Since I'm in the wrong part of the world and GP3 won't be available locally
until Aug.21st (grrrr), I decided to pass the time by trying this GPL Rank
business. I fired up GPL to look at my lap records and was amazed, and maybe
slightly embarrassed, to discover that I had only turned laps at three
tracks - Watkins Glen (since it was in the demo), Mosport (since I'm a
Canuck), and a couple of laps at Monza (since it's mentioned on this NG
fairly often). All those other tracks and I've never tried them! I think I
may have tried the 'Ring but didn't even complete a full lap.
So, I decided to devote an evening to each track, just so I could 'get on
the board' at GPL Rank. After seeing all those other tracks for the first
time, what really struck me was how well GPL presents the atmosphere of that
era. Sure, part of it is the cars - I was used to the modern point 'n'
squirt F1 rockets in F1 2000 - but also the lack of safety features at the
tracks, spectators lounging right at the curbs, minimal advertising, etc.
And it was great to see the old configuration of some tracks, like
Silverstone. Man, I wish we didn't have soooo many chicanes these days at
the current F1 tracks. The old ones 'flowed' so well. I was kind of
disappointed when I got to Mexico and didn't see any machine-gun-toting
security types with angry dogs - I remember a race report in an old Road &
Track which had a photo showing this, ummm, *serious* approach to crowd
control.
So a big thanks to all the folks who've put together and maintain GPL Rank,
not only for the great concept but also for re-kindling my interest in GPL.
Hmmm, I'll bet the existence of GPL Rank has resulted in more laps of the
'Ring being driven world wide than would ever have been done otherwise!

P.S. - my apologies to fellow Canadians if I've lowered our standing in the
Nations Cup! <grin>

Hey Colin, your actually doing pretty well, you probably improved our standing.
Sounds like your ready to experience the best part of GPL, online racing.

Come see how you rank, at the GPLRank site

I could drag Canada down a bit in the standings if I chose to register
as a Canuck. I grew up there (moved to California when I hit 25). Now I
classify myself as a Yank but who knows, I'm feeling kinda lonely for
the old country.

No matter how much Canada got hurt, I know the USA had preferred I was from
somewhere else.
However since my GPLRank was +5xx.xx yesterday, and +4xx.xx today, by my
calculations my GPLRank should be negative in just a few days, and -1xx.xx
is just a week away.

pathetic 'laggy' dial up connection I suffer with. Given its lack of
performance in other situations, I think I'd be warping from corner to
corner. If I make mistakes, I want to know that *I* made them, not lost
control because of the line/modem/ISP/whatever. Secondly, I'm not very
consistent yet. Yeah, I could solve that by dedicating more time to GPL but
hey, there's too many other neat things to tinker with, even a few which are
<gasp> non-computer related! <grin> ...maybe if I ever get a DSL or cable
connection...

need about a 19200 bps connection for joining a race. I spent most of Friday
night (and Saturday morning) racing with my 33.6 modem through sympatico.
Latencies were 200-400 for most servers and good quality. Check out the vroc
website on how to tweak the modem DUN. There is also a disco patch for GPL which
may help.
On-line racing is amazing. In two different races I actually had people slow
down to let me catch up after a spin so we could race again. Great stuff!
The consistency thing is a good idea (you don't need to be fast but you do need
to be in control)

I've had that in most of the VROC races I've been in, your right it is
indeed "Great Stuff".
Racing each other is what its all about !.
