Speaking of skidmarks, is there also a way to increase the
skidmark buffer?

in your GPL-folder there should be a file named "CORE.INI" (attention:
if you did not configure your explorer to show extensions of know type,
you might see "CORE.INI.sample" as "CORE.INI" - in that case, make a
copy of the "CORE.INI.sample" and name this "CORE.INI"), which you
should load into the notepad or whatever editor you prefer and add the
following 2 lines:
[ Replay ]
replayMemoryOverride = 20000
which sets the replay buffer to 20000 KBytes. adjust this to your needs:
about half the physical RAM you have should not cause you any trouble -
20-30 MB is enough for a int/pro long race, depending on number of
opponents, skid marks enabled etc.

Last night I hounded the AI on the first lap in a Novice race for the whole
first half of the track, til the first pink banked turn, and got a 9:01.
Afterwards I was disappointed to find that the replay only showed about one
lap from the race. How do I set aside more memory for replays?

It's very easy.
Add the following line in Core.ini file located into the GPL directory.
[ Replay ]
replayMemoryOverride = 30000
And have fun

I don't remember disappearing skidmarks with a big replay buffer, maybe
that's related, but I don't know for sure.
