Sjon Stigter defends Grand Prix 3 against its critics

Sjon Stigter wrote a long defence of GP3, saying it grew on him after initial disappointment, especially its rain and drying racing line. Alexander Marx and others agreed it was far ahead of everything except GPL, while critics said only the weather was good. Jan Verschueren noted that all player cars behave the same regardless of team, which some found disappointing.

This message is for all you guys who shout that GP3 sucks, that it's a joke or that it's a piece of shit. When I first tried Grand Prix 3 (which was at 3 am CET saturday morning) I also was a bit dissapointed. "This looks a awfull lot like Grand Prix 2", I first tought. I decided to go to bed after about 3 laps at the A1-Ring as I was very exhausted after a hard and long day. Saturday I didn't have much time to play Grand Prix 3, I did about a lap or 15 on random tracks. Sunday I had all the time of the world and after getting out of bed at 12:00 I first took a shower, made myself a breakfast (or lunch, just how you look at it) and decided to see what Grand Prix 3 was worth. I did around 100 laps mostly on Monza in friday practise all day... And I must say my toughts have changed completly from what I thought on Saturday at 3 AM... I really love the game now.. The weather is just amazing... It's great to start a session with some dripping on some parts of the track... it starts to rain harder and harder... every lap the track gets wetter and wetter, every lap is different... You can see on the tarmac how wet it is... some parts of the track are wetter as other parts. Making the right tire choise is very hard... "Should I go for intermediates or full wets?"... Then at the end of the session the track starts to dry up again, some parts of the track start to show a dry line, other parts are still very wet, again the question, which tires to put on starts, intermediates, full dry or should I hold on to these wets for a few more laps? The track is drying up and the opposition is starting to put down faster and faster laptimes, there isn't much time to think about which tires should be best... Brave as you are you put on dry soft tires for a fast lap, only to find out that some parts of the track are still to wet to be driven by dry weather tires... What to do now? Get back to the pits for intermediates or stay out on your dry weather rubber? The track keeps getting drier and drier every second. I seriously doubt that you criticasters have been playing Grand Prix 3 long enough to go through a 1 hour session with changing weather conditions. All what you guys do is look for little holes in Grand Prix 3 to slag it down... Well if we are going to do it that way then I can mention quite some things which aren't right about the "oh so holy RAS' Grand Prix Legends" but if I do that you guys probably won't agree with me anyway as Grand Prix Legens is just too holy here.... - To those who put down Grand Prix 3: Try Grand Prix 3 for a few days extensive... I will tell you that your thoughts about it will be completly different from your first thoughts, just like it was in my case. - To those who then still think Grand Prix 3 is bad after trying it for a few days: This is all your own fault... you got your hopes up waaaays to high, that Grand Prix 3 would look alot like Grand Prix 2 was to be expected, who didn't expect that is just plain stupid. You have been raving here for months how good Grand Prix 3 would be, got others excited and now you're dissapointed because you got your own hopes set to high... Right now I am noticing that you guys are doing the same to World Sports Car as what you did to Grand Prix 3... you're shouting: "This is going to be the next Grand Prix Legends!". Instead of learning your lesson from Grand Prix 3 , where you got your hopes up ways to unrealistically high you're now bombing the next thing to be like heaven... I can tell you that you will also not like World Sports Car... Not because it's bad or anything but just because you're expecting to much of it... This way every game will be bad. If I where the West brothers I wouldn't give a single pic nor even talk about World Sports Cars anymore, just to prevent that there will be a unrealistic hype around the game which it can't live upto. - To those who haven't got Grand Prix 3 yet but are getting worried about all the negative comments in this newsgroup: Don't worry.. Grand Prix 3 isn't bad at all... These newsgroup has thousands of visitors on a dailly basis and about 10-15 people or so seem not to like it, problem is that people always shout loudest when they don't like something... when you do a good job nobody will tell you you did good... That's human nature, sad isn't it?? Well, that's about what I had to say.... one last thing I like to say: If you like Grand Prix 3 (and I know many of you do) let it know, don't stay quite.... hmmm... I am sure I am going to get alot of flames on this post... but I don't give a f@#k... I will be racing Grand Prix 3 at Monza, Belgium or San Marino anyways and have a great time and probably won't read all these flames anyway :) -- Sjon Stigter [email hidden]
Nope... all cars act the same to the player, there is only one "player" model. Like I said, it's a Crammond perogative. I'm not up to date with the GP2 scene, but I'm pretty sure there are editors that can be updated for GP3, which will allow you to tailor the car you drive to it's real world performance relative to the AI cars. But then again, say you do this for Arrows and you later switch to McLaren, you have to edit the player model again. This time to simulate the McLaren. Jan. =--- SKurj wrote...

