I was going to get an Asus AGP-7700 (nVIDIA GeForce2 GTS) for racing
sims, flight sims and Quake type shoot-ups. After reading this
article I'm now a bit unsure. What *is* the quality like for these
cards for these types of games? Is it worth it to go for the Voodoo5?

Voodoo 5 5500 AGP = 216
Creative GeForce 2 GTS = 216
The V5 is the faster card for GPL.

Another clueless review that uses 3D Mark to tell you which card is
faster. I'm referring to the below quoted text.
"3Dmark 2000 test scores (using MadOnion's 3DMark 2000 version 1.1)
ELSA Gladiac (which uses the GeForce2 chip): 4298 3Dmarks
Creative Labs Annihilator2 (GeForce2): 4182
Creative Labs Annihilator DDR (original GeForce): 3730
3Dfx Voodoo5 5500: (Voodoo5) 2774
That's not a good showing for Voodoo5, which scored only 54 percent of
ELSA GeForce2's score. Even Annihilator, which uses a six-month-old
GeForce chipset, is 34 percent faster than Voodoo5. (All benchmarks
were run on a Pentium III-550 with 128MB of RAM)"
3D Mark takes advantage of Transform and Lighting, which the Geforce
cards do, but the V5's don't. There are next to no games that use T&L
so these benchmarks using 3D Mark are basically useless. The Geforce2
is faster, but no where near as much faster as that benchmark would
have you believe. I had a Geforce2 and returned it for a V5 5500
because it is true that it is a more compatible card and does full
screen anti-aliasing much better than the Geforce2 does. And it is a
useful technology right now. I'm not going to tell you which card to
get because they are both good. I'm just telling you which I prefer
and why.

CHeaper the Geforce
Compatible with any olde stuff u might have that is glide only
Smaller performance hit in FSAA i believe
A little slower than G3force, but not by much
Geforce.. probably the fastest card on the market right now..

Maybe those 3DMark 2000 D3D scored cam be explained by the driver bugs (or
at least I genuinely hope it's a driver bug) that cause the card to be
faster when operating with only one of it's chips in GP3 and Thief. The
same thing also happens in Grand Prix Legends under Glide.

I'm trying to decide which one of these two to buy (before Friday) to
replace my aging VoodooII.
Will GPL run ok with the GeForce2 + the new patch ?
What's the general opinion, GeForce2 or Voodoo5 ?
ta,
Andy.
The V5 is the faster card for GPL.

It's not a bug in the drivers. When 3D Mark benchmarks it uses the GPU
on the Geforce2 card so of course it's going to give a higher
benchmark number. But, every game I have wouldn't use the GPU like 3D
Mark does so the numbers are useless. When games come out (B17-2 and
Battle of Britain are two examples) that use the GPU for T&L funstions
then yes they will perform better on a Geforce2 (maybe 20%).

And for very many other games as well....imagine that...Quake 3 is not
the best benchmark in the world....<VBG>

No that's not what I meant, I'm just saying that on my V5 if you turn off
one of the chips, some games actually get faster. I was only comparing the
V5 with one chip working to the V5 with both chips working. This happens in
Grand Prix Legends (in glide only), GP3, Thief and Superbike 2000 (all d3d)
so far.
:)
hehehe.....

Actually the framerates are pretty similar with both cards exchanging
speed crowns in a variety of games.

Actually I wanted to do a "professional" review but I dont own the
only two programs used by "professional" reviewers 3dmark 2000 and
Quake 3. I got stuck benchmarking it with 8 games....damn. And no the
title is "The Tortoise and the Hare"...lets see I wonder who the
tortoise is and I wonder who wins that race...ummmm

Notice how he *always* says "huge" frame rates with the GTS? And he
says he's not a fan-boy. Sure Peter, we *really* believe you. :-)

Thanks for the replies.
I finally made my mind up and this lunchtime I bought a Creative GeForce2.
I've just installed it and checked out a few games (GPL included) and wow !
I hadn't realised how slow my Voodoo2 was :)
Looking forward to seeing GP3 tomorrow,
Andy.
