I have a Voodoo 5 agp card. I downloaded the updated drivers and I thought I
had installed them correctly.
But I checked in device manager as suggested, and I see that it lists VOODOO
SERIES, not VOODOO5. I right clicked and removed it, rebooted, went into SVA
mode, thought I installed the new drivers. But it keeps on saying VOODOO
SERIES in device manager.
Does anyone have any instructions or suggestions about how I could get this
done properly?
Thanks, James
Ya, first use winzip to unzip the 3dfx driver files into a directory, look
in that directory, there should be a driver9x subdirectory, then go to
devicemanager and update driver and point it to that subdirectory. On
rebooting you should now see voodoo5 in driver info. This has given many
people instant framerate increases, others no change.
I'm experimenting with changing the opengl driver that gpl uses, replacing
it with the quake minigls, it works but I haven't seen any framerate
changes, I might be doing something wrong.
Also I got a 9:06 on the ring today so I'm psyched :)

The new drivers *should* say Voodoo series. The only difference between
"Voodoo 5" and "Voodoo Series" is the name, there is no speed difference.
There never was either, i've tested both drivers that come with the V5 on
the CD and they both give the same results. I've had all this confirmed by
3dfx too.
And the V5 is slower (in 'fastest-performance' mode) or the same speed (in
'single-chip' mode) as a V3 3000 in GPL. The 2-chip solution will only give
higher frame-rates in fill-rate limited games, like Quake 3 in 32-bit.

Soooooo.....we witness the hardware induced death of GPL. It is a sad day.

Apparently you haven't seen GPL running on a V5 with 4X FSAA, it's more like
a rebirth for GPL than a death.
Yeah, but for those of us who *didn't* buy a V5 just for FSAA, I was kind of
hoping to see some frame rate increase somewhere, but it didn't happen. In
'fastest-performance', GPL was slower than my old V3, and with 'single-chip'
it was the same speed.
Also GP3 is slower in all case on a V5 compared with a V3.

Even stranger, most of us see 36FPS most of the time :-)

Maybe you have a special release, mine stays at 36fps 99% of the
time....

round!) - I had low fps problem after upgrading G400 to V5 and had to set V5
to 2xFSAA to get beyond 30fps i.e. Fastest Performance setting is mince.

are playing. Buying a T&L card (GeForce, e.g.) can do wonders for
framerates on some (Quake, e.g.) FPS games, especially on low end
systems or at lower resolutions.
If you have a P3 600 or better with a V2, then upgrading your CPU
won't give you much of a frame rate increase in most cases - because
the fillrate of the V2 is the bottleneck.
But in most cases with simulations, you're exactly right. People with
V3's or SLI rigs are disappointed when they don't see a fps increase
from the V5 with their Celeron 450 CPU. DOH!
A good rule of thumb for those that enjoy simulation "games" is to
have a CPU at least as expensive as your video card. Buying a $275
video card to plug into a system powered by an $75 CPU is a mistake.
You're better off getting a $175 video card and a $175 CPU to avoid
bottlenecks - assuming you can't afford to buy both a $275 CPU and the
$275 video card.
If you must choose only one upgrade though, go with the CPU. When
fillrate is the bottleneck, the video card will always have all the
polygon
data it needs to process.
This way, you won't get stuttering when the CPU is real busy with AI,
joystick/wheel input and physics calculations. A smooth consistent
framerate is generally more important than a real high average
framerate.

I run at x2 FSAA at all times and when its not all times Im on x4
FSAA...there is no reason to run without FSAA. Also buying a Video
Card for a framerate increase is only wise if you own a stock piece of
shit like the Intel i740 or some such. If you have a basic V3, V2 or
TNT2, TNT 1, GF1 and you are looking for a framerate increase then
buying a video card is a dumb investment. Its far better to invest in
a faster processor and mobo if needed.
