Superbike racing at Brands Hatch and motorcycle sim controllers
Members praised the World Superbike round at Brands Hatch, discussing the crashes of Steve Hislop and Troy Corser and contrasting bike racing's overtaking with processional modern F1. The thread turned to bike sims GP500 and Superbike 2000 and how to control them, with suggestions such as a joystick for lean plus pedals, or limiting a wheel's range of motion.
Automated summary.
Those guys are tough cookies!

Yes - it was fantastic racing. Not only do they race on the absolute
limit - they really *look* as though they do.
With modern F1, you know that they are pushing it, but it doesn't really
look that dramatic - unless its raining:-)

Yes indeed!
What a weekend for Ducati.
Did you catch the Superbikes at Donnington earlier this year? great
racing too!
I used to be the biggest F1 and CART fan, but last year and especially
this year watching Superbike, GP250 and GP500 have made me fall asleep
most of the time during F1 and CART.
Lots of passing for the lead, and close racing, guys like Haga who slide
the bike into every corner, what more can a motor racing fan ask for...
F1 is a total bore by comparision (I still watch it by habit, but much
less exciting)
I just wish that SBK2000 and GP500 were easier to master as sims, even
GPL was easier :-)

I downloaded demo of GP500. How is it?
...Thanks, NK...
Do you ever watch the Gp500, really good racing this season, the three guys
at the top of the table are always shoulder to shoulder in the last few
laps, very close and exciting racing. I like Superbikes also but it`s a
shame Carl Foggarty is out after his accident earlier this season. Eurosport
covers both, which is nice,

I only saw the start of the first race, and then had to go since my
parents was visiting me this weekend. How did it go with that driver
who crashed badly ? Didn't look good :(

The crash itself didn't look too bad, I thought, quite a slowish bend, but
being run over by Yanagawa probably didn't help! I was very relieved he got
such comparatively minor injuries, but looks like the title's been won and
lost now, even more so if Imola gets cancelled.

Yanagawa was involved in the Corser crash in race 2 (anyone know
Corser's injuries?). The much more serious *looking* accident
discussed above involved Steve Hislop in race 1. It looked odds
on a broken neck at the time, but the BBC commentators assured
us there was no spinal injury, "just" a broken wrist and ankle.
Very lucky, if this information is correct (can anyone confirm?).

Looks like good news:
"He was initially reported to have a broken wrist and a suspected broken
ankle, but fears on both injuries were allayed and he is set to race at
Knockhill next weekend."
also, regarding Corser:
"The Aprilia rider, who is second in the world championship, was treated by
paramedics but was not seriously injured and quickly regained
consciousness.
However, he was unable to restart the race, which could seriously damage
his world championship aspirations."

Humerus fracture suffered at Phillip Island.
It amazes me that people think that F1 is the bees knees in motorsport when
in one superbike , supersport or GP race you will witness more overtaking
and close racing than has been seen in F1 over the past 10 years !! if
Bernie Ecclestone ever watched a bike race he would die from amazement at
the close racing. F1 is doomed as a close competitive sport as long as it is
dominated by aerodynamics and pit stops. If the FIA had any brains they
would produce the body shells for the teams to allow closer racing and the
poorer teams to close the gap on the "rich" teams
End of rant !! the bravest people in motorsport are the bike riders .

I'm still looking for a perfect controller for bike sims...
What seems to work ok for me is using a joystick to control the lean of
the bike and rider, and only the pedals of my wheel to control throttle
and brakes.
Using a steering wheel to control the lean feels very weird (especially
if you ride a motorcycle in real life as I do), but the pedals feel ok
for gas/throttle.

GP500 is great, I actually play it more often than SBK2000, the physics
of the motorcycle feel better than SBK2000 to me, but SBK2000 has great
graphics and track modeling.
Both of them are great motorcycle sims, the only tricky part of
motorcycle sims to me is finding a good control combination. Driving
with a wheel feels funny (especially if you ride a motorcycle in real
life) and a feels better, but is also not perfect. Hopefully someday
someone will come out with a motorcycle handlebar controller for sims, I
know I would buy one.

And not just the bravest! the most skilled too! just seeing some of those
guys back the bike's rear end into a corner sliding to make a pass under
brakes and not getting high-sided is amazing.
Not only that, but these brave guys do the same in the rain.
Let's hope someday F1 regains the amount of passing we are lucky to have
in Superbike and GP500 this year.