Sijon, you are right. I am getting more and more puzzled by the reaction to the GP3 release in this NG and on the High Gear Forums. If you compare GP3 with all the other competitors except the masterpiece GPL (which is *still* ahead of its time), it is lightyears ahead. The dynamic weather system is revolutionary and takes simracing one step closer to the excitement of the real thing. Most of the other things people criticise in GP2 are not the result of bad programming nor do they want to "rip" you "off" - these are design decisions. To everybody who is interested in GP3: get it and form your own opinion on the game. You might be surprised. Don't cancel your order just because some wacko feels like posting "GP3 sucks" and "25fps are unplayable". cheers, Alex
Impossible... the Arrows will go just as fast and handle just as well as the McLaren (for the player). Jan. =--- SKurj wrote... > Well i have now discovered differences in the cars... > McLaren is able to get away with less wing than other cars > > Martyn_D
SKurj wrote... > <snip> > Anyone tested all the different manufacturers cars? > I haven't been able to see a difference, but I'm no > race sim expert. To the player car is always the same, no matter what team you drive for (except for the colors, obviously). It's a Crammond thing. Jan. =---
It's always the track that moves... otherwise the viewpoint would remain static and the player car would drive off into the distance... good luck trying to lap in this manner. ;-) Seriously, this critique is unjust in the case of GP3. The car doesn't feel "alive", IMO, but the impression of movement is there. YUP. This so dead on, my feelings and experience as well. It has grown on me. And with the weather has become even more than I ever expected..........the track drying only on the racing line. as you lap I find just amazing. >This is all your own fault... you got your hopes up waaaays to high, High hopes will lead many to be dissapointed. Hopefully if you keep driving it, it will grow on you, as it did with me. Cheers **ElfKing** T'was in a kingdom long ago and far away......

This I don't understand. GP3 is great because the game looks good driving in the rain? :-) How about when dry? How about the fact that, according to others, you don't feel like the car is moving, but only the track moves? That reminds me of some of the 80s arcade 2D racing games. The car does not move, only the track moves. "Sjon Stigter" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8lfsr0$1jo$[email hidden]...

I agree, GP3 is good, and good fun. I've never driven it with aids on, tho its not hard to get around the tracks at all. As far as my laptimes,, go I am inline with the semi pro AI, at least on a couple of tracks. I've got 6-8 hrs racing time on GP3 now at least. The blocky gfx.. I don't even notice it anymore. My only beefs are... NO way to save a replay that i've found yet And the damn Idiot AI +) they'll dive inside u, get their frt wheel alongside yer rear wheel but they don't seem to wanna back off... of course not bein able to hear another car 4-5 ft away doesn't help. Anyone tested all the different manufacturers cars? I haven't been able to see a difference, but I'm no race sim expert. As far as the physics go.. I've slid the rear end out around a turn and not lost it in one of these "canned" spins I keep hearing about. This game is a RUSH!! just finished a race at SPA, the sense of speed is great! (not quite like RC2000) Got more respect for the real drivers now. BUT having said all that I have to add 2 things..... Without multiplay over the net, and this slomo shit, GP3 is gonna dissappear and be forgotten by Xmas. I sure won't purchase it until it can handle multiplayer over the net. I agree. I haven't even checked out the weather yet, but what I do like is thte feeling of speed. Lacking in most sims, it feels like it looks on the incar cam in the real Grand Prix that we see on TV each two weeks. Some say that it groips too well. I have always been disspointed by how I have low grip on bends, but in real life, these cars stick like gue and they get driven hard on the corners. This is GP3, very real. The incar sound is like the incar sound in real life as well. I'm lucky enough to have a quick system that allows all options on full, with perfect frame rates. P3 650 at 910 256Mb PC133 GeForce DDR overclocked At Hockenheim, if I sit last on the grid in a quick race, the Occupancy is 60%, and 50% if I stay still and the AI's have gone. I run at all options on with manual graphics at 1024x768

SJon you say the same crap the other gp3 suppoters say when they try to defend gp3 and say how good it is.. You all talk about the RAIN,and how good it is,and how nice the track looks, should i come in for intermediates or should i stay out on slicks or some crap like that. The only good thing about the game is the wet and thats all you can say to defend the game, because in the dry its crap and the phyiscs in the wet aint that good either. geoff has fooled u with the wet weather, ,wake up you moron. It's not a question of FPS (25 feels mightily fast, JLGP2) or whatever, just "common sense" which not applied in this case.
