So How Is NSR?

42 posts by 16 people · 16 Feb 2005 15:57 UTC - 19 Feb 2005 15:01 UTC

Early impressions of the full NASCAR SimRacing release

Users shared first impressions of the full NSR release. Complaints included a broken spotter, VOIP problems, frame-rate drops with anti-aliasing, force-feedback quirks on Momo wheels, and direct IP that required logging into the online service first. Some said the full game handled better than the demo, while one anonymous poster insisted it was a huge step up from NR2003.

Strange - out for a whole day and no comments so far ;) Anyone care to share their impressions so far. The few forum posts I've found suggest the worst-case scenario in that the demo was a fairly exact representation of the final product (car shape, mirror, sound, spotter, diff .... etc). However, I'd really like an excuse to buy this as I'd like to run the new rules and could do with a change. Regards

I'm a game addict. ;o) I'm not so perplexed. I'm going to get it (hopefully today). I'll get my money's worth just by running off line against the AI. (Practice . . . practice . . .practice.) But I do hope enough Rascar drivers are willing to take the chance and that we can try at least a few races online. Elrikk

I have heard it does not support the TSW.

There is a post on onlineracin.com where the TSW guys fund a way around the issue I believe. "JD" <JohnAnderson221z(nospam)@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:OwLQd.11664$[email hidden]...

I setup a 25% distance race with the tire wear and fuel consumption set to X4. Every race I've tried like this has had a problem at the beginning of the lap that everyone will be pitting on. I'm at the back of the pack and entering turn 1 the whole pack slows waaaaay down. It took me about ten minutes to find this huge bug. I guess beta testing wasn't a big priority! Day one and already waiting for a patch!

But wait, there's more!!! 1. VOIP doesn't work. 2. Spotters don't work. 3. Don't get me started on the Frame Rate issue. NO FSAA or your Frame Rates tank, and the graphics look AWFUL without it. 4. If you are using a Momo, do not set the FF to Full. That actually turns it off LOL. Set it to HIGH instead. 5. Ejected from car on crash? Sheesh! I'm not giving up yet, but so far it looks like Thunder 2005 and that's a crying shame. After all the Hype we get this? Oh, btw... Took me 10 min to find a screen name that wasn't taken. You can drive Daytona both day and night. When you choose the Daytona track, you click on the rules tab right next to the track tab, and choose whether to run the Daytona 500 or the Pepsi 400. -- David G Fisher "The Captain" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:FDeRd.33730$[email hidden]... > > "Marc Collins" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:8aUQd.7740$[email hidden]... > > Drive the trucks...all you'll get is night. > > Oh there's ANOTHER strike against it! > > They can't even get the day/night car/truck track associations right... > >
Does anyone have a 'return to center' spring effect while playing the sim? I have the FFB to full, reverse effects and a MOMO Force racing wheel. I must have something setup wrong, because this driving model seems very strange--the centering spring for one is quite annoying, and the FFB are practically non existent--even smashing head on into a wall at high rate of speed gives little more than a small vibration, if even that. I fired up NR2003 to make sure the wheel wasn't broken, and it isn't. I have also tried FFB at High, and there is little difference. With the FFB set to medium, the driving reminds me of Chase for the Cup--there is simply no feel, at all, coming through the wheel. I will keep fiddling with settings, but I see there are no longer any more control options in the *. plr file. I can't believe any serious sim would force a centering spring effect. I hope it's my setup....

