WOW
That was some awesome footage
I didn't see the cars slide as much as GPL does
hmmmm
I was just flipping channels and came across this. The online schedule says
its a program about "Formula Super Ford". They just showed the start of
Zandy.... hopefully there's more to come.
Can you see me with a protractor and a ruler, measuring the screen for slip
angles? 8-P
I think I'll be getting a new system sometime soon!

I'm pretty sure that what we've been seeing in GPL isn't a lack of grip, but
a lack of cornering stiffness in the tires. In other words, we may get the
right amount of side force, but it just occurs at a higher slip angle than it
did in the real tires. David Kaemmer (in some interview posted online)
mentioned they may have "overdone that a bit".
I wouldn't call it a limitation in the physics engine at all. It's just a
matter of grip vs. slip angle definitions, basically. The model I've been
working on does the same thing. If I define the grip vs. slip angle to peak at
4 or 5 degrees, the car doesn't really "slide" any more than this angle, unless
you break it loose of course. OTH, setting it to peak at 10 degrees or so
let's the car get sideways much more, even though the car will go around a
given turn at about the same speed. I'm pretty sure this is what the GPL
"excessive sliding" is due to.
It'd be interesting to view a replay and actually measure the angle the car is
pointing relative to its path in a steady state corner. We could get an idea
this way of what's really going on.
Also, if we can get a radius on one of the corners in GPL, lateral
acceleration could be measured. It's too bad I can't drive with the keyboard
worth a darn! My steering wheel will hook into my P-60 (2-3 fps), but not my
400Mhz Laptop.
I'd love to see that program on Speedvision. Any idea when it's on?

A while back there were some posts suggesting grip in the game was
deliberately underplayed as a gameplay compromise. Whether this is true or
we're just confronted with a limitation of the physics engine I've to date
been unable to establish.
Either way it's something we'll have to deal with, although, if I were to
find out how to do it, I'd edit my self 5 to 10% more grip for off-line
play. Would be great if it were configurable in an ini file like the one
with RC2000.

Interesting insight. If you're interested in seeing people corner on the
limit, there should be plenty replays floating about on the net. As for
actual corner radii, that's a bit of a problem. I wouldn't know how to
deduct that.
I would suggest you upgrade your rig to enjoy GPL more in the way it was
meant to be enjoyed. Then again, your own project might suffer, so I won't.
;-)
BTW: I don't even get Speedvision, so I wouldn't know at what moment it will
be re-run, if ever. I based my observations on other, yet similar sources
(Glen footage).

With reference as to what people do because of GPL, I have come to the point
I will not even lift an eyebrow when witnessing what normal people would
call abberant behaviour. I have even ceased to be amazed at what I do
myself.
