Well, maybe he WAS working on GP4 the last 2 years? Okay, I'm a VERY

Agree on most points, although many games, esp. those that have to
appeal
to a broader audience, still have a software mode. And I definitely
haven't seen the end yet..I mean...what end do you mean? ;)

Did Crammond promise an all-new engine for GP3?
Posters disputed whether Crammond had promised an all-new engine for GP3, with Mark D recalling an interview in which he said GP2 would be the base. Some argued the Windows port and 3D support required rewriting most of the code and that the car can now roll, while others said it was a simple port that did not raise the bar. Ian P showed that tyre wear is displayed, but Uwe Schuerkamp questioned whether it depends on driving style.

Nope, but I definately do remember an interview at least a year ago
with a mag (probably either PC Format or PC Gamer) and he definately
stated that he was using GP2 as a base. Something along the lines
of "After all the work I've put into GP2 I'd be mad to throw it away
and start again".
BTW, this isn't me slagging the game off. I haven't played it and
probably never will - just not interested.

Looking at the graphics, not only during rain, I don't know what you
expect from the graphics. Looks better than any other modern F1 sim.
It does in some areas, and is at least equal in many others.

Also that as soon as GP2

so much so that he had no time to play
GPL or anything at all, hence he could
not place GP3 anywhere in relation to

GP3 is a re-programming of the game (GP2) from being a dos program to a
window one. Also from software graphic engine to one supporting 3D
graphic cards. So, my opinion is they have redone it, even if the menu
and some aspect of the game still look like GP2 !!!.
I got programming skill, and i know that, the GP3 team and Geoff
Crammond deserve better for what they have accomplished !!!!
It's never easy for a programmer to switch from an old programming style
(like dos) to a new one, like crappy Microsoft Windows (you must be a
programmer to understand, that one).
GP3 was the next step for them, if they would have done too much change,
people would still have complain that the game doesn't retain the
essence of what GP2 was !!! I think, in this area, they have done a good
job !!!
I predict GP4, will get quite further in improvement, since the window

Good job GP3 Team and Geoff Crammond from a programmer who understand

Yup, the car can roll which is great, the problem is that is doesn't
show on replay when your own car is rolling for some reason.

It does on my version. I got hit from behind by that eeejit Hill

three times losing all the detatchable parts (4 wheels, the entire nose

I have programming skills as well, and know it is sometimes better to
scrap everything and start from scratch.... patching and hacking old
code doesn't make for a better product (especially one that is 4-6 years
old). I wouldn't hold your breath for any major improvements in GP...
If it took them 4 years to produce GP3, they won't have much time to do
anything but make track and car alterations for each new release.

Right. Windows is not that difficult, and looking at the program, he
avoided the type of programming it requires. Just a flat port of
sequential instead of event-driven code.
Which is not that bad for games :)
But certainly not brilliant or anything. And going from DOS to Windows
was already initiated by a lot of Windowy libraries under DOS itself
which also work/worked with events etc.

That's ok, but you shouldn't spend your time programming it while the
other parts need the work more badly. Let the D3D and OpenGL drivers
do software emulation. Why reinvent the wheel?
> And I definitely
>haven't seen the end yet..I mean...what end do you mean? ;)
The end of the world ofcourse! ;-)
For me personally it is the end of the GP series. I can't see, judging
by what has been delivered after 4 years of programming, that a sequal
in 2004 or so will not be surpassed by most sims/games on the market.
So it's no use getting a 3-axis patch in 2004. :)
Unless Geoff smartens up and puts a team on it, and enjoys the fruits
of his name at a small warm sunny island and gets the heck away from
doing any more programming himself.

GP4 should be an "add-on pack" (sold ?) for about 1/3 the cost of
GP3, and it should include TCP/IP internet support for IP to IP internet
connections (maybe a Hasbro Racing server ? lol), much better sound,
better graphics (track surface, cars, etc.), etc, etc, etc.
Then again.... in this day and age, these things should have been
included in GP3. . . Hmmm, maybe GP3 should have been an
add-on pack for GP2. . .
Just my opinion of course.
Gotta love those weather effects tho ;)

It does model tyre wear, go into the car setup screen, advanced and inspect
car. It shows tyre and plank wear.

Hi Ian,
so does it model tyre wear according to drving style? Are lock-ups
having any effect on tyre wear? That smoke must be coming from
somewhere when you lock up, I hope it's not the driver's "exhaust" ;-)
cheers,

If you don't know about LAN, IP, and interface design, you surely
missed up on Indian programmers! ;-)

No need at least for GP4.
The patches will do fine. :)
The next best simulator will definitely NOT be Crammond's.

I don't see the need to give the GP3 team and Geoff Crammond any
sympathy for criticism - he's got my money and I bet that's all he
cares about!
