Impressions of Microprose's GP500 motorcycle sim

After someone tried the GP500 demo, members called it the most realistic bike sim available, a sort of GPL on two wheels, with Superbike 2000 ahead only on graphics. A side discussion confirmed bike sims are on-topic for the group. Later posts covered controllers, recommending gamepads like the Gravis Xterminator or higher wheel sensitivity, and learning tips.

Automated summary.

Definately worth getting. Stunning bike sim, only surpassed graphically by SBK2000, which is also well worth getting (if you're into bike racing, that is). Jan. =--- NanaKofi wrote... > -I just downloaded the demo of this. Pretty interesting. > Does anyone else have it? -Comments? > > .......NK
rec _autos_ simulators. A technicality, which is (rightly, IMO) overlooked by most posters as the operative word is "simulators". I think the general consensus is that anything to with the simulation of motorised sports is "on-topic" here. Jan. =--- Shane Lowry wrote... > hehe ... why is this off topic? off topic of GP3 ?
I use them exclusively (both GP500 and SBK2000), they feel very "natural" to me. Very easy to pick one's line with. The "tank" views (i.e. the ones that lean with the bike instead of the rider) cause me to miss my apexes. Well, the graphics seem superb!!!!!!! I love watching the replays too!

hehe ... why is this off topic? off topic of GP3 ? the game is the best implementation of a bike sim yet. IMHO. It just seems that bike sims arent as popular as their 4 wheel coutnerparts. shrug. The multiplayer was considerably better than Superbike 2000 although only up to about 6-7 riders. regards Shane NanaKofi <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > -I just downloaded the demo of this. It's an excellent game and I would definitely recommend it. It's very hard to begin with, but once you learn the tracks and get used to the bikes, it can be very rewarding. I suppose you could say it's GPL on bikes, although maybe that's an exaggeration, but it's the most realistic bike sim i've seen. Mapping separate pedals for front and back brakes was a big step, too (put FRONT brake as your brake pedal, and BACK brake to a button otherwise you'll go arse over tit every turn.)

"Colin Harris" wrote > is the autos short for "automobiles" or "autosport"? Good question :) It is short of "automobiles" since it's the tree branch of all the rec.autos.* newsgroup. The newsgroup rec.autos.makers.opel is clearly not an "autosport" newsgroup ;-D Technically the "autosport" newsgroup are designated as the whole branch of rec.autos.sports. It's just semantics. There is nothing off-topic with bike simulations. Heck if Papyrus released a Ski-Doo 8-shaped track Demolition Derby simulation using the GPL engine we would talk about it! > Jan Verschueren wrote > > A technicality, which is (rightly, IMO) overlooked by most posters asthe > > operative word is "simulators". Wonderful graphics, excellent physics, hard to manage without lots of practice - hard to judge trail braking the bike into the turns...but then again, this is true in real life. It also has the best looking replays I've seen (with the TV camera view). Default bike setups aren't any good, but what's new? Check out http://www.gp500.free-online.co.uk/ for 3rd-party season and skin updates, setups, etc. -- Philip D'Amato [email hidden] 2000 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R 2000 Audi S4 "NanaKofi" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > -I just downloaded the demo of this. I just took this out for the first time in months and I'm astounded.... gets better everytime. It's like a bike version of GPL. Difficult to perfect and drive quickly, yet practice is very rewarding and the learning curve isn't as high as GPL making it a little more fun to a newbie. I was having a brilliant mid-field battle in Mugello. Damn, the AI rock. I never noticed but they are some of the best around. Just when you think you've beater one he dives down the inside and blocks your line and all that.... superb... How in the hell doesn't this get more attention? Well maybe because of the controller issue. I can't ride when using a joystick. I use my Microsoft Sidewinder pad sometimes as it has so many buttons for different options but it doesn't give the accuracy of a wheel. My LWFF works very well once you set the controls up to take full advantage of all buttons. I'm sure a Profile for the game would allow you use double the options off the wheel. I just can't get to grips with the on-board cameras though, Ibet you can go faster as with any sim while using them but they are so difficult and frustrating to learn. Theres is a very good reason this was ranked so highly in the all time top games recently.

There was a guy who made a dedicated controller for motorbikes, but he made a limited run so they are no longer available. They took up lots of space too. I'll download a demo of a bike sim and see if I can get used to using my wheel with it. If not, then it's no GP500 for me. -- Nos

If you use a wheel, you have to crank up the sensitivity a bunch to get the quick response you need in GP500. It is an excellent sim, and the multi player even works somewhat. Kevin Caldwell Calgary, Canada

I use a Gravis XTerminator for my brief forays into GP500. I find it very good for the sim. I use the analog paddles for accelerator and brake and the analog stick for steering. There are enough other buttons (12) for the remaining controls as well. It is a much better controller for GP500 than either my Act Labs or LWFF wheels. Star with Arcade mode for a little while until you can stay on the bike consistently, then move on the simulation. That worked for me. Don't try to trailbrake or use the front and rear brakes separately either while learning, oh and keep away from the kerbs:-) Simple things but if you ignore them when learning you've no hope, once your consistent then try things and you'll be a flyer :-)
