days after installing it. Only bought it after the unofficial patch came out. I don't even tape music or burn copies of it (can you say the same thing, Mr. Moralist?). I own every CD I play (music and computer). I can't even imagine my reaction had I run out and bought GP3 without checking in here first and checking the 1.0 warez for myself. I would not have believed the people saying it was just GP2.5. After 4 years of the genius at work (now with a huge team behind him as well), I would have said those people must be on drugs. It couldn't be such a minor improvement. Looking forward to being proven wrong on retail release day, but not holding my breath. Marc. "rrevved" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...
