Complaints about warez arguments taking over the newsgroup

Douglas Ellison argued that warez is inevitable and posters should stop fussing about it, which led Bruce Kennewell to reply with analogies about tolerating crime. Others argued over whether trying warez before buying differs from theft. Tim Wheatley objected to warez links leading to porn-sponsored sites, and several regulars lamented the newsgroup's recent bad language.

Automated summary.

A few months ago I looked in on RAS and it was full of sensible debate on most racing games, (esp GPL) and got a lot of thanks and a lot of flaming for telling people to chill out re: GPL - a Sim / Arcade- GAME! I'm gonna say it again people.. Where there is Software - there is Warez. People will download software - so stop flaming them - it's going to achieve ZERO - ZIP. I'm awaiting my pre-order of GP3 from Gameplay.com - and havn't got the b/width to download it - I honestly don't know if I would - probably not! So - those of you who downloaded it - USE YOUR HEADS and don't brag about it here - it's just gonna get tempers flaired... Those of you who object to warez - USE YOUR HEADS and realise that nothing you say can un-download something that's already on someones HDD! And by the way - I've been thanked for having a reasonable attitude re: Most things in RAS in the past - and I'll be posting my considered opinion on GP3 when it arrives on my doormat! I hope the people saying it's Good are right, and those calling it gp2.5 are wrong - but frankly - It's 30 - and I've been waiting for 3 years for this! Doug

Of course. The problem is many people don't just do it to test...stealing software (and music) is a way of life. You won't find too many people espousing the "let's buy 2 copies of title X to support the developers" mentality outside of the fanatic community of any particular genre. I have the GP3 warez and I also got the F12000 warez (first time for me). I have no qualms about testing these titles and I wouldn't keep warez, but I do fear that the plethora of discussion about it here will encourage the less than savoury use of it. I believe we should feel free to discuss reviews/impressions of warez, but should eliminate all the frenzied salivating about where to get things, etc. Unfortunately, the hype machinery (in here in r.a.s. and from the marketeers) is so difficult to penetrate and the so-called independent reviews in magazines and on the 'Net are ludicrously unreliable...and demos either come out months after the fact or not at all...and publishers are insane enough to release products in one continent months ahead of others.... I am 1,000,000 times more worried about Napster than I am about a few fanatical r.a.s.'ers not being patient enough to wait for the retail release of the most anticipated racing title of the past few years. On the basis of that argument, Douglas, why bother hunting down a mass murderer.....it's something that will always happen? Why go to the lengths of bringing to justice a drug pusher.....it's something that will always happen? If your personal effects are stolen, why bother whinging about it.....it's something that will always happen? Just because it HAPPENS doesn't mean that we have to live with it. What pisses me (very much) off is that they post links to the warez, so you lick it and see a site sponsored by the Britney Spears Blowjob foundation. Yeah, like all the warez defenders who say it's like test-driving a car, etc. - when it's more like robbing the car at midnight and driving it for a week, or a few years. I do vehemently agree with the original post on one point - if these folks steal the stuff, more damn power to them - that's THEIR conscience that has to deal with it - but don't tell ME about it HERE. It's not the place. Don't tell me you did something illegal, and I probably won't know about t - or care. Bring it up here and you MADE it my issue. -- Ken's Sig 3.1 "Who is the more foolish? What amazes me is all the people who is posting with full names in a public forum that they have stolen software on their computer. The police might have a field day. Another this all this issue has brought to this newsgroup is the bad language. As you, I just can't belive how this pretty wellbehaved newsgroup has turned into a shouting ground. On the High Gear GP3 forum someone is calling everyone else a idiot and pathetic losers. Very positive. I think this is my two arguments in this messy matter, I would stick my hand into a beecube if I start to argument for/agains something specific going on no matter what opinion I have, so I think I'll just shut up :) -- Olav K. I know you think that when people say they are really gonna go out and buy the game after downloading it, that they are lying through their teeth, but some of us actually mean it. Again, tell me where the official Microprose GP3 demo can be found, every other company has managed one...

when I first started reading r.a.s, this sort of rubbish was not at all prevalent. I think anyone who criticises others in such an obnoxious way is obviously somewhat unhinged themselves, but I guess thats the problem with a public forum, *anyone* can say what they want. <sigh> I do wonder when all this fuss will die down so I can actually log on again without finding 600 new posts of which 500 are warez-related shouting matches. Try saying that in a Dreamcast newsgroup. I bet it will be very hard for you to find people who have pirated DC games. >So - those of you who downloaded it - USE YOUR HEADS and don't brag about >it here - it's just gonna get tempers flaired... I wonder what those people will do if and when PC game market has virtually died off, and they have to play console games like on Dreamcast or new Nintendo, which are not as easily pirated?