"The steering is SO sensitive to me but I'm working on that." This seems to be the biggest problem that I have. Getting the wheel setup so that a slight twitch doesn't send you into a wall, but not so "dead" that you are turning the wheel 180 deg. to make a turn at Tally. Of course, it's nothing new for EA games, it tokk me weeks to get the steering the way I like it for F1C. Certainly there is the "newness" factor and getting used to the way the game reacts to controller movement, but it just seems to me that the same things that have plagued past EA racing titles still exist. Addtionally, anyone who praises the graphic excellence of this sim, but omits any negativity regarding the car models should immediatley be discounted. The car models are awful. I understand that EA is going ito issue some kind of "patch" for the 2005 paint schemes, but I doubt that they will rework the entire model. The 4x4 look to them is a problem and unless you use the .hdv change and forfeit the option to run online (due to mismatched files) this is another problem that needs to be handled. And just how long does the "sticker" on a new tire last? I ran behind an AI car for 20 laps and the sticker never went away. Why bother with a "feature" like that when IRL it only shows up for a handful of laps? The aggression level leaves me wondering. I turned it down from the default 95% to low 80% and still get slammed all over the track. It feels like JJ vs. Harvick in T2 yesterday, but everywhere. I can't seem to find a happy medium for AA/AF settings. 4AA and 4AF are just high enough to make the image look good, but at Daytona, I am getting 30 fps at the back of a full field. (P4 3.0ghz, 1024 RAM, Radeon 9800 Pro). Any higher looks awesome during testing, but it's a stutterfest during a race. Finally, the setups that are included are awful. Understeer would be an understatement. Without changing them, I'd guess AI would have to set at 80% or lower just to keep up. If you "setup handicapped" like I am, then you no have to wait for the sim community to start spitting out decent setups. I've tried to tweak the default ones and have gotten a little better, but they need a lot of work, if not dumping the whole lot of them.
Larry 18 Feb 2005 19:12 UTC↳ reply to Darus#25136
Actually, I think the AI is pretty decent. At least they _try_ not to make you a Piniball. The AI in NR2003 is it's weakest points. Those boys are nuts! You are absolutely right about the setups and understeer. The setups need serious work. Try Richmond. With any of the setups you spend half the turn with your suspension hanging on the ground showering sparks. I'm not kidding! Richmond is a damned treat though beyond that. Give it a try. It is quickly becomming my favorite short track. -Larry "Darus" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Yet another game that doesn't work off the bat with the TSW. What's so difficult about it??? There's no drivers to make it work, simply plug it in and calibrate it in the Windows game controller manager. Why wouldn't games accept that? Papyrus/Sierra was the only game company, in memory, that hasn't given me problems with my TSW. Plus, have any of you read the disclaimer at the back of NSR box? 1) You have to register to play online. 2) EA reserves the right to remove the online servers a) 30 days after the servers come online for the first time or b) 10 days after the beginning of the 2005 season (again if I remember correctly). What, no direct IP racing? P.
The problem with the handling is because your ff isn't working right. Once you get that sorted, the car will settle in nicely. I had the ame problem when my ff wans't working. -- David G Fisher "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:1zpRd.46785$EG1.23009@lakeread04... > I'm not sold on that quite yet :) > > I'm all over the friggen track! > > The steering is SO sensitive to me but I'm working on that. > > -Larry > > "David G Fisher" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:[email hidden]... > > > The full release is much better than the demo so you have more to get > > excited about. :-) The car handles *a lot* better. > > -- > > David G Fisher > > > > > > > > > >

Actually there is Direct IP but not until you log into their server. Damn... -Larry "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:GIsRd.48590$EG1.45594@lakeread04... > You know, you're right. There is NO direct IP online. > > Damn... > > -Larry

Your telling me that to even use direct IP you first need to connect to the EA servers?? Sigh. "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:OAtRd.48948$EG1.38727@lakeread04...

This is sounding remarkably similar to when I first tried EA's F12001. I hated it at first but the more I perservered with the controller/car setup etc the more I liked it.

Sure looks like it. You don't see the Direct IP option until you are on the GameSpy server. -Larry "Schooner" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:i6uRd.82$NN.35@edtnps89...

No, LAN is a separate connection button from Online. -Larry "Steve Simpson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... >>> Actually there is Direct IP but not until you log into their server. >>> Damn... > > So you can't play on a LAN unless it has internet access???? That sux >

Well, there MAY be hope but it will have to be tested. In the LAN connection, you can select LAN, Cable or DSL. I can only assume you can put in an IP as the race server address. We'll have to try this to see if it works. If they have limited it to single-segment IP then it won't work. -Larry "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:RCARd.51882$EG1.4909@lakeread04...

Odd, my TSW2 works flawlessly, aside from the sensitivity issue. This was the first EA titles that worked right off the bat for me. TSW2 Stock, added clutch, added 2 buttons. Rockfire USB adapter.

I do like the full version of the game though.
