Eldred finally breaks 1:30 at Monza in GPL
Eldred, known for his slow GPLRank, celebrated breaking 1:30 at Monza and improving at Mosport after switching to left-foot braking and the Lotus. Regulars congratulated him, joked about the 'St. Eldred's Cup' for slow drivers, and discussed how practice in another sim and left-foot braking help. He later found he could not recreate the form on other tracks.

When I first tried it in GPL, I could only do it at Monza. That's where the
1:30.53 came from. When I tried it recently, I couldn't stay on the track.
Then I got F1 2K from Ebay. I tried it in that sim(I was pissed at GPL). I
figured - EVERYTHING is new, so it couldn't hurt. After I came back to GPL, it
didn't seem so hard then...<shrug>
I'd say switching braking gained me about a second or so on each track. The
leaps I took last night must have been due to the Lotus - HAD to be.

1:29.32 in Ferrari. I ran about 30 laps. Turned a 1:32.xx first lap. Ran off
5 straight 1:30's. Shoot, maybe I'm just stuck here... Lap 7, 1:29.42. Ok,
not a record, but close. Lap 8, 1:29.29. New PB, but not by much. Let's try
a different line in a couple turns - oops, 1:36.xx. Ok, calm down, keep it on
the track - 1:28.00. WOW!, big drop! Try getting on the gas sooner...
Assorted screwups...lap 14 - 1:27.12, lap 22 - 1:27.05, lap 23 - 1:26.67, lap
28 - 1:26.12, lap 29 - 1:26.07(!) Got greedy on the next lap(trying to get
into 1:25's...1:34.xx - screwed up the jump. But, I was on a pace for a
mid-1:25. In all, 13 out of 30 laps were UNDER my previous PB.
Hmm - I wonder what would happen on a different track? Mexico - only 5 laps,
each one was under my PB - dropped 1.63 seconds total.
Rouen - ran about 5 or so laps - PB dropped 1.95 seconds total.
Zandvoort(tempting fate) - dropped Lotus PB to 1:30.11, but my 1:29.73 in the
Brabham stands. :(
Discouraged(slightly), I quit GPL, to update my GPLRank handicap. But, I had
another thought...hmm, do I *dare* try it?
Start up GPL again - MONZA! My PB with the Lotus was 1:30.53, and a 1:30.17 in
the Ferrari.
Lap 1 (recon) 1:36.42
Lap 2 - 1:31.38 getting up to speed...
Lap 3 - 1:30.31 PB with Lotus, but not enough, darnit. Maybe I was deluding
myself...
Lap 4 - 1:29.85(!) oh, SHIT! - did I read that right???
Lap 5 - 1:29.83 WTF, 2 in a ROW?!? I'm still in shock over breaking 1:30,
and screw up the 2nd Lesmos
Lap 6 - 1:30.13 - not bad after that brain fade...let's try one more...
Lap 7 - 1:29.21!!!!!
Lap 8 - out of gas....son of a... Ok, I can deal with that...<g>
So, to recap - 5 tracks, 4 new PBs, lowered my handicap by almost 7 seconds,
got under 1:30 at Monza!

I keep struggling to get under 1.30 at Monza.

Now that's progress!
Nice goin'.
After reading this, I just had to improve on some track, and
Mexico was kind enough to give me a new pb! (just over half a second).
And still, "I feel the need... the need for speed!" (Ok. Old, but still !)

Okay, now I'm really choked!!! Granted I've only owned GPL for 3 weeks (I
know, I know...) but I thought I was making great progress at Monza by
turning laps in the mid 1:31's all the time utilizing left foot braking. I
have always used my left foot to brake while simming due to some experience
rallying (sp?) in a little Ford Cortina in the early 80's. So... just when
I'm feeling good about myself... along comes Eldred and decides to "try"
left footing it and BAM!!!, he's under 1:30!!! I think I hate you, Eldred.

He brings you down to his level, then beatsAfter reading this, and seing that you had beaten the only half-decent
PB that I had, (Monza, 1:29.46) I just had to have another go at it.
First run: 11 laps, most below 1:30, but no records.
Second run gave a 1:29.22 on the last lap, new PB! Wow, i'm on to
something here!
Third run, 11 laps of gas again. Lots of mistakes, trying too hard.
Going through Parabolica fuel pressure needle starts falling, last
chance, focus, focus! My back is getting wet and my eyes are tiring.
Manages to finish without any stupid moves and exits to see the times.
And what do I see? Lap 11: 1:28.92!! After all those laps it took to get
below 1:30 I never EVER expected to go below 1:29.

Thanks for responding (being a celebrity and all :-)) Now i'm thinking
i should pick up F1-2k instead of gp3. Gotta work on the left foot
stuff. I think i'm going to do what you did as I've got a good setup
(ch-pedals) and am instead using my lwff with a squash ball. What do
you think of f1-2k? What's a good price for it? I'm always pissed off
at GPL but I think a combination of track knowledge and left foot
braking could catapult me up the charts? BTW I'm still ahead of you at

some more tracks tonight with the Lotus, and I couldn't re-create the 'zone' I

At the Glen I lowered my PB for the Lotus by .32, but my Ferrari time is still

'clean' lap at the Ring that was still 10 seconds SLOWER than my PB.

is like I am in a certain mode and I can dump a second or two at a
track. Come to think of it I think it happens when I return to the
Lotus after driving another car. Hmmm, maybe by pushing myself in a
slower car I set my self up for better laps in the Lotus? Who knows,
last night I did PBs at Monza, Mexico, Spa, and Mosport. It is also
when I have a night like this that I know that I am just not spending
enough time wth GPL. The other odd thing is that I tend to be able to
only race for a short amount of time before my I just can not drive at
a track any more that night. Happened at Spa last night. I was online
racing Spa and the last race just went to (*&#, so I was done for the
night.

From what I've read, you recently converted to left foot braking (at last).
One of the advantages of left foot braking, is that you can stabilize the
car during braking by applying some throttle. When you where in the "zone"
you probably unconciously did that. Once you master this technique,
trailbraking isn't as hard as it used to be. Thus even lower lap times.
Keep om GPL-ing. But watch out: If you get too good, your celebrety status
as the benchmark backmarker will be lost. One good lap at the Ring, and your
reputation is lost. <g>

Well, I'd sure like to know how to get BACK in the zone. Someone's locked me

Being a backmarker is a GOOD thing? I'm still ranked at 500-something. I'm
trying to STOP being a 'King Hiro - celebrity be damned...<g>

I think you're a little bit wrong there. In time, you'll get smoother going
from brake to gas and back, and find that you can handle just a little more
speed through some corners. I'm guessing this is what happened to allow the
Lotus to suddenly gain wickedly.

I honestly cannot understand how people can get any sort of good tiems
with right-foot braking in GPL. I wouldn't be even close to my current
times at a place like Spa if I did it.
You have to try not to associate "driving GPL" with "driving a road
car". Think of it as a "ground-based flight sim". Once you do that,
then you'll stop trying to handle it like a Ford Escort... in any case,
you only have to worry about two pedals here, whereas most road cars
have three (in Europe, anyway), so that's one difference to start with.
